Kerry got involved because originally he thought that Sox fans in Brookline were not going to be able to see the Sox, thats how disconnected these guys are. Now of course he is too embarassed to say that and soldiered on. I agree it sucks, but if congress investigates this, they would have to investigate the almighty NFL and its Sunday ticket, and ticking off the NFL Gods won't bode well for those comped Fed Ex field suites they all sit in with their campaign donors on Sundays in DC
They will let this slowly fade away

From todays USA TODAY...
...Selig told the Chicago Tribune that the controversy over MLBs proposed deal with DirecTV is "ridiculous." The seven year $700 millon deal would make the Extra Innings package, sold in previous seasons through digital cable and satellite TV, available exclusively on DirecTV and MLB.COM. It is a "slight controversy, in some places" Selig said. "We've been told for years we have too much product out there."

Selig is an idiot, but I wish Congress would spend more time figuring out ways for American companies to be penalized for sending jobs to India or Brazil, then worrying about a Dodger fan living in Texas having to buy DirecTV

Major League Baseball and DirecTV reached agreement on Thursday to extend their contract for fans to subscribe to out-of-market Major League games for seven years and partner on a Baseball Channel to be offered as part of the carrier's basic package, that channel to be launched beginning in 2009.
The deal has a window until the opening of the regular season for other providers like In Demand and DISH Network to match DirecTV's offer "at consistent rates and carriage requirements" to also continue offering MLB's Extra Innings package for the next seven years. In Demand and DISH have been a provider of the package in the past.
That means the other providers must match the non-exclusive rate DirecTV is paying MLB for the package, plus offer the new MLB Channel as part of their basic packages, said Bob DuPuy, MLB's president and chief operating officer, during a conference call on Thursday announcing the deal.mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070308&content_id=1834449&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

My guess is that cable companies will agree to pay for the package, but not to carry MLB's new channel, thus no deal. I feel for those who have grown accustomed to late summer nights with Vin Scully and cold beers.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Cable television said it offered to match DirecTV's deal for the "Extra Innings" package of out-of-market games, but Major League Baseball said the proposal fell short. When baseball announced its $700 million, seven-year deal with DirecTV on March 8, it gave the other incumbent carriers until the end of the month to match the deal. sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-tvpackage&prov=ap&type=lgns

I don't see this deal happening. MLB wants cable to launch The Baseball Channel (coming in 2009) on basic, which would probably lead to cable operators passing on $2 per month to subscribers. Any subscriber who ISN'T a baseball fan will scream bloody murder.

Browsing around there seems to be a lot of confidence that a deal will get done. Apparently MLB is dreading the idea of a court battle, and that is where this is heading at this point.

MLB will have to cave considerably. There is NO WAY cable operators are putting The Baseball Channel on basic cable.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Major League Baseball is well within its rights to sign an exclusive deal with DirecTV to carry the Extra Innings package for the next seven years, the sport's No. 2 official told a Senate committee Tuesday during a hearing on Capitol Hill. "There's nothing sinister, illegal, wrongful or frankly unusual about that form of business negotiation or results," MLB president and chief operating officer Bob DuPuy told the Senate Commerce Committee, which called a hearing to investigate the deal. "This is not a matter of fans being unable to view MLB's out-of-market games. It's a matter of not being able to watch those games on a particular system." LOL @ the part where only TWO of the Senators on the committee were in attendance at the start of the meeting at 10AM, and another 2 came waltzing in "25 minutes later." mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070327&content_id=1861562&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

Being a senator is a tough job. That's why Ted Kennedy drinks so much.

Unfortunately, MLB is right. There's nothing sinister. They're just being dicks. They have that right.
But Congress can "compel" them to do things their way. At any time, Congress can remove the exemption to anti-trust laws for MLB. They never have, but it's within their power. No other sport has that exemption and baseball only has it because of how the law was interpreted in 1922.

I bought a high def LCD TV over the weekend and plugged my laptop into it.
Now, I watch the MLB package on line, on my TV.
The package is great, but the quality could be better. I also noticed that the games online lag about a minute behind the TV action.

They've been in serious talks the past couple of days. I have a feeling MLB is going to ease its demands about carriage of the Baseball Network.

And looks like I'll be ordering it for the first time (once Cablevision gets its head out of its ass), as my new roommate is a Red Sux fan (should be an interesting season).

One cool thing I see with MLB Extra Innings this year is that for most weekday games (not always the case on weekends) we get the option of the home or away broadcasts. Therefore, I won't be subject to Hawk Harrelson's annoying voice this year.
The thing that continues to piss me off is this - If I'm doling out 168 bucks a year to see baseball games, and IF, for example, the Yankees game is one of that day's selections, I damn well ought to get the replay of the game - some of the teams replay the day's game late at night: Yanks, Sox, to name two. The odd thing, however, is that MASN does Nats and O's replays and I always get those. I'm watching the O's - Rays tilt as we speak and it's 1:05 AM (EST) but I scroll down to NESN and YES and both replays are blacked out.

I hate the fact that they pull the plug seconds after the last pitch and don't leave the postgame show on. It prohibits me from looking at Hazel Mae on NESN after Red Sux games and drooling.
