Balls keeps it close to the vest regarding his musical proclivities, but I have it from more than one source that his mp3 player is loaded with Billy Joel.

Yeah, we went through this on the music thread and Balls' noticeable absenteeism there. He freely admitted to not being that into music....probably explains why he views a show like "American Idol" with a much more serious and discerning eye than the rest of us who pretty much view it for the spectacle of the thing.
Anyway, Balls Top Pics in the entertainment thread are great. Funny enough - I watched two back to back episodes of Martin last night (a hugely underrated show). They were on the Love Boat with the original cast of the show (most of em) and the premise was that the crew had never been off the Love Boat so didn't know what was going on in the real world. Cole and Pam sat at the bar trying to bring Isaac up to speed on Good Times, explaining that Thelma married a football player and James DIED, followed up with a "damn, Damn, DAAAAAMMMN!"
Funny stuff.

There are quite a few Billy Joel tunes on my MP3 player, as there should be, as he is one of the most prolific artists of our day.
And back to the topic, Good Times is one of the greatest television shows of all time. I have every episode on DVD, and it really did social good in educating Americans on black people.
Florida losing James was such a tragedy. I felt her pain. At some point during this month, I will have to watch that historic 2 parter.
I really couldn't believe that she would remarry so quickly, but we never did find out what happened to Carl in that final season.

"it really did social good in educating Americans on black people."
As much as you say shit for effect most of the time, I actually agree with this in all seriousness....definitely not a Huckstable fantasy.

My wife and I requesed that there be no rap/R&B or ghetto crap at our wedding. Not our type of music. We have friends that like it and who were pissed that the DJ would not play it for them, but the kid got a fat tip from us to stick to what we wanted.
Back to the thread, Happt Black History Month.

It may have started a day early at Heckle House, but it is now Black History Month for the rest of the world. And God Bless Us All, Everyone!

That's funny MassYanks!
We asked our DJ about that hypothetical situation and he told us he has discreet ways of dealing with that. I think the standard line he ran with out our wedding (seeing how a lot of my wife's friends are former dance-club rats), upon each Eazy-E or Al B. Sure request he'd say something like, "I'll have to check...I'm not sure if I have that one...didn't bring much hip-hop with me."
We had been to a wedding prior to ours where they played that Kanye (sp?) West song "Gold digger" - we thought that was just about the most inappropriate song for a wedding that we could possibly think of.

Yeah, but Cho, the couple was probably in on the joke, and laughing about it. They may have picked the song.
I remember when I breached the topic of playing Iron Maiden at my wedding, the DJ was cool with all of it, but also took his job seriously enough to where he did not want to get anyone up in arms. He snuck it in at the end of dinner, just before getting everyone back out on the floor for a rollicking good time. And he played Remember Tomorrow, which is the closest you can get to a wedding-friendly ballad that Maiden has done.
If I had my druthers, I would have had him play Flight of Icarus. Oh, and I would have preferred the Dianno version of Remember Tomorrow to the live Dickinson version he spun.

Oh, I have no doubt the couple picked it, but from knowing the couple the way I do, I'm sure they weren't witty enough to come up with a joke like that. It was just the "ghetto fabulous" in them.

No offense to BV, but a DJ at a wedding is ho-hum. It's all about the live music.
If you can get a band dropping quick F bombs like in Old School, even better.
The last wedding I went to had Mariachis and a complete Ranchera Band. FUCKING AWESOME.
BTW, in terms of fun weddings to go to, nothing (and I mean nothing) beats a Mexican wedding. Those shits are a fucking BLAST.

My sister had a full on many-piece orchestra with this guy who was a very good, not in a campy way, Frank Sinatra impersonator. That was pretty cool.

I was once at a wedding that had a one-man-band. And I'm not joking. He did a good enough job, people were shakin' it.

when the wife and I got married we had to specifically tell the DJ company that we wanted no rap and no (what my wife and I call...) "Black People Makin' Love" music - you know: Keith Sweat, R Kelly type stuff. So I guess this CD wasn't in the collection.

Happy Black History Month indeed. I heard rumors that Alexander Pushkin was black. Is there any truth to this? I forgot that its black history month. I guess now is a good time to play all those Malcolm X cds that I picked up in Harlem last summer. I also got this excellent James Brown dvd that shows him in his glory. I really would like to read some black authors but they are either too serious like Cornel West, bell hooks, Angela Davis and Assata Shakur or they write stupid romantic tripe like Michael Baisden's novels. I think I'll pick up Assata Shakur's autobiography. I heard it was a good read.
And by the way, while I appreciate the animation characters, Cleavon Little and Sammy Davis jr. I'd appreciate it if you put up real Black people of character like James Earl Jones, (one of the greatest black thespians of our time), Frederick Douglass or at least Don Cornelius for bringing Soul Train to the masses.

Speaking of Frederick Douglass (and that's with 2 esses contrary to what the streetsigns in Harlem say) Something like this would go into the useless fact thread but since it is Black History Month, I am taking the liberty of posting here. When my mom and her sister were little girls, their grandmother had a picture of Frederick Douglass hanging in her bedroom. I don't know why it was there but hey the woman was probably so old that good ole Freddy was her homey in the 1st grade. Anyways, Mom and Aunt Chris were kids and I guess they weren't told the who's who of Black History (this is before MLK) so they thought that this was a picture of Grandpa. Nobody told them otherwise and it wasn't until they were older when they discovered the truth.

By the way, I commend you guys on your bottom pics. You kept with the Black History month theme, and yet you still managed to have pictures of a sheriff and a Jew. Job well done.

It was interesting. I had the Sheriff in mind for a long time. It was the only black sheriff I could think of, given how great that movie is. But I had trouble getting someone to represent me, until the Giants beat the Packers. I started remembering Super Bowl XXV. I watched that game with a fraternity brother of mine, who is black. When Norwood was lining up to kick, we both started praying to the late Sammy Davis Jr. for the miss. Sammy smiled on us that day, and remembering the story gave me my inspiration.

So, keeping with the tired theme, we have instituted the "African American of the Day" to run through the month - if nothing else, barring weekends when Fridays will just slip through till Monday, it will give you something new on top daily. Today I went with Jesse Owens. I dont know a Hell of a lot about Mr Owens outside of he was blazing fast, he pissed off Adolf Hitler, and he was of colored descent. This is why I am providing a Wiki link to Mr Owens. Feel free to discuss Mr Owens at any time oday. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesse_Owens

A good Friday choice. Tom and I will basically be alternating our choices, with Friday being essentially African American of the Weekend.
Jesse Owens is definitely a worthy choice. Disappointing that FDR didn't give him his due, but it was a different era. If an American athlete did what he did today, it would be much different. The wikipedia article shows that he had a lot of bad breaks, more a sign of the era than through race. For example, he wanted to capitalize on his success in the US, so he didn't attend some competition in Sweden. Because of that, he lost his amateur status. Without that, he couldn't compete and continue his career, which meant that he would fade away, and not be able to capitalize on his status.
That would never happen today.
