All stores are set to be closed, after a liquidation process which should take about "6 weeks." Obviously look forward to crazy sales at your local Tower outlet. Liquidation specialist Great American bought Tower for $134 million, simply to liquidate the stores. I shall miss the Tower down the block from my job, only cause I have been going there for years. It'll be easy enough to forget, however, with a snazzy Best Buy now enconsed on the block. Tower Records, we hardly knew ye!

I buy CDs, especially for bands I support. Where I used to buy 5-10 a month, I now buy 1 or 2. Yeah, I download a fair amount of stuff. But there is still something to be said about buying CDs that you really want to have.

I bought a couple of CDs on Half.com when I got my books for school, but that was honestly the first CD I have purchased in years. If I had extra money, though, I would buy CDs more often, since I do not acquire music in any other way. Back before I was paying rent, I used to love Tower, especially since they were open late. The thing is, I consider books, music and movies luxuries, and they are ranked in that order. I don't even consider shopping for those things unless I have money leftover after I cover the necessities: food, shelter, Yankee tickets, hockey tickets, gasoline, beer, utilities, shoes, more shoes and other clothing...

The Tower records closed in Toronto a few years ago. I liked that it was open late as well.
A few years on my birthday, me and few friends were on the way to a movie and we stopped in there, I filled some ballot for a Beatles contest. A few days later - I got a call that I had won. So Tower records was always good in my books.

My favorite "good thing Tower is open late!" yarn revolves around me stumbling around drunk one evening, passing Tower, deciding to head in, and buying a cassette that I already had, and forgot I did, till I woke up the next morning and saw the Tower bag.

no they weren't. they were pretty fair about things and also relied heavily on employee picks and word of mouth... I'll miss Tower, though I haven't really shopped there in years.

Well, whenever I went there, I found they were the highest price on everything. Compared to J&R and online, no wonder they went out of business.

Tower was nowhere near as bad as Sam Goody. It AMAZES me that Sam Goody, with their $19.97 CDs, is still in business.

I'm not sure what kind of odd music or home entertainment you were shopping for, but I always thougt they offered decent value at Tower. Plain and simple, they were wiped out by the internet and The Virgin Empire.

Standard stuff, overpriced. I don't know what websites you went to, but the shopping I did kicked the living shit out of Tower in everything. So did J&R.

stop blowing J&R's cock just b/c they are in kahootz with the Yankees and Ultimate Road Trip and offer gay coupons with the season ticket booket.

Those coupons were useless, and I've been going to J&R a lot longer than their relationship with the Yankees. I guess Tower was so important to you that you wanted to give them more money. Too bad they're out of business.

Is that nation-wide or just in NY? The ENTIRE company is going down?

I remember fondly, at age 13, forcing my parents to stop at a Tower Records as we were traveling through Manhattan on the way to my grandparents place in Brooklyn. It was the first time I'd ever been in Tower and I bought Depeche Mode's Music for the Masses. I thought I was cool as shit.

Yeah, it’s the MP3 era. It’s kinda sad to me. I’ve always enjoyed the past time of going to a record store, and actually looking at albums/CDs, reading the backs of the albums. Part of the appeal for me has always been reading the record/CD sleeves while listening. I just don’t feel like there’s any “ambience” left in being a music fan, not getting to go the record store. I don’t know…I just feel like there’s more appreciation to be had in actually putting in some effort to go out and seek new music. I can’t even count the amount of new music I’ve been turned on to because something caught my eye AT the record store. I don’t listen to music on the radio, so I can’t rely on them to hip me to new bands…plus radio pretty much spoon-feeds you Top-40 music that they’re being paid off to push on the FM radio crowd…so it’s really not a viable way to discover “GOOD” music as opposed to “POPULAR” music (which don’t seem to always coincide these days).
There still a RECORD store (and I mean RECORDS) in Huntington Beach that I love…that I could spend hours at a time leafing through the bins, reading backs of albums, etc.

Is that nation-wide or just in NY? The ENTIRE company is going down? Entire company. All 3000 or so employees nationwide looking for new jobs. I too used to enjoy record shopping. Still do, to an extent, although I spend a lot less than I used to. But I still found myself walking around in Tower during lunch - its right here - and poking about, seeing what was new, what I needed next to fill holes in my collection. I also used to get some cool death/thrash metal magazines there I dont find anywhere else.

Here's my public service announcement for the day. If you are looking to add some gifts to your holiday booty, you may want to look into our friends at Tower Records. Finally, there are real sale prices considering all must go. Almost all music is straight up 60% off. DVDS are half-price, and there are daily specials which at times takes another 20% off of that price. There are some sick discounts there and at least the Tower here on lower Broadway has heaps and heaps of stock.

Just got an online coupon from Tower mentioning, "the stores may have shut their doors, but you can still shop online..."
That blows. I wanted to make one more shopping trip next week when I was back in the city. If anyone knows for sure the stores are shut, let me know. Also, in regards to the wack sales prices, I have been told by people here in our Farmingdale office that the prices in the Long Island Towers did not approach the mad discounts that were going on in the city.

Almost done with this Tower Records thread, as apparently there are just "2 more days!"
Everything in there is 90% off now. That sounds fantastic, but you can imagine the gems that are still stuck in there. I did, however, find a few stocking stuffers, and treated myself to most of the wrestling DVDs that were left, at an average of .50 to .75 cents.
Some classic stuff which I will discuss in the wrestling thread. I also got a 5 disc Motocross box set (22 hours!) with all kinds of vintage Supercross events from the early 80s onward, for a final price of $2.00. Whoo hooey!
