I suppose I have entered the "modern era." After 9 years working with a mobile company and being entitled to any equipment I want for free, I finally grabbed a Blackberry. The 8900, I say. I decided to upgrade a few months ago, but had to wait until the high-demand item was available for employees.
Set it up last night, added an email address, browsed online using the EDGE network. On Boxseatsucks advice, checked out crackberry.com, and found some decent apps to consider. Its a work in progress, I need to monitor how fast I suck out battery clicking around. Sites like The Hockey News and Pro Wrestling Torch have "mobile" versions of their websites, which are sweet shimmy on this thing. I went over to YouTube with my unlimited data plan and watched a Tommy Rich match from the AWA.
Going to download an app that gets me streaming radio stations, and loaded a killler ringtone, a stirring Viking anthem, that sounds epic in scope and makes my calls the most important ones in the world.
So, who is using Blackberries. Tips, tricks? Thank you, have a good day.

Could this not have just been put in the useless facts thread instead of clogging up the main section of this message board? Jw

Nope. Things in useless facts can be buried within hours. Also, I want this to be my go-to cheatsheet for all things Blackberry, as although i am in the mobile industry, I am not well versed in the particulars of gadgitry.
There is no charge to read extra threads on this board, John. And we also are in no rush to get the Useless Facts thread to 300 pages. Whats the harm in a new thread now and again?

I had to get a blackberry earlier this year for work. I opted for the Pearl 83somethinganother. I love it. The Curve and the like were simply too bulky for a girl like me with small hands. I didn't like the idea of having a blackberry, but now I don't know what I'd do without it. I use www.phonezoo.com for all my ringtones. All completely free - but there are a ton of sites for that. I recommend googling 'best free blackberry apps' Go Tom! I remember jocking you not too long ago about your phone choice. So, welcome to the club.

I was able to simply import that song from my Windows Media Player, where I have thousands of tunes to choose from, so I think I may steer from ringtone sites. Im interested in this radio site where you can stream hundreds of stations around the country on your phone, though.
I have one more phone to nab before June, that will be a Sunset 8320 for Dana, who likes the snazzy colors.

You should invest in BB Messenger. Fun times indeed.

What the Hell is that?
This is set up for Instant Messaging as it is, I tested out my AIM last night on it.

My mom doesn't have unlimited texting, so BB Messenger is what we us. It's like aim for people with blackberries. you have a pin# in your options and you use that to add other people. It's good for work contacting and people contacting. If you have unlimited texting like i do, it's pretty pointless.

My phone STILL (nothing has changed) makes calls and takes calls.
I think there's a calculator or an alarm clock on there too.
Despite these limitations, somehow I've managed to survive in this new world.

in addition to my iphone, I use a blackberry 8700 from work. It's sort of an older one at this point but the thing is built like a tank. remember the old nokia 5160? you could drop that thing anywhere and it would bounce once and it would be fine. this thing is the same. At some point I'm going to have to upgrade it, but I really don't care to have the newer ones. They look too delicate. The Pearl has keys that are too small for me.

On www.phonezoo.com , you can upload any mp3 you have on your 'puter, and edit which part you want as your tone, and it'll text the link to your phone so you can download it and use it. It's pretty damn sweet. and free!

Downloaded another app, that although I dont see where I would need to use it often, its ok to have for some downtime. www.iheartradio.com - what this thing does is add some streaming radio to your Blackberry. Stations from around the country, about 150 choices for now, but constantly expanding. For now I saved a couple of classic rock monoliths, a classic country station, a 60s and 70s hit station, a Conservative talk station, and a wacky morning zoo free on demand thing. These stations are from places ranging from San Diego, the Twin Cities, Denver, and Cleveland. I have it set as a folder on my BB, and when I ckick I had set it so one of the classic rock stations immediatly starts playing, while you browse from there.

I had a Blackberry for close to a year, but as soon as I was eligible for an upgrade on my contract I moved up to the G1, which is almost just like the Blackberry, just not. Faster internet connection, touch screen, etc. And I refuse to go back to Blackberry or any phone that is as reliant on the tracking ball such as the Blackberry. After 8 months of having the phone, the tracking ball got all screwy and will not move to the right, all the other directions and buttons, fine. Tracking ball to the right. no good. It pretty much made the phone useless, when you're not able to move the ball over to select which icon to click on. So the blackberry is dead to me.
but now after a week with the G!, I went to use my phone laying in bed this morning, and the light for when the phone is charging stays on and the the screen will not unlock. Doesn't even light up. I need to try and pop the back off and remove the battery and restart it but I can't get under the fucking back because I don't have long enough nails. Anyone know what can be done aside from taking the battery out?

Im guessing here....is there a hole for a pinprick reset? Kinda like on an MP3 player?

Not sure, I'd have to look. I know that back comes off I just can't get under it to get it off, cause it's a slide screen so I don't want to rip off the screen from the rest of the phone by accident. There might be that pinprick thing, I think i saw something like that, would have to double check. I really don't want to be without a phone again especially a phone that doesn't even receive calls, at least with the tracking ball f'd up on my blackberry I could still get and make calls. Today is not starting off very good.

No good on the pin prick thing, I have to take the battery put and hope that resets it. I have to stop messing with it cause I came close to throwing it against the wall. This is really starting to piss me off.

there's got to be some kind of reset sequence? The good thing about blackberries is that literally 90% of their problems can be solved by taking out the battery.

Just got back from my nearest TMobile store and the guy had no idea what happened. But, sure enough, taking out the battery worked, and my phone is fully operational. I can only assume that it either just plain ole' froze up on me, or there was some kind of shortage, or short in the socket and it locked up. I'll probably never know unless it happens again, I can only hope it isn't defective and keeps happening.

When I got my blackberry I was debating going for the G1, but it was just so dang ugly when I saw it, aesthetics completely overtook the badassness of the phone. Maybe if they offered it in pink!

Jesus you think it's already ugly but want to put an uglier color instead? Being a girl aside, you really can't like pink on a phone? I bet there's little to no demand for pink anything for any phone ever.

hahahaha. well phone colors are pretty standard. I mean I'd go for a light blue phone, but that's not really an option. There's plenty of pink phones though. There's plenty of pink everything. Maybe you just block it out.

I see it, I just don't understand the demand for it. It's not a good looking color and I'm not saying that because I feel the need to prove I'm manly, being objective, I don't get it. It's ugly and asking to be stolen. I see pink shit everywhere, it draws attention. And it's not a good move drawing attention to electronics in Brentwood.

OK, so I'm considering an upgrade to a BlackBerry... I've been eligible for an upgrade for about 2 years & just haven't gotten around to it... I'm not sure if I *need* a BlackBerry, but right now the Pearl is being offered for free as an upgrade...
The Pearl has a bunch of bad reviews on the Verizon wireless site... from people who LIKE this phone, how do you rate the battery life? The other big complaints were volume (being unable to make the ringer or speaker volume loud enough) and that it responds very slowly...
Any reason to spend $100 on the Curve or $200 on the Storm, vs the free Pearl?
What makes Blackberry better (or not better) than other "smartphones," like the Samsung Omnia or Saga?
