Doumit is not a good fit behind the plate. If they are enamored with him, they can move him.

Yeah, i figure they'll wait til he figures it out behind the plate, hits 330 with power, and then they'll trade him

Tampa picked up LeVon Washington. He's a Boras client though (gah) so who knows when he'll sign. hopefully soon enough to get into the end of the season roster.

Im still listening, they are streaming through round 3 tonight. An interesting guy still on the board, projected to go amongst the first 200 picks overall, is Shaver Hansen, out of Baylor.
Hansen is the son of Stan "The Lariat" Hansen.

Well, there goes Hansen in the 5th round, to Seattle.
And in another fun note, in that same round Ruben Sierra Jr went to the Texas Rangers.

The Nationals are ready to make an offer of 20 million to make Strassberg the highest paid draft pick ever.
Strassberg has hired Boras. Boras is talking 50 million….for a DRAFT PICK….and has already threatened having Strassberg sign in Japan.

They will settle around the 20 million. No way Strasburg goes out for another year, be it Japan, or Indy ball. The line is long on guys who have played the Indy ball card, and either got hurt, or regressed badly due to getting off the program. Everyone knows thats a bluff.
The main thing is Boras - and a brainwashed Strasburg - want to be paid higher than any first round pick, and more to boot. Washington will listen to that - this guy IS on his own stratosphere. But that still does not mean 50 million. Trust me, they will meet somewhere around the 20. Washington is moving fast, they already signed their 2nd pick - 10th overall, for under 2 million. So lets be realistic.

I hope they're realistic...because if Boras gets anywhere in over 40 million for this kid...he's going to spoil the fucking draft for years to come.....we'll wind up seeing handfuls of Drew Hensons every year. Michael Kay was talking about this on the radio today and mentioned 103 mph on the radar gun....did I miss something? This is horseshit....Strassburg hit 103 on a radar? No way.

That number of 103 has been tossed about. Not calling it fact, but Ive read it here and there too. Thats about as fast as someone can throw without snapping an arm.
While I find the 50 million dollar tag absurd, just today the POST reported that the Jets signed their QB Draft-pick Sanchez for exactly that - $50 million over 5 years. Wheres the outrage?
Again, these guys will meet in the middle. He wont get 40, believe me. Boras is bluffing, no way this kid and this promise risks injury in Japan or regression in Indy ball. He needs to get signed, and move on with his promising career.

Tom, I was discussing this with someone yesterday.
HUGE difference between baseball and other sports.
Other sports draft players out of high school and college who are presumably MAJOR LEAGUE ready. It's not like Mark Sanchez is owned by the Jets but will hone his craft in the CFL for 3 to 5 years. Basketball lottery picks are expected to not only play, but IMPACT a team from day 1.
In the case of Strassburg, you're basically paying an "intern" as if he were the CEO.

Cho, most scouts agree STRASBURG IS MAJOR LEAGUE READY.
In fact, if he signed today, odds are he is pitching for Washington by late summer. And there is NO WAY he does even more than part of one season as an "intern" in the minors. He is ready to hit the show.
So thanks for supporting Boras' argument by giving him more ammo here.

I think we'll see Strasburg sooner rather than later. If he were drafted to a better team, I would said wait, but when you're the nats.... I say scoot lannan back a step and let SS throw!

not that it means anything, but Strasberg was picked up weeks ago in one of my fantasy leagues, and I'm gonna pick him up in my other league, which is a keeper league

it wont mean anything, cause his likely role if he comes up is the pen (they wont put a lot of innings on him) and even if he starts, he will be throwing less than Joba innings.
If you can get him in a keeper league, by all means.

does Wash. benefit by waiting til June 1 2010 to bring him up, for arbitration/free agency reasons, or will that not matter because of his contract he'll eventually sign?

Rick Monday was the first ever overall number one draft pick. He received a $104,000 signing bonus.

There is honestly no advantage to Washington to rush him up this year, which is why I find all the speculation of him pitching in the majors this year a bit silly. I mean, whats the rush, to sell a couple of extra seats? They'lll do the right thing. Also, if he DOES sign, it probably wont be till the deadline....these guys always do. Thats AUGUST. That will knock the season out anyway.
No way he signs anytime soon, giving him enough real time to make a dent.

The Red Sox have drafted Carl Yazstremski's grandson and Frank McCourt's son.

If the past couple of years are any indication, the Yankees will counter by signing Oscar Gamble's niece as an undrafted free agent.

Yanks made a couple of those "thanks for being here" sorta picks over the years. Nettles' son, Randolphs son, people like that. They all flamed out without getting out of rookie ball, cause they were signed mainly as favors and tips of the hat.

Re: Baseball Notes « Reply #1518 on Jun 4, 2009, 10:15pm »
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Have you guys heard the exploits of this 16 year old baseball prodigy from Vegas named Bryce Harper.
Tom Verducci, who did the upcoming SI cover story on him, traveled to Vegas skeptical of the Paul Bunyan like tales, until he met the kid, family, coaches, scouts, and saw film.
This kid has allegedly hit a 570 foot HR (aluminum bat). He has factually hit a 502 foot HR this year and a 517 foot HR at age 15 (again, aluminum bat).
Verducci claims the kid can hit MLB pitching now, and given the assumed learning curve that top prospects go through in their late teens, he is projected to be a top 5-caliber hitter at the a major league level by the end of his teens (Verducci's predictions...not scouting reports).

Ill reserve judgement on Bryce Harper until another couple of years go by. He is not eligible for the draft until 2011. While I am sure he wont necessarily regress, lots can happen. He is not really facing good competition at all, which makes me a little surprised at the gushing by Verducci. I read somewhere this is not the first time Verducci waved someone flag only for that someone to end up nowhere at all, but I'll withhold judgement.
PS - Prince Fielder was hitting near-500 foot home runs before 15 as well, including some with wood (albeit during BP hanging around with his Dad) -- while Prince Fielder is nice to have around, his prodigious power has not manifested itself above all others since.
