So, as an employee of the Yankees, he cheated the teammates, the club, and the fans. Yankees could have had 5 more world series wins IF he was not so bombed all the time.
(damn, Mantle's numbers are sick. If he was sober, he could have been the greatest ever)

I wouldn't go that far as to say they win 5 more championships.
The last 4 years of his career, he probably could have batted 1.000 and the Yanks wouldn't have won a championship.
Other than that, he was in the WS every year but 2. One year, they weren't any good. The other the Indians were 8 games better.
But I do think he could have been the best ever too. I can't blame it ALL on the booze. The injuries killed him.

LOL @ Balls ignoring Mantle's admitted reliance on greenie/speed during his career.

I doubt it. If speed helped, it was the running kind, not the pill. Any enhancement a drug would help him would have been countered by the booze, hangovers, and injuries.

Hey, retard, what do you think "amphetamines" are? You are shredding Giambi for failing a test, and giving Mantle a pass for using the same thing?

Hey retard, show some proof that Mantle failed an amphetimine test.
And again, fool, the two wrongs do not make a right defense is moronic. No wonder you use it.

Thats kind of a contradiction. IF the speed countered the Booze that was dragging him down, it stands to reason that countering a negative is in-and-of-itself a positive. Without the speed to counter the booze he coulda been worse. Therefore it is arguable that speed did, in fact, improve his performance.
EDIT: and Mick admitted using taking the pills, so there's proof enough, no?

Where did he admit it?
And what does speed exactly do to improve your hitting? It doesn't make you stronger.
Amphetimines don't make your whole career a sham.
Steroids do.
But either way, feel free to invalidate Mantle's career.
It has absolutely NOTHING to do with Giambi. Pointing at someone else does not defend Giambi.

Eh, you need to read up on this guy, Balls.
Jim Bouton first blew his cover in BALL FOUR. After that came out, Mantle admitted to his foibles. Accounts are all over.
Glad to see you are paying attention! Then again, if its not on the YES Network, what would you know about anything?

Speed is good for...well...speed for one thing - stealing bases, snagging fly balls. How 'bout bat speed?
But I read here about Giambi that hitting isn't the only thing in the game is it.
And since you asked, allow me to ask; What do Steroids exactly do to improve your hitting?

If it doesn't involve bashing a Yankee, you don't seem to have knowledge of much. www.vegasinsider.com/document_display.cfm?document_id=383509"- Amphetamines are not considered performance enhancers that give players a competitive advantage, but rather performance enablers that get them through some games on little sleep." And by the way, here's a quote from Jim Bouton, your source: A number of the Yankees in the 1960s were using greenies, Bouton claimed, saying ``mostly it was a private transaction in the trainer's room.'' He said he never saw Mickey Mantle take an amphetamine, despite Mantle's infamous late-night carousing. So where's your source?

Uh...you are going to take a snippet from the article as Bouton's take??? Boutons book was 400 pages long...he went pretty into detail about the habits of Mr Mantle. Dont question me, you jackoff.
And why are you printing a defense to amphetamines in the same exact thread you attacked Jason Giambi in for using? You said yourself, apparently it means nothing!

Yes, and a little research on Yahoo shows that Bouton's discussions on Mantle involved drinking, not speed.
Giambi is a druggie--plain and simple. He's a discredit to the game. Cocaine doesn't help you play better either. It turns you into Knuckles. But that doesn't mean it's right to take it.

If Steve Howe's career is a sham because of Coke, so is the Mick's.
But I agree Giambi's career as well as the Mick's are SHAMS and INVALID. Strike the 7 off of the outfield wall. Take Mantle out of the damn song. Dig up the Mick and send him to West Covina with Giambi.
And while I'm at it; Why is someone with near 20/20 vision having Lasik to improve their hitting? How is that really different from HGH. So, sorry old friend Rene - BERNIE is a sham too Bye Bye 51 via con dios, cheater. Bernie's eyes were fine. He had the surgery to improve his failing eyesight. He artificially improved a muscle to better his play.
I say pump 'em all up. HGH in the off-season, Roids in spring training, Coke at batting practice. Bionic eyes, arms, legs whatever it takes.

Mantle is an alcoholic. There has not been any evidence that Mantle used any drugs.
And since Mantle was not suspended 7 times for cocaine, you can't compare him to Steve Howe.
You can't compare a drug enhancement, which is illegal and deadly, to laser eye surgery.

Funny thing is, I was about to yell at whoever started this thread for getting Balls going, then I realized it was Balls who started the thread.

Given that in the past week he gets in the news for steroids and amphetimines, it was worth the thread. He's worse than Lloyd Bridges in Airplane!

Now the validity of the "failed amphetamine story" is being questioned, and it may not be true after all. Some of you may be eating even more crow than you are used to dining on shortly. sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2879878

Anyone who does not believe that speed is a performance enhancing drug knows NOTHING about drug action. Illegal, OTC or prescription stimulants allow athletes to have more energy, build endurance for workouts, significantly increase focus and concentration, and can act as appetite supressants for weight loss.

Anyone who fears Giambi's bat is a moron. The guy had 11 hits in the entire month of May.
OBP doesn't mean as much when you have a guy who can't run in the middle of your lineup. He drove in a whopping 6 runs in May.
I'm sure the pitchers quiver.
