I'm sure most, if not all of you are aware there is going to be a 90210 spinoff. I'm guessing it's starting in September, and will air on CW.
Well, the news broke over the weekend that Jennie Garth will be reprising her role as Kelly Taylor, who will be a guidance counselor at West Beverly High, as we follow a new group of Beverly Hills students. No word on whether more of the original cast will be there.

She will only be making "recurring appearances" and will not be a regular member of the cast. It seems this is a case of her simply not having anything else to do with her time.
I never watched the original, nothing could interest me less than a new version of the show. Dana watched the original but has ZERO interest in this version as well.

A recurring part is not a bad gig since the show isn't RETURNING. I'm pretty confident Tori Spelling is dying to be on the show--she's on the D list now.

I was a fan of the original. Over the past years I'd probably gone through the entire legacy of the show twice thanks to the SOAP network. Recently I re-added 90210 to my season pass list on Tivo, but now I'm only choosing to view particularly good episodes.
This show was a guilty pleasure of mine back when it was new, and I took a lot of shit for the loyalty I held from the show's inception through it's demise.

I will be glad to see one or some of the old characters reprised.
Let's home they do a MUCH better job with this than they did with Frenchie in Grease 2!

It's not that the character was butchered in Grease 2. She was there to just show the connection, along with some of the teachers and Eugene.
The series at least has a solid showrunner in Rob Thomas, who did Veronica Mars.

Isn't she like 75 years old now? I am so not on board for this. I lost interest in 90210 once I was out of high school despite the fact that all of the guys I hung out with in college still watched obsessively. I even had one guy friend who called me Brenda whenever he had a few too many. Weird.

I don't think fat necessarily makes you look old. But the running gag was she was in her 30s during that show.
More news on the 90210 spinoff front as it looks like Tori Spelling will indeed be reprising her role as Donna Martin. It's unclear how big the role will be.
Will Brian Austin Green be that far behind? I would be surprised to see it, given that he's currently starring in the Terminator series.

Under normal situations, I would agree. The show runner is the biggest feather in the cap of this spinoff. Plus, it will air on CW, and won't need the same level of ratings.

CW still cancels shows, and sometimes really quick. While they dont need the "same level of ratings" they need SOMEONE to watch the show, and they need to be making money on the show.
This has disaster written all over it, and the whole idea of it is being universally panned.

I scoff at the idea of it being universally panned. You made that up.
And the girl in question was Emily Valentine. What a bitch.

The drug chick was the one and only Emily Valentine, who also set the gangs parade float on fire that they had been working on in Brandon's driveway.
Are you guys mocking this great show?
Carteris was pushing 30 the day she was hired to play the nerdy high school SOPHOMORE newspaper editor.

I noticed the kid who played Michael in the last few seasons of "The Wire" now has a role on the new 90210.
Of course, he is playing the requisite "Kid from the mean streets supplanted in Beverly Hills" role.

The chick who played Emily Valentine was actually a seminal participant in the old L.A. punk scene roaming around with the likes of X, The Germs, The Blasters, Black Flag, etc.
Other interesting names who launched their celebrity out of the L.A. punk scene: Beverly De Angelo, Lawrence Fishburne, Paul Ruebens.

Emily Valentine went on to bang Dr. Carter on ER... in any case, the premier date is: 9-02-08(and personally, I can't wait... and I am not guilty at all )

I am going to watch this...however I am sure it's going to be quite a disappointment.
I'm pretty much expecting the evolution of 90210 to follow that of The Real World. Remember the first season of The Real World in New York with the rapper girl, the hick, the NBA refs' son, etc. That was really an interesting and believable show. I haven't watched that show regularly in well over a decade, but these days it's horrendously edited to fabricate over the top situations and it's basically a vehicle to exploit young women in their underwear and/or bikinis.
I'm pretty much expecting 90210 to be an over the top sexually charged plot-less piece of crap.

The first two episodes are in the books, and the show was ok. It's amazing how much the new Walsh dad looks like Kyle McBride of Melrose Place, and Ethan's granny sure looks a lot like Amanda Woodward's mom.
But anyway, the show was not shy about connecting to the original show. You had Andrea's daughter, who should be about 3-4 years too young for high school, in high school. Not sure when the plotline with Kelly's mom and David's dad was, but the product of that union is a main character on the show as well.
The original characters on the show are certainly being used as well as possible considering they are not the main storyline anymore.
So Kelly has a baby. It seemed to be implied that Brandon is the deadbeat dad, but who really knows? Could also be Dylan or Steve. Personally, my theory is that the dad is Nat, who still kicks ass.
The main family is ok. Don't like the mom (Rebecca from Full House), but the rest of the family is ok. The other characters need some time to define.
It's a start.

It's not Steve's kid. Steve was happily married to Janet, last we saw.
I liked it. I'm on board.
I too, enjoyed the connections to the original show. Not sure why Erin is going by Silver...when that is her last name. And I guess the dentist dude from Not Necessarily The News (David's Dad)cheated on Kelly's Mom AGAIN...I didn't even know they had gotten back together.
Didn't care for the new renovated Peach Pit located on Beverly. The story line with Nat was that he was a struggling businessman, not a rich business owner of a chic food establishment on Beverly.
Also....they could ease up on the adult plot lines. At least Beverly Hills 90210 had the good sense to make the scripts somewhat age appropriate for the characters.
All that said...I'm on board.

They need to give Kelly much more to do though. She needs to be more than a token nod to the original. She'll need plotlines. But it's only the pilot.
The door is really open for as many original characters to return as they want. Good that they are getting even the original Kelly's mom back.
Far better than say, Saved By The Bell: The New Class.
I don't remember in which season Erin Silver was born. But I also don't remember when Hanna Zuckerman was born either.
