I love Ash Wednesday.
People walking around with a big smudge on their head, looking like they were peeping through a dirty window, crack me up.
Mazel tov!

I'm a dope. We actually observe, but are prone to forget. In fact, I have a turkey lunch to microwave that I just put in the freezer. No meat, yo! And once I got in the elevator with the main money man at one of my old job haunts, and he had the ash smudge. Thinking I was being helpful, I told him, "you got a smudge on your forehead. " I thought it was ink or something.
Oh, did I feel like a dope.

Yeah, I ate bacon during breakfast today.
Guess I pissed off a few religions there, huh.

I'm sure everyone makes mistakes like that. I think I once blew Passover absentmindedly just by forgetting. I felt like an ash-hole.

Actually, Ash Wednesday is supposed to be a day of fast, and not just abstinence.
And, depending on who you ask, you're not supposed to show off your ashes or oil on your forehead. It's not supposed to be seen by others, only God. One passage actually tells you to wash your face.
That was good enough for me. If the gospel says it's ok, then I go ahead and wash my face.
But that's not the Catholic way (and I'm Catholic). The Catholic way is, "Hey look...I'm Catholic! Look at me! My religion is best! I go to Church 3 times a year yayyyyyyyyy!"

Going to church 3 times a year still beats people not showing up in any houses of worship at all. Everyone has their own way to worship, or not.
The idea of "hiding it" is dandy, except most of us who choose to ash it up cant take a personal day just so nobody sees ash on our forehead.

I need to start going back to Church. My life was going good, then I just sorta stopped going.

I think I was totally misunderstood. What I meant was its not cool to crap on people for attending Church "only 3 times a year" while claiming to be religious. You do not need Church to be religious pretty much. It may bore many, but there is a lot of faith in my own household, even though you dont see us in a church often.

All too often, people equate a blind obedience to dogma with "faith."
I agree, Tom. Faith has nothing to do with jumping through hoops at church. Something may be said for the character and discipline required in attending church and obeying the protocols of church, but it still shouldn't be used as a barometer of one's faith.
I go to AA meetings twice a day and I would guess that I give and receive more faith and fellowship than a lot of people who go to church every Sunday.

What I meant was its not cool to crap on people for attending Church "only 3 times a year" while claiming to be religious. I always thought it was 4 times a year. Remember the following CAPE holidays: Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday and Easter.

My annual attendance at houses of worship is variable, dependant upon the number of people who drop dead, how many choose to reproduce and have their offspring dunked and if anyone decides to bind themself to another human in front of God...
