I love the trade, but have zero interest in Dye. Just let gardner run with LF in 2010, or Gardner in CF, Granderson in LF. Gardner hit 270 last year, which isn't easy to do when you play once or twice a week for the most part. In 375 at bats as a Yankee, he's got 39 steals. What's wrong with a 9 hitter who can hit 270-280, steal 50 bases, and set the table for the top of the order. If he flops, explore trades at the deadline, or make a run at Carl Crawford or some other star this time next year

The real question is whether Gardner can keep up that .270/.280 clip over 500 at bats. He only had 248 at bats last year. Not many backups can do that. But maybe Gardner isn't a backup. His numbers, taken over a full season, would be outstanding for a number 9 hitter, even with no power.
I think no matter how Gardner does, they will make a run at Crawford if he's available.

I'm a big fan of the DeRosa idea. I think the guy would be a great fit.

if gardner can just learn to hit the ball on the ground most of the time, he'll hit 280 easy. Drives me nuts when he pops the ball up. Imagine Granderson on 2nd, Gardner on 1st, Jeter, Johnson, Tex, Arod....

My only downside with DeRosa is the defense issue. The guy has played something like 59 games in leftfield.

How much worse could he be than Damon?

watching the Cashman interview last night, i wondered, could he be talking about Nick Johnson? He said it was someone that had been talked about already, but hadn't "dotted the i's and crossed the t's". Today, we get word Johnson finalized his contract. That doesn't mean he was talking about Nick, but could mean there won't be another signing right away

Damon was once a better OFer than he is now, and played OF his whole life. His judging of balls isn't bad, and his biggest problem is his arm. To say a guy who has 59 games under his belt at leftfield can equal Damon is kind of ridiculous, even if Damon is a below average defender at this stage. I'm not a fan of weakening defense, especially when we got rid of one of if not THE best defensive OFer on the team in Melky.

I'm not saying he can equal Damon, but Damon's judgment has been pretty awful the past couple of years, and we all know about his arm (or lack thereof). It's not like we're trying to replace mid-1990s Barry Bonds in LF.

No, but in an OF that already has one bad egg, you don't want 2.
