Is anyone watching this?
I am, and I think it's damn funny.
If you don't know, it's new HBO comedy series (created by Will Ferrell I think) about an aged redneck ex Major League Closer trying to figure out his post-baseball life.
From what I can tell it seems to be loosely based on a combination of John Rocker and Rod Beck.
Basically - Talladega Nights meets Bull Durham

I saw a billboard for this in Penn Station. Just the pic on it and the tagline was enough to make me decide to never watch this show. Its getting terrible reviews, as in "Lucky Louie" type reviews. Yet another Grand Slam for HBO Programming! They should stick to showing movies and boxing, I think.

I watched the first episode. It was ok. It had some laughs, but it was not that great.
I'll try the second episode, but this is not even close to the quality of 1st and Ten.

This show is not even close to being as bad as Lucky Louie.
Much better than 1st and 10.
Again with the terrible reviews claim Tom?
I've just read several reviews online and not a one could be construed as TERRIBLE. The WORST seem to indicate that the show is quite funny but there's probably not enough material there to sustain a long series run. And while no one is declaring a slam dunk success, most, including several prominent newspapers seem to indicate that the show is quite funny but the characters all seem to lack any tangible amount of endearing qualities that would allow viewers to latch on long-term.
So I'm anxious to uncover these "terrible" reviews.

I realize that this is one episode, but even if it were stellar, it wouldn't be on par with 1st and Ten. That show was the best sports related comedy ever made.
This show was ok. Some good one liners, but I agree, no really cool characters, unlike 1st and Ten.

I think 1st and 10 was funny...in the 80s. I was a fan of it, then...(mostly for the gratuitous nudity, however)
But if I were to watch it now, I would find it unbelievably cheesy and lame.
That was a show for it's time....but surely not a timeless show.

It came out on DVD a few years back. The downside of the DVD was that many of the episodes were cut up for syndication. I guess HBO didn't have the uncut versions, though I don't know why.
I found the show still quite watchable, especially during the prime seasons. It wasn't Happy Days or anything like that, but what made the show work then, still works. The characters were well created. And the episodes that did have the nudity kept in them, are timeless.

I never watched First and Ten. Who wants to see nude men, anyway?

You do--you homo!
Of course, the nudity I liked involved the female half of the species.

Didn't we get some Delta Burke (at her prime fighting weight) topless shots with show...or no?

I don't think Delta Burke ever did a nude scene on the show, though she was still pretty hot back then.

First off, HBO sucks a dick for Lucky Louie. The ratings went up each week but they scrapped it because of the material. And PR dick hole can say bad reviews to save face, but the fact is HBO is a bunch of fucking pussies when it comes to standing behind it's shows.
As for this show, fucking love it. And I find it funny a review is bitching about direction of the show due to the endearing qualities, or lack of, of the characters. No fucking shit? A group of dead beat drug using assholes and they expect endearing qualities? The reason the show is as funny as it is is due to them being assholes and just horrible people. Whoever doesn't get that either doesn't pay attention to the show, or just doesn't get it. There is nothing to like about this characters and that's why I like them so much. But that in turn leads to the problem.
HBO. Because the show goes against the grain of what sitcoms are about, HBO will dump it. The same reason Lucky Louie got canceled. God forbid the next door neighbor sells pot. no they need some oddball neighbor sliding through the doorway. HBO sucks a big fat dick. They are allowed to air whatever they want, yet they want material to be in their likings. Well I guess they don't like ratings because they got good ones from Louie and bailed. So I don't expect this to stick around. At HBO, you have to make the shows HBO likes and get ratings, HBO is too fucking stupid to realize they can't because they're out of touch, P.C. little fucking babies. They should rename themselves to BOC, bunch of cunts.

Lucky Louie got cut because it was an awful show. Simple as that.
Eastbound and Down is awesome, not sure if it'll be around for long but I'm enjoying it while it lasts..

I laughed at Lucky Louie more times than I have most shows. But it's a matter of personal taste, the fact the ratings were going up each week means people did enjoy it. It may have been a devoted, loyal O&A fan base, but because HBO is a bunch of chicken shits, we'll never know. To me both shows are pretty similar in that the characters are not good people at all, Kenny Powers is a fucking horrible person. Louie was a pretty big asshole too, especially to his kid. They just exaggerate realistic situations. It will suck when/if Eastbound and Down is cut, I watched him slam dunk the tray of food a few times. I got the 6 pack ready for tonight's episode.
But really I shouldn't defend any show I watch, I like that Tara show now that I think of it.

I watched this for the first time last night. Thought it was OK -- some potential. Last night's episode wasn't anything great but had its moments. The guy who plays the lead character has it down perfectly. I'll definitely keep watching.

My favorite part last night was the beginning, didn't really have much to do with the episode other than the guy became Kenny's assistant. "You crashed.......into a boat......cause you were drunk". And the fucking home run bat he sells was a broken bat home run no less, fucking great. LOL @ wanting 5 grand for it. I actually felt bad when April buys the bat(7 bucks), and she was so let down it came in two pieces. What an ass.
