RONNIE JAMES DIO Diagnosed With Stomach Cancer - Nov. 25, 2009 Wendy Dio, the wife and manager of legendary heavy metal vocalist Ronnie James Dio (DIO, HEAVEN & HELL, BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW), has released the following statement to BLABBERMOUTH.NET:
"Ronnie has been diagnosed with the early stages of stomach cancer. We are starting treatment immediately at the Mayo Clinic. After he kills this dragon, Ronnie will be back on stage, where he belongs, doing what he loves best, performing for his fans.
"Long live rock and roll, long live Ronnie James Dio.
"Thanks to all the friends and fans from all over the world that have sent well wishes. This has really helped to keep his spirit up."
Ronnie James Dio, 67, has performed with ELF, RAINBOW, BLACK SABBATH, and his own band DIO. Other musical projects include the collective fundraiser "Hear 'n Aid". He is widely hailed as one of the most powerful singers in heavy metal, renowned for his consistently powerful voice and for popularizing the "devil's horns" hand gesture in metal culture. He is currently involved with HEAVEN & HELL, a project which also includes former BLACK SABBATH bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice. Their first studio album, "The Devil You Know", was released on April 28, 2009.
DIO cancelled its European tour last week after Ronnie was taken ill. The band's lineup for the trek was supposed to include WHITESNAKE/ex-DIO axeman Doug Aldrich due to the fact that the group's regular guitarist, Craig Goldy, had prior touring commitments with BUDGIE in Australia.
DIO's last release was the "Holy Diver Live" CD, featuring a performance of the classic "Holy Diver" album in its entirety, from start to finish, recorded live for the very first time in 2005 in front of a sold-out London crowd.

And, as to be expected, Heaven and Hell announced this week that they are cancelling all summer appearances they had on the docket. Not sure what took them so long to do this. I am hearing different stories about how Dio is doing, but I imagine it cant be totally well. Stomach cancer as it is is a bitch, and the guy is going to be 68 years old this July.
I wish him well, and despite all the optimistic talk of "more music to be made, and more live shows to be done" - i just want him to be well enough to live a good life going forward.

Very sad news, Ronnie James Dio has died. I had heard a couple of days ago from a fringe source that his cancer had returned, and they were "making him comfortable." But that news was not really out. I ended up playing a lot of Dio today, anticipating the bad news. And its true, he has passed.
May he rest easy! What a wealth of music this man has left behind. God bless him.

AND he may not be dead. In fact, looks like he is still alive. His wife released a statement around 230 AM saying he was not dead - "not doing well, but not dead." Who knows where this is going, I think things are still bleak, as he is right now hospitalized.

As of this morning, this news is sadly offical. Rest in peace, Ronnie James Dio. Ill have more tomorrow.
Legendary Heavy Metal Vocalist RONNIE JAMES DIO Dies - May 16, 2010 Wendy Dio, wife/manager of legendary heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio (DIO, HEAVEN & HELL, BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW), has released the following statement to BLABBERMOUTH.NET:
"Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45 a.m. [on Sunday] 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private goodbyes before he peacefully passed away.
"Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all.
"We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us.
"Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss.
"Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever."
It was only a month ago that Dio, 67, spoke about his battle with cancer with the Artisan News Service on the "black carpet" of the Revolver Golden Gods Awards, which took place on April 8 at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles. When asked about how he had been feeling since he was diagnosed with the disease late last year, Dio said, "Well, I feel good and bad at times. It's a long process. Chemotherapy is a... I never realized what a difficult thing it was to go through. It's a real cumulative effect — the more you have, the more it piles up on top and it takes longer and longer to get over it. I find it very difficult to eat. I don't like to eat anyway, so I guess that's OK. But I know I have to. But this makes it very, very hard. But if you're determined to beat it, then you have to go with what you believe is going to beat it for you, and in this case it's that. I go to a great hospital in Houston called M.D. Anderson, which I think is the best hospital in the world, I have the best doctor in the world, Dr. Ajani, who I really trust and I really believe in, so I think I've done all the right things. It makes me feel positive about my life and positive that there is a lot more of it to live."
Earlier this month, HEAVEN & HELL canceled its summer tour plans in Europe due to Dio's treatment for stomach cancer. The band said in a statement that Dio wasn't "well enough to tour this summer. We hope that everyone understands and want to thank fans and industry colleagues for their continuing support at this time."
Born Ronald James Padavona in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Ronnie James Dio had performed with ELF, RAINBOW, BLACK SABBATH, and his own band DIO. Other musical projects included the collective fundraiser "Hear 'n Aid". He is widely hailed as one of the most powerful singers in heavy metal, renowned for his consistently powerful voice and for popularizing the "devil's horns" hand gesture in metal culture. He was most recently involved with HEAVEN & HELL, a project which also included former BLACK SABBATH bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice. Their first and only studio album, "The Devil You Know", was released on April 28, 2009.
In April, Dio appeared at the Revolver Golden Gods Awards in Los Angeles to accept the award for "Best Vocalist." As members of ALICE IN CHAINS presented the award to him, the crowd chanted, "Dio! Dio! Dio! Dio!"

So its been a long few days for me, in regards to the DIO thing. Starting early last week, I had seen a tip from a metal insider that Dio's cancer had returned, and they were "making him comfortable." That unsettled me enough to where I started spinning his music then, and have not stopped till pretty much today.
So it was 2AM Saturday into Sunday as i was readying myself for the sack when i found out poking around on my phone that he died. I was very sad, and went upstairs to check out the online, and to fill in the couple of wholes on my CD collection on Amazon download. After about an hour, I see a statement from his wife that he is NOT dead. I knew this was just delaying the inevitable, as her statement included, "he is not doing well...but he is not dead."
But talk of a "hoax" was premature, as he died early Sunday morning, and the official news was out later in the afternoon. By that time I was in the yard, spinning nonstop Dio on the Zune....like 5 hours worth! And not one song twice, with the exception of live versions off differing discs. This continued yesterday at work, where I spent the whole 8 plus hours at the desk spinning Dio CDs.
Im burnt out, not cause the music wore on me, but Im emotionally spent. I put a lot into this one. I said on Facebook, and I think this is true indeed - I cant think of anyone in music whose death would affect ME in this way. The guy left SUCH A LEGACY. I own so much of his stuff. I think Paul Dianno would hit me harder, only cause he is my absolute favorite. But Dianno does not nearly have the rep as a person, or the legacy of music in terms of sheer volume.
So I am sad. But my Zune is full of his goods! 4 discs from Rainbow. 3 from Black Sabbath, and then the Live Evil stuff. What, like 8 solo Dio discs? And even his bluesy stuff with ELF.
May he rest in peace! We loved him, and are grateful for the music he has left behind.
