Like it mattered? Nolan knows he would have lost the game anyway.
Shrewd move, I say.

Wouldn't it make more sense to do it in a game that needs an attendance boost?

Its not about boosting attendance, its about honoring someone that means a lot to the franchise. And there are worse people the Islanders could have behind their bench than Al Arbour, Tom Renney being one of them.
When the game draws closer, I will start taking bets, the Islanders will win that game.

Just have Jill Nicolini skate around naked for a few laps and I'll be there.
And are you nuts Tom? Renney has done a gret job with the real NY team, two seasons making the playofs after 7 or 9 or some ungodly number of years without making the playoffs? But I understand you're point, when you actually have a good team with good players coaching isn't that hard. But being the shithole team playing in a shithole stadium in a shithole like Long Island, you can do stupid shit like having a on day rental coach.
The Islanders should be disbanded and the coliseum made into a fucking mall or parking lot.

When the Rangers get bumped in round one despite signing 37 free agents, we'll see which team should be disbanded.

Right, just shut down an original six team who still manages sellouts despite sucking balls the same way a retard eats ice cream cake. Keep the team who has piss poor attendance, a shitty arena and the WORST jerseys in all of profssional sports. Everything about them is fucking awful.

Sadly, everything the Isles do is to boost the crowd. They have retired every # possible, honored anyone that scored a goal during the cup years, hung a banner for the GM, and have had a reunion night almost evey year
As big an isles fan as I am, this is a publicity stunt. This franchise is a laughingstock at times. Go to a non-Ranger game, the stuff they do during a game is downright embarassing.
Hell I was at a game 2 years ago, where they took an inhouse mic, during a stoppage, to interview Michael Strahan about his line of hams.

Ok, just to touch on this - Arbour will NOT be in control of the team. This is as symbolic as it gets, and is being met around the NHL with admiration. Isles are getting a lot of kudos for it. Nolan will not only be on the bench, but will be in charge of the lines. Arbour will be making in-between-period speeches, and patting guys on the back as they jump on and off the bench.
I think its a great thing, and I am admittedly more comfortable knowing Nolan is not just turning his back on the game, although Arbour, out of the game and 75 years old, could probably still handle the show.

LOL, why not for some more symbolism, bring Gordie Howe back and let him skate a few shifts.

..and if they win, they will have an Al Arbour tribute night where they change from a 739 to a 740 banner and invite all al's players back. (OK maybe not but I would not but it past them)
Ill give Arbour credit, as from what I read he insisted this be vs a team that they would sell a lot of tickets too anyway (hence its the Pens on a Saturday) and he insisted there be no pre game ceremony
I just don't like the idea of fooling around with an in season game for a team that will need every point it can get, but any press is good press for the Isles.

But, again, its symbolic. Nolan is still calling the shots. And you dont think the players may get an extra push knowing that Al Arbour, a legend in that building, is there on the bench with them, and that the crowd will be hot for the whole thing?
I dont see the problem here.

If the players need a extra push against the Penguins, then they have some issues there. Jw

True, this is not as bad as the Rangers letting a fossil like Messier skate around for a whole season, its just that, as an Isles fan, I'd ike to see them focus on 2007 instead of always going to the 1980-83 well.
I just think its a similar pattern, that whenever the Isles take a PR hit (the free agent period was disasterous) Wang and co announce some ceremony or tretirement to get the focus off where it should be, 2007.

Huh?
Islanders did fine, after the initial dust-up. They lost Smyth to no fault of their own, and ended up replacing the likes of Blake and Kozlov with Guerin, Comrie, and Fedetenko. People could not wait to get Yashin out of town, but now its apparently a tragedy he is.
Add backend guys like John Sim, and the return of Sean Bergenheim and possible ascension of Kyle Okposo. Chris Simon signed a one year deal today to return. And its no secret they are not done, with a bunch of defensemen in the running to replace the likes of Poti, including continuing rumors of Bryan McCabe. Let it all play out.
The "free agent period" was anything but disastrous.

You got Guerin for a year and will be lucky if that old man socres over 30 goals. You did nothing compared to other teams other then the mad spending rangers. The isles will be in the basement. And now you gotta bring back a coach for what? What the hell is the point? And I hate to agree with him, but Walkman is right, if you guys got problems playing hard vs the pens, please leave the league. The isles suck.

Tom, I have to diasgree, they had to sign either Blake or Smyth in terms of PR for the franchise. To lose them both in a matter of hours while the Rangers got drury was a huge blow.
Buying out Yashin was the best move they have made, I actually don't know any Isles fans who didn't applaud that move.

I respectfully disagree, and visit enough hockey blogs and Islander circles to know I am not in the minority. Even tough critics like TSN and The Hockey News ended up saying the Islanders came out smelling like a rose, after a horrid, wretched beginning to the free for all. Bottom line, the Islanders offered Smyth more money than anyone, and he left anyway....thats not on them. And you need to read up on Blake....a lot of people are happy to see him go. He was a prick of the highest order. Isles will be fine.

Sure they will be fine. But they won't be good.
I saw a leaked pic of the new jersey. I like it, but I heard a lost of people hate it.

Perhaps Hilary Duff has finally found “The Perfect Man” in New York Islanders hockey hottie Mike Comrie.
The comely couple wined and dined Wednesday night at Santa Monica’s Giorgio Baldi restaurant and according to TMZ.com, they have been romantically rendezvousing since last weekend.
An eyewitness at the restaurant confirmed that the couple appeared to be on a dinner date, adding that the pop princess was smiling sweetly all evening.
But 26-year-old Comrie isn’t the only hunk Hil’s has been spotted with in recent weeks. Just a few days ago, Duff was linked to musician Frankie Delgado, but refused to comment on whether they were more than just pals…

Former Islanders backup Mike Dunham retires, takes job coaching team's goalies Associated Press
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) -Mike Dunham ended his 10-year playing career Monday to become the goaltending coach of the New York Islanders.
"I'm very proud of my career and really enjoyed playing my final year on Long Island," the former netminder said in a release. "I'm very appreciative of (coach) Ted (Nolan) giving me this opportunity to be part of his coaching staff and work with all of the goaltenders in our system. I'm really looking forward to beginning my coaching career."
The 35-year-old Dunham appeared in 19 games with the Islanders last season, going 4-10-3 with a 3.74 goals-against average and .889 save percentage.
"Mike had an outstanding NHL career and was very well-regarded for his work ethic and his leadership," Nolan said. "I'm very happy to have all of his experience on our coaching staff."
Dunham also played for the Devils, Predators, Rangers and Thrashers, compiling a 141-178-44 career record, 2.74 goals-against average and .908 save percentage. He played for the U.S. at three Olympics.

Early line combinations formed at Camp
newyorkislanders.com
While Ted Nolan won't commit yet to announcing his line combinations to begin the 2007-08 season, there's already an indication of what we might see to start the year.
Team Gillies – one of three Islanders squads at Training Camp – which did not in participate in today's scrimmage has the No. 1 line of Mike Comrie centering Ruslan Fedotenko on the left and captain Bill Guerin on the right. Tomorrow will be there first time playing together in a competitive setting.
Team Trottier and Team Bossy went toe-to-toe this morning, and the top lines on their respective teams was no less interesting.
For Team Trottier, Josef Vasicek effectively was the pivot on a line with Jeff Tambellini on the left and Miroslav Satan on the right. Tambellini scored the first goal of the scrimmage off a pretty feed from Vasicek.
On the other side, Mike Sillinger was reunited with Trent Hunter on the right, with new Islander Jon Sim on the left. Also for Team Bossy, Richard Park centered Chris Simon, who took left wing and Sean Bergenheim.
The defense pairings saw Chris Campoli with Bruno Gervais, Brendan Witt and Marc-Andre Bergeron, Andy Sutton with Radek Martinek and Freddy Meyer with Aaron Johnson.

Sound the Wacky horn alert!
Hey Islander fans, here's your chance to go to your team's games for just TEN BUCKS (!) and be part of the best cheering section in professional sports.
Welcome to "LOUDVILLE."
How do you get to LOUDVILLE? Four easy steps:
1. Show up at the Coliseum loud and proud to be an Islanders fan. (Don't forget to show your true colors by wearing your NYI jersey, cap, whatever!)
2. LOUDVILLE tickets go on sale 60 minutes before game time, so line up at the Coliseum box office with your friends and/or make some new ones among the community of young Islanders fans on line.
3. Bring your Student ID! There is a limit of one $10 LOUDVILLE ticket per ID. Sorry folks, but there will be no exceptions.
4. Once you get to the LOUDVILLE section, do your part to help lead the crowd in giving the Islanders the best home-ice advantage in the NHL!
"We're pleased to offer one of the most student-friendly deals in pro sports," said Chris Dey, the team's Senior Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Operations. "Our goal is to sell out the Coliseum on a regular basis, which requires us to reach and provide opportunities for several different target segments. The LOUDVILLE program and the student discount program allow us to reach the students and make a positive impact on the game atmosphere. At the end of the day we want our fans and our home ice to be the difference makers on game day."
Tickets are based on availability. The only games the $10 seats are not available are when the Islanders host the New York Rangers, so that means students have a chance to make it to LOUDVILLE for ten bucks to hot games that will be sellouts such as Opening Night on Oct. 6, Kids Opening Day on Oct. 8, Firefighters Appreciation Night against Brent Sutter and the Devils on Oct. 20 and Al Arbour Night, #1,500 on Nov. 3.
Students: stay tuned to newyorkislanders.com and Islanders TV throughout the season for LOUDVILLE updates.
