So I heard some devestating news today.
I had been looking forward to the long ruminated Sherlock Holmes flick for a couple of years now, ever since I heard about pre-production. I saw some stills of the filming recently, and was pretty amped. The cast, I read, was solid, although Robert Downey means little to me and i dont even think I ever saw anything with Jude Law (Watson) in it.
Anyhow, I knew this was pegged for a winter release, and decided I would no doubt see this in the theatre. I never even made "The Wrestler" such a priority.
Well, this morning what do I hear? That they are going to old gay route on this one. Yes, folks, Holmes and Watson - one of the most endearing pairings in literary or cinematic history, are going to be lovers.
Are you f'n kidding me?? Way to take me out of the equation. I have absolutely no interest in seeing a romance of Holmes and Watson. I am one of the most avid Sherlockians out there, Hell, just this week I purchased yet another Holmes pastiche. This one inexplicably has four new Holmes stories set in MONTANA, of all places. So you can imagine how much this news wrecks me.
Look, this is not the homophobe in me. Its just this is NOT how these characters should be portrayed. There is a market for a gritty Holmes tale. The settings, brooding plots, characterizations, all of this could have worked. There is a HUGE market for Holmes. The books still sell tremendously, there is an entire market for the pastiches, and there are classic movies up the kazoo that never got to play to a mass audience in recent decades.
What a drop of the ball. I understand Brokeback Mountain worked, and was considered a masterpiece, and people flocked to see it. But nah, this wont work for Sherlock Holmes. Aside from the tremendous backlash you will see over Sherlockians like me who simply enjoy the character as he is (which is pretty much Asexual, while Watson is a noted womanizer). There is also an army of Holmes fans who take it VERY seriously, and they will be harder to deal with than me over this.
What a disaster.
