To all our African American buddies and members, we at Heckle House wish you all a very happy and healthy Black History Month.
I would like to encourage my democratic pals to vote for Barrack Obama this Wednesday, and my Republican bretheren to encourage their democratic compatriots to do the same.
It doesn't matter if you are black or white. I just hope your month is DYN-O-MITE!!!!

FUCK! You're right! I'm leaving this up as a sign of my shame. For whatever reason, I thought it was February 1.
But you know what? That's the problem with Black History Month. It's racist. Why do they get the shortest month of the year? Every other month is 30 days or more.
So despite my shameful mistake, I have no problem dedicating 30 days to my African American compatriots. They deserve the extra day this year.

in other BHM news....
most of you know that when there is no baseball, i work for a DJ company. one of our little gimmicks in February is to play only music by black artists for the entire party (unless a specific entrance song, or first dance song is requested). it's fun for the DJ's, and is hard, but not as hard as you might think. the best part is, unless you were in on the gag, you would probably NEVER notice! for instance....you have to play ONLY black artists....not white artists who try to be black (justin timberlake). a group with only one or two black people is acceptable (black eye peas is ok, Fergie alone is not).

So you're saying that as long as there is one black person, on the song, it's ok? Does this person have to sing, or can he be instrumental only? Like if the Osmonds had a black drummer, is that ok?

I think Roadie or Busdriver would be a no, but I want to know about the instrumental part. I am curious.

the band has to be predominantly black. a black drummer (like in the allman brothers) does NOT count

Wouldn't predominantly be defined as greater than 50%?
If so, then the Paul McCartney/Michael Jackson hit "Say Say Say" would not be allowed.

Hmm, this sounds like reverse racism to me. Can you imagine attending a party where the DJ was under strict orders to play nothing but white artists? Someone would burn the hall to the ground.

Racism is only racism if there is hate involved. I see no hate here. It's a tribute, especially in the month of February, or January 31 if you are really excited.

dude, stop trying to split hairs. its not a competition. there is no plastic trophy for getting it right, there are no little medals to wear around
its a fun game to keep my otherwise bored DJ's busy and creative

Nonsense. This is very interesting, and it's a great gimmick. I'm not saying, you would play "Say, Say, Say." I'm just coming up with a black & white duet.
I guess "We Are the World" would be an interesting situation. Plenty of black people there. The song was written by black people. The beneficiaries of the record were black people. But I can't say for certain that 50 percent of the singers were black people.

What about an 80s theme party?
You mentioned white people trying to be black don't count. Does that mean that black people who try to be white do count?

80s theme parties generally have 80s DANCE music. I guess you dont go to parties....what a shocker.
Yeah, I am going to hit a party and drink my ass off while We are the World plays really loud!

Funny Vinny - when the wife and I got married we had to specifically tell the DJ company that we wanted no rap and no (what my wife and I call...) "Black People Makin' Love" music - you know: Keith Sweat, R Kelly type stuff. Although my wife did make sure her all time favorite song "Poison" by Bel Biv Devoe was played....even though I suggested that a song with the lyric "Can't trust a big butt and a smile" might not be appropriate...I lost that fight.
Also, we requested that the DJ not use phrases like "put your hands together" and "lets give it up for" when introducing the bridal/groom parties.
As far as my music being played, I got nothin' ... no GBH, no Exploited, no Stiff Little Fingers, no Sham 69, nuthin!!!

I got the DJ to play "Remember Tomorrow" from Iron Maiden at mine, and Dana even signed off on it. He never did get to the "Cherry Poppin' Daddies" though.

Personally I would have loved for my DJ to have played "Woman" by the Anti Nowhere League, and if any of you know the song, you'll know why that's funny! ;D

For some reason, this thread made me think of this thought that probably belongs in the Random Useless thread but....
I contend that "I Remember You" by Skid Row is the all-time biggest chick song by a metal band.

Another question for Vinny. What happens if someone like Derek Jeter cut a record? One black parent, one white parent. Would you be allowed to play it?
