Just a couple of weeks ago. I know the snippets have been out there, but I ignored them till just now, when I saw a clip for "The Day That Never Comes" on a site I frequent. Wowza. Hey, Metallica lost me after the Black Album. I got the last one out of curiousity, and the two songs I like on there I REALLY like. But the key words there are "the two songs I like." That does not maketh an album.
I will be getting this new one, i will hop back on board, as it comes with high marks from trusted sources who heard it, and this track is killer. Reminiscent of old Metallica, with the tempo changes, intro, flashing guitars, and apparently the return of "solos" which were tossed into never-neverland on St Anger.
Really strong track. This shows a heap of promise. While Metallica will never be my favorite band, they recorded tracks I still adore twenty plus years after the fact. I hope to still enjoy this new one 20 years from now.

METALLICA's 'Death Magnetic' Reviewed By ROLLING STONE Magazine - Sep. 2, 2008 Rolling Stone's Brian Hiatt has posted a review of METALLICA's new album, "Death Magnetic", at this location. He writes, "Half of 'Death Magnetic''s tracks are over seven minutes long, with song structures that are not so much "verse/chorus/verse" as 'long intro/heavy jam/verse/even heavier jam/chorus/bridge/wild solo/outro.' This feels like the right move for an era where Guitar Hero is the new rock radio. And it's not as if Top 40 stations were going to slip in METALLICA between CHRIS BROWN and the JONAS BROTHERS, anyway. These songs rarely feel too long: At their best, they combine the melodic smarts of METALLICA's mature work with the fully armed-and-operational battle power of their early days. 'The End of the Line' is a freight-train rocker with a ricocheting riff and lyrics about a doomed, drug-addicted star. It builds to a frantic guitar duel between Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield, a wah-wah-crazed solo and, finally, a bridge that feels like an entirely new song. And the spectacular 'All Nightmare Long' — a thematic sequel of sorts to 'Enter Sandman' — combines relentless 'Master of Puppets' guitars with a Black Album-worthy chorus."

I know it's far from their best work (and it's a cover, so it's not even really their work), but I LOVE So What.

Metallica has a two-CD set out, Garage Days Revisited, where they simply crank cover tunes. Hell, they even do "Whiskey in a Jar" and that version of "Turn the Page" I am sure you have heard ad nauseum.
My favorite offering there is the Mercyful Fate medley.

It's Official: METALLICA To Be Inducted Into ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME - Jan. 14, 2009 METALLICA is among the acts who will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during an April 4 ceremony at Cleveland's Public Hall. Also scheduled to be named to the Hall are RUN-D.M.C., JEFF BECK, LITTLE ANTHONY AND THE IMPERIALS and BOBBY WOMACK.
The Pulse of Radio recently asked METALLICA frontman James Hetfield if the band has given any thought to who should induct them at the ceremony if they make the cut. "It's tough," he said. "We haven't really, you know, hit the ultimate person who we'd like to have do it. It's like you want someone who actually you've inspired, and you want someone who's charismatic, who can tell their story, but also you kind of want someone that people actually know who they are. You know, I was thinking, 'Well, why don't we just get, like, the über-fan, you know, go up there and induct us, you know. How cool would that be?'So we're still going back and forth with all of that."
Last fall, Hetfield spoke to Rolling Stone magazine about the band's nomination for induction into the 2009 Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in its second year of eligibility. An excerpt from the chat follows below.
Rolling Stone: Most likely, METALLICA will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame next April. Who will be onstage with you?
Hetfield: "Everyone that played on a record should be there. You're considered for the Hall 25 years after your first recording, not after you formed."
Rolling Stone: That would omit Dave Mustaine [former METALLICA guitarist and current MEGADETH mainman].
Hetfield: "He wasn't on a record. Jason Newsted [former METALLICA bassist] should be up there — he was in the band for 14 years and played on quite a few records. And so should Robert [Trujillo; current METALLICA bassist]."
Rolling Stone: Will it be weird to be there with Jason?
Hetfield: "There's no reason for it to be weird. We don't want to be part of the soap opera of the Hall of Fame. Everybody wants a train wreck, like with BLONDIE onstage arguing over crap [in 2006]. That really cheapens the moment."
METALLICA themselves inducted BLACK SABBATH into the Hall in 2006 and performed a medley of classic SABBATH tunes at the ceremony (see video below).
Nominees are eligible on the 25th anniversary of their debut release under their official name. METALLICA's debut album, "Kill 'Em All", came out in 1983.

I'll be at the Saturday one. And considering how much I fucking hate the Pittsburgh Steelers, I'm half-tempted to blow off the Super Bowl and go Sunday, but I probably shouldn't spend the $ on two shows right now.

What time is the Super Bowl Sunday show? There is actually a concert running against the Super Bowl?

Yeah, which I thought was pretty stupid, too, especially since there was a good chance that an area team would be playing (thankfully, they're not). It's a Sunday night show.
