the people across the street from us have put up the most annoying christmas display
not only did they light the big tree in front of the house (one of those tall, "wavy" trees) but they did the small tree on the sidewalk. both sets of lights are set to flash
but they don't flash in unison, or to any pattern. they seem to flash as if it were a short circuit. to make it worse, they are on all night. so when i got up to turn the heat off in the middle of the night, our front room was illuminated and flashing.
to top it off, they are PLAYING MUSIC. i thought they only did that in shopping districts!

All holidays except for the 4th are malarky. And Christmas is as Hallmark as Valentine's Day. I tend to like the term Winter Carnival.

Background: Newport Beach is a very upscale, lily-white, ultra-conservative community composed of the most millionaires per capita than any other city in this nation (of course, if you discounted real estate, many of these folks would not be millionaires....but the point is, it's a wealthy, ultra-white community).
I attend A.A. meetings on the Newport Peninsula. Yesterday morning, waiting for a Starbucks coffee, I overheard to older white, obviously uber-conservative gentleman having a conversation about the Christmas music being pumped through the Starbucks speakers.
The conversation went something like:
"Now that we have Obama, we're going to have to celebrate Kwanzaa."
"Yeah, great. That's like that made up holiday on Seinfeld."
"Hey (calling out the the Starbucks counter-girl), we need some KWANZAA music in here!"
(counter-girl) - "HA HA. OK, what's Kwanzaa music?"
"I don't know...just beat on some drums or something."
"Or some RAP"

One of our neighbors, two houses down, has music playing. Quite loudly. I have no qualms, cant hear it inside, and it puts me in a good mood outside.

I think this is SO lame. KCAL Channel 9 (Local L.A. TV Station - home station of the Lakers) will continue the 40 year old Yule Log tradition. In conjunction with L.A.'s easy listening radio station KOST, Channel 9 will air the image of a burning yule log in a fireplace for the entirety of Christmas Day, while offering the KOST broadcast as the soundtrack. Only this time it's in Hi-Def!!! cbs2.com/video/?id=86137@kcbs.dayport.com

the yule log is available on Time Warner cable IN DEMAND (and in HD) for holiday viewing anytime
there is also an In Demand program that just shows snow falling onto trees (also in HD), accompanied by holiday music

Can't you buy the Yule Log on DVD?
Anybody remember the Beavis & Butthead Christmas episode when they were watching the Yule Log?

There are a couple of DVD options for the Yule Log, and most seem to be takeoffs, with different fireplaces (including one shot at a distance, and another that is so dark you cant even see the bricks)
Yule Log can always be found around the hoildays, as Vinny said he can see it On Demand, and I know local channels (including MSG) play it around Christmas day. Hey, is it true that at some point during the original Yule Log footage, you can see someone reach in with a poker and pat the log a bit to get it roiling up again?
LOL that the Yule Log is on a loop, and there are people out there that can tell you exactly when to expect a pop, or a flare to spark.
I have the Beavis and Butthead Christmas collection. I think they nixed the Yule Log portion of it, as these old Time Life offerings cut the videos and footage, and just have episodic stuff. LOL @ Beavis and Butthead and the Yule Log.

At my boss' Christmas Party last night, a bunch of my coworkers NEVER HEARD OF THE YULE LOG?!?!??! What kind of caves do they have out here that these people's families never tuned in to channel 11 on Christmas, even for a few minutes?
On friday night I was watching some DVR'd Cablevision Yule Log, and Dave was very disturbed that the fire appeared to be a gas fire rather than real buring logs. Cablevision sucks.

How old were these people? The Yule Log has been off Channel 11 for many years. In fact, the "Godzilla Thanksgiving Day marathon" probably outlasted it.

So check this out, on the way to the Melville office there is a house on a corner with a white picket fencing on the front porch. Strapped to this fencing are two plastic toy soliders, standing at arms. Its the only Christmas decoration on the house. And it does not even look festive....as Dana pointed out, it looks like two soldiers strapped to a fence for execution.
I mean, these are those Olde Tyme thin plastic toy soldiers. Tied to a fence, with no other decor. It makes you want to, at the least, throw rocks at them, or at most, shoot them at 20 paces.
Its all very maudlin.

1989 was 20 years ago. I dont blame people for forgetting, really, - and dont forget that although it was "bought back" it was bought back in a 2-3 hour block, not all day like it used to be.

It was on for at least a 6 hour block all morning back in the day. When it came back, it was an hour or two, at most. A complete cutdown, not the same sorta pull.
