I usually end up tossing this stuff into USELESS FACTS THREAD, but I find enough of it that I think is of interest that its time to start a thread in here. Feel free to use this resource.
SPINAL TAP Recording First New Material In Nearly 20 Years - Feb. 3, 2009 According to BBC News, SPINAL TAP — the spoof English heavy metal band which is the brainchild of American actors Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and Christopher Guest — is recording its first new material in nearly twenty years.
Shearer, who these days voices several "Simpsons" characters, told BBC 5 Live: "It'll be for download as well as on conventional media later this year."
The band briefly reformed two years ago for the Live Earth gig (see video below) at Wembley Stadium in London.
Shearer, who portrays TAP's bass player Derek Smalls, said: "We've never recorded the song we did at Live Earth, 'Warmer Than Hell', and I think they (SPINAL TAP) are trying to revisit their old success. Not that they were ever popular, maybe in their own universe. We'll do a song called 'Gimme Some More Money', probably with some dubious results."

Now, while I hardly ever buy Metal Maniacs anymore (although I do own a good heap of issues and pick up new ones if they seem to be running features on bands I really like) and I dont read Metal Edge at all, this is dire.
Metal Maniacs was a very solid publication, with very good interviews, and the reviews turned me on to all kinds of tunage.
METAL MANIACS And METAL EDGE Magazines Closing Their Doors? - Feb. 4, 2009 Several writers for Metal Maniacs magazine have reported receiving word yesterday that both Metal Maniacs and its sister publication Metal Edge have shut their doors effective immediately, with one more issue of each title still set to come out. It should be noted, however, that the two magazines' publisher, Zenbu Media, has not yet issued a press release officially corroborating this information.
Metal Edge and Metal Maniacs, two of the leading heavy metal magazines in the U.S., have been publishing for 24 years and 19 years, respectively. The two publications were acquired by Zenbu Media in February 2007.
Covering bands across the hard rock spectrum — from classic metal to thrash to punk — Metal Edge is considered a leading voice in the mainstream metal media. In existence since 1985, Metal Edge was published twelve times a year — providing in-depth coverage of current musical acts, including band profiles, news of the latest releases and coverage of the biggest tours.
Metal Maniacs has given exposure to the best underground metal bands. Scouring the globe for the greatest unheard-of artists, Metal Maniacs has, for nearly 20 years, provided one of the few outlets for these acts and a way for fans to unearth the greatest unheralded hard rock outfits.
Based in New York City, Zenbu Media is a music-oriented multi-pronged media company that specializes in print, digital, events and recordings.

Spinal Tap? No shit! I threw the DVD in a few weeks ago so my girlfriend could see it for the first time and she was in pain from laughing. "Oh ... Boston's not a big college town anyway."

Kiss still have groupies www.music-news.com/ShowNews.asp?H=Kiss-still-have-groupies&nItemID=24048 Aging rockers Kiss still have groupies.
Guitarist Paul Stanley, 57, claims the band get propositioned by female fans just as much as they did in their heyday, adding the only difference now is they don't "indulge" in sex as often.
Explaining how women chase after the group, Paul explained: "They are there in abundance. The only thing that changes is whether you choose to indulge. But the buffet is always there!"
The rocker added he, singer Gene Simmons - who claims to have slept with over 1,000 women - guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer are heading back to the studio to record their next album for release this autumn.
He confirmed to the New York Post newspaper: "It's a Kiss album in the most true and classic sense - we're recording it in analogue, not digital, and writing it ourselves."
Gene has previously claimed he has slept with so many woman as he thinks it's "rude" not to bed groupies.
He explained: "Think of me as a goodwill ambassador. The poor girls spend hours putting on their make-up and their perfume.
"How rude would it be if that got ignored? Otherwise, they'll feel their self-esteem lower. You don't want that happening. I'm a Good Samaritan. It's my good-natured side."

New Guitar Hero game misspells "Lynyrd Skynyrd"videogames.yahoo.com/feature/new-guitar-hero-game-misspells-quot-lynyrd-skynyrd-quot-/1289712Lynyrd Skynyrd might not be the world's most intellectual rock band, but at least they can spell their own name. Which is more than we can say for whoever designed the cover for the upcoming Guitar Hero: Metallica game.
Rolling Stone caught the grammatical gaffe while checking out the game's cover art, which proudly displays the names of all the hard-rocking artists that grace the game's soundtrack. While bands like Judas Priest and Samhain enjoyed correct spelling, just off to the left of the "Hero" is the hitherto unknown band "Lynyrd Skynrd," whom we presume is some sort of Lynyrd Skynyrd cover band, minus a Y.
Guitar Hero: Metallica is the second game in the series to be based on the music of one particular group, following last year's Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. No word yet on whether or not Guitar Hero publisher Activision plans on fixing the spelling error before the game launches on March 29, but we certainly hope they do. Haven't Skynyrd fans suffered enough?

VH1 CLASSIC Continues To Rock With New Season Of 'That Metal Show' - Feb. 24, 2009 VH1 Classic's hit series "That Metal Show" is back and badder then ever as it returns on Saturday, March 7 at 11:00 p.m. The outrageously funny weekly series returns to discuss and debate all the fist pumping, headbanging, hard rock and metal acts of the past 40 years.
"That Metal Show" premiered last season to rave reviews and featured special guests RUSH, AC/DC, TWISTED SISTER, Lita Ford, Ace Frehley of KISS and a very special appearance by former baseball star Mike Piazza. This season the gang is back as hosts Eddie Trunk, Jim Florentine ("Crank Yankers", "Inside the NFL", "Meet The Creeps"), and Don Jamieson ("Inside The NFL", "Dice Undisputed", "Meet The Creeps") lead this loud, proud, and headbanger approved talkfest.
VH1 Classic has mixed the best of "The View" with "Headbangers Ball" to create "That Metal Show". This season metal heads will join Eddie, Don, and Jim as they welcome former GUNS N' ROSES bassist and VELVET REVOLVER member Duff McKagan, Frank Bello from ANTHRAX, PANTERA founder Vinnie Paul and HEAVEN AND HELL, to name just a few.
Each week the hosts discuss the latest rock news, share stories, take to the streets for man on the street pranks, and argue about their favorite bands. Whether they're arguing over the best Canadian metal band of all time in "The Throwdown" or tracking down one of your favorite metal artists who disappeared in a "Whatever Happened To" segment or Jim Florentine and Don Jamieson hitting the streets to connect and hang out with the fans for some "Man-On-The Street" pranks, everything is covered and no metal band or metal moment is left behind.
But "That Metal Show" isn't just a roundtable discussion; it's about comedy too. The comedy continues in-studio, as host Eddie Trunk takes on the metal maniacs in the studio audience in the "Stump the Trunk" metal trivia contest. If the audience can stump Eddie, they win a metal-worthy prize.
"That Metal Show" is a hilarious 30 minutes of mayhem that all fans of hard rock and heavy metal are bound to love! It is the perfect combination of music and comedy in one show. Tune in to VH1 Classic on March 7 at 11:00 p.m to join the debate and rock on! Fans can also catch all of season one and season two online at VH1Classic.com. New episodes will launch online every Monday morning following the show's on-air premiere. Additionally, fans can also ask a "whatever happened to" question to the guys via the VH1 Blog . Select questions may end up on air.
"That Metal Show" is a production of VH1 Classic. Lee Rolontz and Keshia Williams as executive producers for VH1. Jeff Baumgardner serves as producer for the series for VH1.

Big news on the internet and message boards. According to blabbermouth, the mighty Faith No More will be reuniting for European dates. I'm so psyched! Hopefully, they can do some U.S. shows after. I would love it. Never had my chance to see them. If it comes anywhere close, I'm soooooo there. No Jim Martin though.

LOL @ Living Colour. When I was a student at New Paltz circa 89-90, they did a show in our gym for the students. Some electrical equipment fried and melted a section of the gym floor, costing the school thousands of dollars to replace. It was a school controversy at the time.

Keel is actually "back together" and working n NEW material!
Some of those bands may just exist for that night, a fun get-together to relive past glories. Others, like Dokken, are missing most of the known lineups. But Keel is getting ready to bring on the metal!

Funny thing is, anyone who looks at the "What Are You Listening To Right Now?" thread knows I love metal, but I hate most of these bands. I can't stand Extreme, Slaughter, Keel, Warrant and BulltBoys. And Kix and Y&T were marginal, at best. Where the hell is Grim Reaper when we need them?

Yeah, i just read an "LA Guns vs LA Guns" sorta tale. Dude, that sort of band warfare goes back to bands like The Temptations and the like still making the rounds in bogus configurations.
9, from what I remember from Keel, I think they had a slightly heavier edge than some of those other bands. Also, I will give minor props to Y&T, who had a Whitesnake vibe at times - the bluesy, soulful Whitesnake, not the poppy one.
Steve Grimmett, who manned the mic for Grim Reaper, is still kicking along, he has a solo outfit out there. Nick Bowcott, the guitarist, is a producer, and I read a few times that he is based in NYC.

Grandmaster Flash has just released whats being billed as his first new album in 20 years, called The Bridge. Folks like Q-Tip, Big Daddy Kane, Snoop, Busta Ryhmes and Pink are on it.
USA TODAY's music critic gave it 3 of 5 stars. He even has a ditty called "Tribute to the Breakdancer" on it.

METALLICA's LARS ULRICH: I Downloaded 'Death Magnetic' Illegally - Mar. 3, 2009 METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich, who angered many fans by waging a high-profile battle with Napster in 2000 over illegal music downloading, admitted in a recent interview that he has also used the Internet to obtain a full album's worth of music without paying for it. "I sat there myself and downloaded [METALLICA's latest CD] 'Death Magnetic' [illegally] from the Internet just to try it," he told Eddie Trunk of VH1 Classic's series "That Metal Show". "I was like, 'Wow, this is how it works.' I figured if there is anybody that has a right to download 'Death Magnetic' for free, it's me. I sat there one night at my house with about six of my friends and a bottle of wine. And what was it called?! [Trying to think of the name of the file-sharing client he used to download the album] We found it — this was like two or three days after ['Death Magnetic'] leaked. I was like, 'You know what? I've gotta try this.' So we sat there, and thirty minutes later, I had 'Death Magnetic' in my computer. It was kind of bizarre."
In a 2003 interview with Launch, Lars about the band's battle with Napster, "Most of the time, it's like a bad dream, like what the fuck was that? [Several] years later, it's like did that really happen? We went from being somewhat well-respected, well-liked, and then I woke up one day and all of a sudden I was the most hated man in rock 'n' roll. It was like, huh? Me? What did I do wrong? I'm one of the good guys. That was all kind of weird. If you look at our history, we've always been pretty protective of our own shit. When anybody got too close or fucked with our shit, we always took action. In retrospect, I'm proud of what we did, I really felt sideswiped on that one. In my own little ignorant world, I didn't see it coming. I was completely ignorant and unaware of the magnitude of this issue for people. I was just sitting there in my own little selfish world going, 'I'm going to protect METALLICA. Don't fuck with METALLICA.' Then (explosion sound), 'You're pro-record company, you're greedy!' I'm not pro-record company. We invented being anti-record company. We told our record company to go fuck themselves before anyone else. Stop. It was a very surreal thing, because it was so hard to connect what I read about myself and METALLICA, it was so abstract to what was on my radar about my own reality. People going, 'You're a really greedy little man.' It was like, what are you talking about? We've been giving shit away for years. We want to be the ones giving it away, not someone else. I'm proud of the stance we took. It was a very tough time. It was a much tougher time, because in the middle of that you have to put your best game face on. It was difficult. A lot of that shit hurt and it was very bewildering because it was difficult to connect it to your own reality. For better or worse, it got a good debate started. In retrospect, I'm not claiming any sort of victory — who gives a shit about that? — I think more people are starting to realize, not that we were right, but this is an issue that is changing the face of everything that is going on. Not only the music world, but the film world is next. What better way to deal with it than at least educate people about it. If nothing else, I look back at the six months in 2000 as the first step in the education."

They're playing a few blocks from my apartment, actually, at Warsaw. April 17. That date doesn't really work for me, which is why I haven't bought tickets, but I doubt it'll sell out so I may show up the night of the show if I can. Apparently, after breaking up nearly 15 years ago, they got back together last year.

Oh, Lord ...
OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE dated 3/10/09
DEVO ANNOUNCE NEW STUDIO ALBUM TO DEBUT FALL 2009!
De-evolution has finally arrived...and who better to guide us through the mess than DEVO.
What the iconic new wave, art punk pioneers cautioned us about almost 30 years ago is no longer a humorous theory.
The fall of 2009 will bring a new DEVO studio album, their first one since 1990's Smooth Noodle Maps. It'll mark their first new music since the strong fan reaction that greeted the 2007 single "Watch Us Work It," their first new song in 18 years and one that was produced by Sweden's TeddyBears (Robyn). They're now in the studio putting the finishing touches on their new album (title TBA).
The five-piece, featuring co-founders and songwriters MARK MOTHERSBAUGH (lead vocals, synthesizer innovations) and GERALD CASALE (lead vocal, bass) and rounded out by BOB CASALE (guitarist), BOB MOTHERSBAUGH (guitars/vocals) and JOSH FREESE (drums), are set make a special U.S. appearance at SXSW this year including a press conference (4:00pm) and keynote panel (5:00pm)--moderated by radio veteran Nic Harcourt, set for Thursday, March 19 at the Austin Convention Center (500 East Cesar Chavez St.). They'll follow that up with a Friday, March 20 one-night-only SXSW concert at the Austin Music Hall (208 Nueces St.). Pre SXSW, DEVO fans in Dallas can catch a special one-off show on Wednesday, March 18 at the Palladium Ballroom. To purchase tickets, go here: http://www. ticketmaster. com/event/0C004251D5078964?brand=aeglive.
