Had some of this in Maine a couple of weeks ago... quite tasty! I wanted to try this, but my father was not in the mood for a wheat beer, so we got a 6-pack of some Maine pale ale, but I forget which one. It was decent, but not very memorable. This also looks pretty tasty...

Nope. I moved out here to California before I became high school age. But I went to Geneva Gallow AND Karopczyc at different times. I moved around a New York a bit during my childhood...spent some time in Queens, in Shirley, even 1/2 a school year in Poughkeepsie. Parent, aunts and uncles on both sides all graduated from Island Trees. Lived on Prentice Rd and Teamster Ln (both right around the corner from the good ole Pioneer) I went to Gallow and Karopzyc, too! I grew up on Fiddler Lane, we were neighbors! AND my parents, aunts, uncles on both sides graduated from IT!

I don't even really like beer that much and I LOVE the Blue Point Brewery. Al and I go there every now and then. They have a "happy hour" on Saturdays from 3 or 4 until 7. They let you sample all their beers, and they don't stop you. You can "sample" as many as you want, as long as you tip. Yummy.... We went to the Brooklyn Brewery once, I didn't like it as much. Not that my opinion matters. ;D

I actually built a RIMS system..I haven't used it for about 4 yrs because I don't have the space ..Is there a reason you chose that over HERMS? I'd like to hear about your rig someday. do you do malt brewing or Full Mash.. I'd say pretty much all malt brewing with specialty extracts. I mean, I roast malts and other grains to give my beer certain taste elements of mashing, but for pretty much the same reason I haven't tried lagering or even building a RIMS/HERMS system, I haven't attempted mashing or even partial mashing: the time investment. I find that with good water, tasty malt extracts, some specialty grains, excellent yeast, and a good recipe, I make some really delicious ales without much of an effort. I guess I'm not that interested in going further, but I do appreciate it. There was a guy I used to work with that actually got me started in homebrewing that had his entire basement set up with an extractor and a kegging setup. He was making some delicious lagers, but the amount of time he was putting in wasn't appealing to me. Tom you are right, I'm not a big fan of Saranac. If you want a really good IPA from upstate New York, I'll get you a sample of Cooperstown Brewery's Back Yark Pale Ale. They use wild hops that they harvest from their back yard, hence the name. Delicious. In fact, I suggest a tour of that brewery as well as a tour of Brewery Ommegang (about 2 miles away) on a trip to Cooperstown. Ommegang prides itself in being a Belgian Brewery with a decent Hennepin and a nice brew called Rare Vos. They are also making a wheat beer (I'm a big fan of wheat beers - I can't get enough when I visit Wesibaden) that is fairly good. Their brews are good, but since they don't make a lambic, I really don't consider them to be a Belgian Brewery. It would be more accurate to call them a Belgian Style brewery. Everything they make is bottle conditioned, so you get a different taste from each bottle. Both breweries are located in Milford, New York about 10 miles outside of Cooperstown on Route 7. BTW, I try not to drink Heineken outside of Amsterdam. That distinctive flavor it has is the taste of spoiled beer. Also, I never drink light beer. What can I say, I'm a snob. My favorite "guilty pleasure" beer is Olympia and/or Coors Banquet Beer. Either of those beers served at about 38 degrees F on a scorching hot day in the Mojave Desert or at the Colorado River near Needles, CA are the physical definition of nirvana.

Both Cooperstown-area breweries are indeed outstanding, especially Ommegang. All of Ommegang's beers are delicious, but my personal favorite, if you can find it (getting more distribution, thankfully), is Three Philosophers.

Yeah, both streets I lived on Teamster Lane and Prentice Rd where right where Fiddler Lane ended. Did you live down toward the end or up closer to Hicksville Road?

Small World I grew up closer to Hicksville Road, by Elder. It is actually the start of Bethpage, my zip was 11714, but I went to IT. How old are you? I wonder if we were in the same class.

You know what the best Fred Sanford concoction was? Holey-Moley. That was swiss cheese, mixed with guacamole. Get it? HOLE-y Moley!
Oh, that Fred!

The holey moley was good until Julio's goat, Chico, stuck his snoot into it.

Yeah hennepin is my favorite of the 3 ...you can get them at pretty much every beer distibuter now.. Jackass ....I went with the RIMS basically because I went with the 3 tier RIMS and had a very good PID controler and heat exchanger, so pretty much no chance of burning the Wort....the HERMSs system Uses 1 kettle as the Heat exchanger and my SS soldering/welding skills aren't up to par to be able to pull this off.. the RIMS works like a charm and the only real difference is the way you heat up the Mash water....

I'm 37, too! I knew you had to be around my age to go to both schools, you went to Karopzyk first, right? I had Ms. Bergman for kindergarten, and Mrs. Lazerus for first grade, I think Ms. Connaughton for third, and Ms. Compare for 4th... And then in Gallow, I just remember Mrs. Tierney in the attendance office... Oh and Mrs. Forgione the librarian who used to roll up snotty tissue in her sleeve.

I drank BEER outside school before going to Ms (Mrs.) Rivello's (sp?) class at Gallow (I believe). Can't remember much in the way of teacher's names. I think another of my teacher's at one of those schools (who I drank BEER with) was Mrs. Deal...perhaps.
Foggy memory.
