So this news broke last night. Chris Russo and WFAN have parted ways. Long rumored, it looks like his next stop is satellite radio where he will die a slow and lonely death in regards to people actually hearing / caring.
I was not a regular listen by any means, but even I know the sum here was much less that of the parts. Russo and Mike were solid together, had some good exchanges, but by themselves they blow. I will listen today to hear Mike's spin. Its kinda shoddy that after nearly 20 years together there is no "goodbye show" but thats the radio business!

I hear the FAN from time to time when I'm in Connecticut. Not too sad to see him leave. At least we will not hear that stupid laugh or GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD Afternoon garbage.

So NEWSDAY talked to Mike, who said he will continue on at the FAN, would NOT have a cohost, but also would not "be alone in the studio for 5 hours a day."
So for all intent and purposes, it will be the Mike show, which is probably what that blowhard wanted all along.

Sirius XM hires Russo for new sports talk channel Sirius XM signs radio personality Chris Russo for sports channel available on both services August 19, 2008: 07:54 AM EST
NEW YORK (Associated Press) - Sirius XM Radio Inc. said Tuesday it hired sports talk personality Chris "Mad Dog" Russo, former star of the "Mike and the Mad Dog" show, for a five-year contract to headline a new sports talk channel available on both Sirius and XM satellite radio.
Russo, who helped popularize the sports talk format, made national news recently when he left his popular show.
Sirius channel 123 and XM channel 144 will relaunch as Mad Dog Radio, a reformatted channel that will include sports talk, interviews, news and broadcasts of sporting events.
Russo will host the channel's anchor program, "The Mad Dog Sports Show," which will begin airing on Sept. 15.
It will be the first original show available both on Sirius and XM.

So many people are thinking this wont work. MadDog certainly had a local appeal, but they dont think he will "play in Topeka" as it were. I find it amusing that he will be running concurrently to Mike, so they are somewhat in competition. But I dont see Russo making much a dent, no matter how much they build this around him.
Its like Stern. Hes making more money, but his profile is so low now, he is off the map.

But there's New Yorkers everywhere and I think that's the idea and now with the merger going through all the sports will be on in one place. Tom, Stern will now have a possible audience of 20 million about the same amount he had in his heyday, so to say his profile is low is a mistake and as a listener he's probably doing his best radio, certainly better then anything on free radio

Oh, I see your point in a number of ways, but the key words are POSSIBLE audience. Even today Stern will admit a lot less people are actually listening now, considering he was syndicated on the radio all along. Russo was not heard by as many, as Mike and Mad Dog had a limited syndication and exposure on YES, but its still a smaller window.
It will be hard for him to keep his same profile, I think. Or at least successfully. I think Howard is in a good place, money-wise especially, and with the freedom to do what he wants. And I have heard from many he is doing his best radio in eons.
We'll see. I just think Mike and Mad Dog are much less than they were together.

Odd that you would say that. Many people would find Balls a more annoying version of Russo.

Russo won't play out nation-wide. He's WAY too "New York" - the accent, the aggro-tone, the intolerance for any differing opinions....he's a dick....and he's just going to play into the boisterous and obnoxious New Yorker stereotype.

Statistic on satellite radio: 60% of satellite radio subscribers report subscribing to listen to Howard Stern exclusively. That is astounding to me.
Anyway....I've only been on satellite for a short time, but Howard's latest target seems to be Mad Dog Russo. He is running his mouth about Russo almost on a daily basis the way he used to about Imus, Grease Man, etc... when he was on terrestrial radio.
