I like my team a lot, for the first time in years. Here now, the Opening Day roster for the first two-time champions in Section 39 Baseball history, The Swingin' Dicks!
BATTERS
C - Ramon Hernandez - If you don't get the first few good catchers, it doesn't matter much who you get. I waited until Round 19 to get the 10th-best catcher in last year's league. Hoping for a bounceback, but really, catcher is a seat-filler beyond the top maybe 5 guys.
C - Brandon Inge - He'll start the year at 3rd base for Detroit, and he's eligible at C, 3B, and CF. He'll also start the year on my bench, and he may well be gone if Hernandez makes it to Opening Day healthy.
1B - Prince Fielder - He'll keep getting better. Worth a late second-round pick, surely.
1B - Conor Jackson - Backup, and eligible at LF. Will serve the purpose, and maybe do more than that.
2B - Dan Uggla - With the 98th pick, I got a Top-40 hitter from last year, and a masher at 2B. A steal as he re-ups with the Dicks.
SS - Stephen Drew - He'll be even better than last year. A top 5 SS in our league last year, I expect him to be Top 3 this year.
2B/SS - Mike Aviles - We don't have a mid or corner IF spot in our league...he's just a backup at both spots, and a nice player as well.
3B - David Wright - This was my first pick, #2 overall. Hanley was the first pick, but David Wright was the best hitter in our league last year, and there's no reason to think he won't be this year. I kicked around taking Pujols instead (as you can't go wrong with him either), but I was more confident I would find a great 1B next than a great 3B next. I was right. Welcome back, David!
3B - Joe Crede - His back won't make it to June (May?) on that painted concrete in Minneapolis, but he was my 24th-round pick. And he will bang until he goes down. (That sounded dirty. I like it.) Hell, I may start him in the utility spot. Might want to get whatever blood I can out of that stone until he hits my DL.
LF - Carlos Lee - El Caballo can flat-out mash. Full season out of him may win me the league. Encouraged by Panama going out of the WBC after just two games. Down to business with you, horse.
CF - Chris Young - I really like him. I'd like to see his average continue to go up a bit. And I'd like to see him run more. Don't know how he will turn out. But he'll do. If not, his backup might actually be better with the extra 100 at-bats he'll get this year.
CF - Mike Cameron - Reliable in a points league. No suspensions delaying things this year. Age is a concern, but I'm not counting on him. He is a bonus for where I got him.
RF - Hunter Pence - Sacrificed average for power in his second season. Hopefully he will find the balance this year. If he doesn't, his power probably goes up, and that's just fine by me!
RF - Nelson Cruz - Taking a flyer on him. Looking for a breakthrough this year. Batted .330 in limited action last year. He's a backup for me.
PITCHERS
SP
Jake Peavy - This may well end up as my biggest mistake of the draft, as I took Peavy ahead of Webb. I don't think I can go wrong with Peavy, and I'm betting on him pitching his ass off, getting traded to a contender, and having a monster second half to go along with a great first half. Don't think he will be my downfall, but I acknowledge I rolled the dice a bit rather than doing the smart, safe move.
James Shields - Stud. Pure and simple.
Felix Hernandez - Wild Card. No denying his stuff, but his awful team holds back his win total. His ERA keeps dropping, and his stuff is awesome. Needs to trim the walks a bit, but he can be great.
Yovani Gallardo - Freak injury last year trying to avoid the collision at first, screwing his ACL. But it wasn't his arm. He has 20-win stuff.
Zach Greinke - The Royals seem like they have some sort of a lineup this season, so maybe that wil be good for a few more wins. But Grienke is a stud anyway. Very happy with him.
Hiroki Kuroda - I might have taken Sonnanstine here in the 17th if I didn't already have Shields. I like Kuroda, ad I like the Dodgers' chances this year. Really the only reason I took him. Probably would have been available later. Happier about the next two guys.
Manny Parra - Hate having two guys on the same team, but it's better than having two hitters from the same team in the same lineup. Parra is a backup, and he was the best pitcher I had on the board when I took him.
Andy Sonnanstine - See above. I was surprised he was still available in the 23rd round. Almost shocked, really. Thanks, guys!
RP
Joey Devine - He will end up being the A's closer, if he doesn't start the year that way. He's nasty. Might have to bench him the first week or two, but looking for lightning in a bottle here.
Joel Hanrahan - He's got the job in Washington, and he'll have it for a while. I learned last year with Putz not to go high for a closer, because even the best just die for whatever reason, with no rhyme or reason. So I'm fine with Hanrahan.
Chad Qualls - Same thing. He has the job in AZ. He'll save 30. I'll take it.
Ladies and gentlemen, your 2009 Swingin' Dicks!

Im still not seeing a pitching staff better than mine.
Oh, and Laura, outside of Santana you got a bunch of question marks on the hill.

Don't be a hater. You will be so jealous when Carmona returns to his 2007 form, Kyle Davies shines as the ace for the 2009 AL Central Champion Kansas City Royals, Matt Garza holds our division hostage & my boy Lilly becomes the 20-game winner I always knew he could be...
I'm actually a little nervous about having a TB starter & a Boston closer... difficult lineup decisions with the jinx factor and all.

Looking at Tom's pitching staff, his questions start after Hamels and Webb. Cliff Lee isn't going to have the year he had last year. Beyond that - plenty of questions.

Lee can win 20% less games and still do better than most of all of your #1s as a # 3. Either way, Ill like his 200 innings.
Hey, Im not the only one with "plenty of questions."

If you also think Hamels isn't a question mark ... Last season was the only full season he's ever pitched, including the minor leagues.
Having said that, you can say similar things about every pitcher because they get hurt easily.
Pussies.

If you also think Hamels isn't a question mark ... Last season was the only full season he's ever pitched, including the minor leagues. Come on, now. Interesting! The year before last, you know - one of those "non-full" seasons he pitched, he won 14 games and threw 180 plus innings. Can you imagine what he would have done in a "full season?" Wow! Even in 2006, he started 23 games in the majors and 8 in the minors. I guess that THIRTY ONE START SEASON was an abbreviated season??? He should have started 40 times that year, and saved me from your speech! In his 3 season major league career, he has thrown nearly 600 innings, and he wont be 26 until next December. Oh....and pssst.....he even threw over 100 minor league innings in 2003, when he was but 19 years old. Not many 19 year olds are throwing more than that. Should I have not drafted him, this lack of experience and all?? Suzy, dont bring a knife to a gunfight. Wow.

my fantasy league is run by my co-worker, who happens to be the head stats guy at mlb.com. It makes me want to curl up in a ball and cry.
I may not like Cole Hamels at all, but he's far from questionable as a starter.

Wow, I'm not ripping Hamels at all. I like him as a pitcher, I think he has great stuff ... in fact, I drafted him two years ago (you know, the year I won) and would do it again have I had the chance.
The point I am making is that when you question other pitcher's health, the same questions can be had for any pitcher on any team.
Secondly, I reiterate last season was the first full, healthy season Hamels has pitched in his entire career, including the minors. He had an elbow problem, back problems and broke his hand in a bar fight. Hamels himself was amazed at the amount of innings he had thrown last year and was able to stay healthy.
Hamels was only singled out because you said other pitchers had question marks. Just letting you know, he does too.

Where, pray tell, did I mention anything about a pitchers health?

Eh, Justin started all this. Interesting how you always bypass others to shoot at me. Im not the only other person in the league, or the only other person making points you know. Why dont you give HIM the speech?

Eh, we got a guy who enters stats for a living at Elias, and he finished last a couple of years ago.
And I started nothing. Tom came out and mentioned how his staff is better than anyone's, and Laura has a lot of questions. That started things.
You wanted participation...you got it.

BTW, there's no crying in baseball.
I may have questions, but my rotation will still kick ass. Bottom line is that it is all a gamble and you have to go with your gut.
I have to give kudos to Justin, because as usual, he drafted no less than 5 players right before I was going to take them. It's not like no one else picks players I was interested in, but Justin has the eerie knack of snagging my next pick right before I have the chance to make it...
