So last night was the long awaited premiere of the new American Gladiators, and I must say that I was pleased. It didn't take long for the first laugh out loud moment when some contender hurt her knee and couldn't continue. The eliminator is new and improved, and it was classic watching some lady choke a lead because she couldn't get over that final obstacle. It was like watching Apollo Creed slump to the ground at the end of Rocky II. A total wabbit/turtle contest. The second hour was decent too, and the Gladiators were entertaining. Wolf is probably the funniest of the bunch, but TOA is kind of funny too. The funniest thing for me was Titan--who I actually recognized. There are two fan made "movie trailers" for some nonexistant movies. One was a Superman movie, and the other was a Batman/Superman movie. He was Superman in both. In fact, as Superman, he is one of my MySpace pals. www.myspace.com/supermanprime Overall, I'll watch when nothing else is on. Good writer's strike filler.

As I told Balls last night, Dana and I voted 2-0 not to watch. No regrets either.
Couple of addendums for Balls and those that are. Toa is a cousin of WWE and Hollywoods "The Rock."
The guy that plays "Justice" is Justice Smith, who was on WWE's Tough Enough. Add in the Hogan connection, and you can bet on a WWE tie-in at some point.
I did not catch the name, but I saw a blurb on Yahoo news yesterday that one of the male Gladiators posed for "gay porn."
Also, I know Gina Carano is on there as one of the female Glads. She is a Muay Tai beast, and if I did watch it would have been to watch her clean clock.

The original is classic. One thing I do miss is the theme song to the original. I am surprised they didn't use that.

my favorite game in the old one was when the gladiators used to shoot at the contestants with the air gun and tennis balls

That HAVE that game. It looks even harder now. You should have watched more than 15 minutes. The Eliminator looks much harder now too.
I remember they had American Gladiators at Action Park back at the height of the show's popularity. They had both Jousting, where you could take one of THEIR Gladiators, and of course, an Eliminator.
The Eliminator rocked. They had a reverse treadmill, a cargo net, a zip line, some other wall you had to climb, and then you finished by crawling under a net. Of course, the first time I tried it, I didn't realize you had to crawl UNDER the net. I thought it was something you had to climb over, so I made the leap of faith and took the whole thing down.
I still won though.

One immediate turn-off to me was that from the reviews and such it seemed they were pushing the contestants more. I was always under the impression the original version was a nameless sort of face against the Gladiators. I never watched the original, aside from bits and pieces. But thats what I thought. This version seems to be "karate instructor vs life coach" - i could give a crap about personalities, and people.
I read an account of someone who went to the tapings, they said it was a mess, and everyone left them pretty aggravated and down on the show. From all accounts, this one will not have a long shelf life.

supposedly, the "winner" of this year's show becomes a gladiator next season. thats probably why you see more of the contestants than the original

And I hope Hulk Hogan gets nominated for the Emmy for Best Actor in a Drama. There was some contender last night that kind of pissed off Leila Ali, and made some sort of fighting stance with her. She looked at him and said, "you don't want to do that."

This show is dogshit, it's a disgrace good episodes from the simpsons and family guy get tivoed. I want Hogan to get cancer or aids in the worse way, another reason this guy is a peice of shit, more fake shows he gets involved in. I can't say anything bad about Leila Ali cause of her dad, but I will say I wish she would stick with boxing and keep beating the shit out of evey female boxer in the world. Lave the stupid shows to stupid, poor, irrelevant celebs like Hulk Hogan. Gladiators suck unless it has Russell Crowe. Thank You..........Ridley Scott rules.

You're just jealous because they didn't ask Shawn Michaels. I was actually wondering how Leila Ali would do as a contender on the show.

Nitro ruled, though I thought Gemini was hilarious. I liked how he'd be happy one second and mad the next.
It might be cool to have some of the original Gladiators do some cameos.

Again, the show won't last that long.
Ratings for last night were in the 6.5 range, which is being described on the surface as "not good or bad." However, its a negative sign when considered part 1 of 2 nights in a row, it most likely will go down. And down from that number, with this heavy promotion, would be a disaster.
I am hearing the show was way too busy, with way too many jump cuts, annoying personas, and bells and whistles.
The media source I read on one of my sites does not give the show a full season.
Oh, and the "gay porn" Gladiator is the character MILITIA.

I knew it couldn't be Superman. These shows all have too many commercial breaks. It's very annoying. It's like a game show that asks one question, goes to commercial, comes back, and asks one question. But that's just a lousy trend in TV.
I am surprised that the show is on during primetime, but given the writer's strike, and the fact that this is a show that has a very cheap cost to produce, it doesn't NEED the same ratings as a drama or comedy to make money.

We all know I'm no fan of HBK (although I'll take him over Hogan any day), but I doubt Michaels would stoop so low.

And if they did he'd superkick them, and not accept a check to whore himself out. I just don't understand why not take HBK or someone else over Hogan? What I don't get, why would they want a guy people can hardly understand the way he starts in with the mumbled ramblings. Wouldn't you want someone who can talk, not a guy who sounds like he's a chair shot away from sounding like Dick Clark.

Hogan is a much bigger name than HBK, and is far more well known to the nonwrestling public.

True, but he's still awful. And again, not Michaels, they can't get a better host than the yellow and red marbled mouth retard.

Well, I think for this particular show, it's not a bad choice. The original show had Joe Theisman.
