I am curious....what was her reason for denying you the card when you asked for it back?

I think I have a lot of Tom Brown/Balls characteristics when it comes to these types of retail exchanges.
I once complained to my brother and sister in law that CUSTOMER SERVICE isn't what it's supposed to be. When asked to elaborate, I explained that I feel that at least 6 of every 10 transactions, where goods or services are exchanged for my money, are marked by some type of problem of difficulty. That difficulty ranges from giving me onions on my burger when I asked for no onions, not having something in stock that is on display - innocent enough problems, but problems nonetheless.
They disagreed with me, and to challenge my statement we kept a spreadsheet for all of our transaction for two weeks, categorizing them from good (merchant went above and beyond the call of duty to provide good customer service), neutral (got what I paid for with efficient service), bad (some tangible difficulty occurred with the transaction).
Unfortunately, all that was proven in my mind, was that they were far more tolerable and willing to overlook things I perceive as difficulties.

In previous encounters, to make things more annoying, she gives the "point one finger" upward when I reached for the card, as if to say, "wait."
Her logic was that the credit card hadn't gone through yet and that was the procedure. I calmly explained to her that it was NOT the procedure, and that she was the only cashier that did it that way. Then I explained the whole concept of giving me back the card after the swipe, and if she needed it again, I would offer it. It's not her decision to make.
Again, even in the same place, I get my card back with no problem. Except for this one cashier.

Shared this with the wife - she claims that you were already agitated by the fact that it was not your regular cashier, and you were perhaps looking for trouble out of sheer annoyance.
My explanation was...the cashier's procedure may very well have been more efficient than yours (maybe not), but the point is that you are the customer and you wanted to the card back. If the transaction failed, and you have to dig back through your wallet and retrieve the card again ... well, that's on you, but the bottom line is that she should have done what the customer asked.

I'll tell you what bothered me for a while. This started with Starbucks, I believe -
Cashier asking, "Do you need your receipt?"
This puzzled me at first, and in fact worried me. My immediate reaction was to wonder what malicious, nefarious activity could they be up to by not giving me a receipt ... perhaps overcharging me and pocketing the difference ... and then covering their tracks if it were to ever become an issue by claiming that they did ask me if I wanted my receipt.
Finally I realized this was simply an effort to be "green."

As to the receipt thing, yeah, most people just stuff it into a pocket till they get home and throw it away without even looking at it.
LOL @ Cho talking about merchants. Makes it sound like he is talking about a the peddlers at a faire in the village green back in medieval times.
I argue with cashiers all the time, Dana gets very annoyed at that.

Actually, I'm not too fond of the regular cashier as well, given that she once ripped me off out of a quarter, and I never forget.
That's why I started with the credit card there to begin with. It was definitely more the procedure than the cashier. I wouldn't care if a different cashier followed the same procedure, as every single cashier BUT that one does. I knew it was coming, and I had no tolerance for her refusal to give me back the card.
It's absolutely no big deal if the transaction fails to give them back the card. But I'm not going to stand there with my wallet open while this person hangs on to my card against my wishes.
I shouldn't have to ask twice.
Sometimes I have to ask for my receipt there too, which I do, to make sure they charge me the right amount.

I'm at a seminar with somebody that's talking about using Twitter & I'm bored. He has a fraction of the followers I do...hell, I have more connections in LinkedIn than he does on Twitter.

FYI - the cashier is actually SUPPOSED to hold on to the card until you sign the receipt & then compare it to the card... all the other cashiers are doing it wrong, unless this is one of those places that does not require signing for transactions under $10 or $20 ...
Just sayin'

You managed to figure out why you were wrong within 2 lines. No signature required. It's like a work chain. Swipe, give the card back, receipt prints, move on.

The World Golf Ranking does not have Vijay Singh among the top 50 for the first time in nearly 17 years. Singh is number 51 in the rankings after he failed to qualify for the final 36 holes in the PGA Tour's Texas Open.
The last time he was out of the top 50 was August 16th, 1992.

Kansas ranked # 1 on the GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test survey, moving up from 4th in the rankings last year.
The 6th annual survey tested more than 5000 licensed drivers in 50 states and Dc on their knowledge with 20 questions from state drivers tests and additional questions.
GMAC says the survey shows more Americans DO NOT KNOW THE BASIC RULES OF THE ROAD. Grades fell from last year. 85% missed what to do when approaching a yellow light (stop, if its safe to do)
The Worst drivers? NEW YORK. Closely follwed by NEW JERSEY.

I don't know if I would agree with that. Some might argue the best drivers are in NY because of all the difficulties navigating. Anyone can drive in Kansas where there are no cars.

Well, this poll was basically just based on knowing the rules of the road, as they are presented on drivers tests and the like. Not how they are handling the road.
Heres another useless factoid - at exactly 6 minutes and 7 seconds after 5 o'clock on August 9th, 2010, it will be 05:06:07 08/09/10. This wont happen again until the year 3010.

About 23 million people saw a movie this weekend, the lowest turnout in the theatres since CASPER led an anemic 1995 holiday weekend.

That doesn't surprise me. I didn't see any decent movies coming out Memorial Day Weekend. I don't remember that ever happening. The only big movie that seemed to come out last weekend was Sex and the City 2, which is not even close to a movie that is so big it should get a holiday weekend alone.
Worse, there isn't a decent movie opening THIS weekend either.

I read in that same story that there are at least 50 less big-theatre releases than usual this year, both from budget cutting and the fallout from the writers strike a couple of years ago. So the theatres are getting by with less. The only high hopes they have coming up are the newest Twilight and Toy Story entries.

I have somehow managed to avoid the previous Toy Stories. I hope to continue this streak forever.
ESPN’s women sports coverage down 8.5%
Michael Messner, a sociologist at the University of Southern California, has tracked how female athletes are treated on television for the last 20 years. In his latest project, Messner and colleague Cheryl Cooky of Purdue catalogued the content of the 11 p.m. edition of “SportsCenter,” as well as nightly sportscasts on three network affiliates in Los Angeles over two-week periods in November, March, and July 2009. According to their numbers “SportsCenter” spent just 1.4 percent of its airtime on women, and the network affiliates weren’t much better at 1.6 percent. Those are the lowest figures Messner has recorded in two decades, a span in which women’s sports participation has exploded. In 1971, the year before Title IX was enacted, just 294,000 U.S. high school girls played a varsity sport. As of 2009, the number is 3.1 million. Yet there has been a precipitous decline in news coverage since 2004, Messner finds. Five years ago, the network affiliates gave 6.3 percent of airtime to women, “SportsCenter” 2.1 percent. Now women aren’t even getting on the ticker at the bottom of the screen. Just 2.7 percent of ESPN’s crawl line went to women’s news or scores in ‘09, down from 8.5 percent in ‘04. — Washington Post

On average, LOST viewers saw just one in three episodes last season, and just 14% watched 10 or more episodes. These figures were crunched from Nielsen number research.

Not sure I believe that, given the interest in the show and quality of the work.
The show was consistent in the ratings too.

I'm starting to think that the Wicked Witch of the West wasn't all that bad.
Let's think about this for a second.
When we first meet her, she just lost her sister. Or rather, she just found out that her sister was killed in a freak accident. The cause of that accident was standing right in front of her.
Obviously, she cared about her sister, and how can someone who can feel positive about someone else be all bad?
Yes, she was pissed off throughout the movie, but everyone around her treated her like shit.
Wouldn't you be a bit mad if someone killed your sibling?
But let's add insult to injury. Her sister was in possession of a family heirloom that not only meant something to her, but was very valuable.
Who said she was evil? Glinda. But what do we really know about Glinda?
She said bad witches are ugly. How do we know that? Since when do looks determine niceness? How many hot women have you met that turn out to be total bitches?
Glinda was the one that ended up lying to Dorothy about what the slippers could do. First, she told Dorothy to hang on to them. It implied that she didn't know why the Wicked Witch wanted them. But clearly, she did know about the slippers because she knew about the whole clicking 3 times thing.
The witch didn't do anything until Dorothy refused to give her back the slippers.
Ok, so in review, the witch was angry at someone who accidentally killed her sister, and then stole her family legacy.
Plus, she couldn't take a bath.
I think it's safe to say there was some justification there.

Tomorrow is my 10th anniversary at my job. My debut in this office was June 26th, 2000. Showed up with a black eye that day, I was punched at a Yankee game that preceding week.
Wonder if I am going to make 11 here.....winds of change have been blowing.
If I picked a different trade Id be halfway to retirement! I suck.

Funny line in todays USA Today, in a story about how Miami is just the hot place to be right now.
Discussing the stereotype of Miami and Florida as a whole, a Professor of "Pop Culture" at Syracuse University said, "Miami is always competing with the stereotype as that place where your Grandparents go to drive slow with their left turn signal on."
