He has to say YES, if he is. Even if I cross my fingers? Why are FTA receivers illegal in the USA? No I was just asking cause this a pretty tech savvy crowd.

What does a FTA receiver do?

Yea, but if Direct or DISH find out you are pirating you could get in trouble.
I've toyed with the idea of FTA, but haven't really investigated it too deeply. Are you considering it?

I used to do the DirecTV smart card re-writing. I still have the equipment, the software, and still have tons of old binary files laying around that I could re-write to a DirecTV card and decode all channels. Those were the days. But new technologies in the new generations of cards ended all that.
Is there some new caveat to this...is this possible once again?
(Way to out myself on the internet! HAHA)

I'm not saying that I have a FTA reciever - I have a friend that has a friend that has one.
An FTA reciever is a Free To Air reciever. I'm not an expert but this is how it's been explained to me.
It's designed to recieve signals from all over the world. It can pull down all sorts of signals from all over the place. Plently of those signals aren't encrypted or scrambled so you can just pull them down and watch em very easily.
But the VAST majority of those channels are not in english. However - with a minor adjustment to the programming on your FTA reciever you can ....um.... make use of some of the North American signals. NOT Direct TV...but there are at least two other carriers that I have heard about that work.
The "minor adjustment" is done very simply via a USB key. My friend's friend just downloads a file from the internet onto the USB key - sticks that into his or her FTA reciever and then selects "update reciever" on his or her remote control and there you have it.

Two questions, folks.
1 - Emma got a dog that is supposed to plug into the computer using a "standard USB cord" that is not provided. Thing is, when you look at the bottom of the dog, the PORT is more a modem/phone jack. Is there a USB cord that is jacked on the one end? I have asked around and no one seems to know.
2 - In the frivolous question of the day, what is a good site for desktop wallpapers? I am the sort who needs to change it up every couple of days. I found some cool sites with prepared wallpapers with mountain scenes, waterfalls, elk, hockey fights, etc. Thing is, they were spam and pop-up havens, and totally screwed up my computer at the time. While we have added a virus protector, i am not keen on returning unless I know I am not going to run into trouble again. Where do you guys get your backgrounds? And yeah, I generally take any random pic I find and "set as background" but I would also like to find a wallpaper source.

Standard USB cable IS square on one end, similar to an ethernet/cat5 or phone jack... look at the back of your printer to see the port...

Has anyone ever seen The Harlem Globetrotters? They are coming to Anaheim this month, I'm thinking about taking the kids.

I considered the same back in the day. They play the Nassau Coliseum, not too far from me. It was fun enough looking family fare, and the prices were ok. But I would also think if you are not close to the action, its not as cool. The "confettii in the bucket instead of water trick" probably looks better from right there, and not a level up.
Its something different to do, as a parent I would sign off on it.

If the Washington Generals aren't available, the New Jersey Nets are a viable substitute.

I remember reading a sordid account way back when from an old Washington General, talking about the groupies they had following the team. They would go clown with the Globetrotters on the court, then run a train back in the hotel.
He said traveling with the Generals and Globetrotters was an X rated perk to a G rated job.

I was bemused by the fact that it takes only 15 minutes or so to get from Jamaica to the airport. Once I know my terminal is it simple enough to know when to hop off the thing, or is this something I am apt to flub.
Hey, remember just before it opened the kid got killed doing a "test run" - the airtrain stopped, and they went in there to find this kid dead, cause all this stuff they had loaded in his car to simulate passenger weight had shifted around and did him in.

I have used it on numerous occasions and it is absolutely fan-fucking-tastic, compared to how it was before the AirTrain was in service.
As a frequent traveler, my advise is to also check out the local Avistar lot. I rarely use the airport lots any longer because you can never tell when they will be full (or just closed). With Avistar, you make a reservation, there is a good AAA discount, and they have a bus taht takes you right to your terminal, they pick you up when you call, your car is waiting for you at the gate of the lot when you get to the lot, and it's about the same price as the airport lot.
BTW, I will be in the Phoenix area around the same time Tom........

Jackass, I am flying in on Monday the 17th (happy St Pats day) and we're on our own that eve, then the next day is all-day meetings followed by a hearty repaste, and we fly out on Thursday afternoon. Actually ending up in, and staying in, Scottsdale.
No car rentin' for me. This AirTrain will take me right to my terminal? Not sure of my flight details yet.

to answer your question, yes, it drops you pretty much at the terminal (i believe there is an escalator and a short walk)
