I don't drink anymore, but I still get out to a bar here and there on rare occasions to socialize with friends. Someone brought this place up this morning, so I thought I'd try and invent a way to talk about it here. The first time I ever went to Joe Jost's in Long Beach, I was told to meet a friend there - we were meeting up to see The Dickies at a club in Long Beach. My friend tells me, if I get there before him, to simply order the special. So that's what happened...I belly up to the bar and ask for the special. The guy nods, pours me a monster size schooner full of Pabst, then takes out a slice of rye-bread, throws a hot dog in the middle of it, takes a knife and slices down the length of the hot dog, half-way through and takes a pickle wedge and shoves in the slice on the hot dog. Then he throws a bunch of pretzel sticks all over the plate and tops it off with a pickled egg. After all that he charges me $2.50! I'm looking around, and it's nothing but dock workers sitting there getting fucked up and watching the Lakers game. Apparently Joe Jost's is sort of a weird combo of a local dock worker's hang, and a hot spot for the young party crowd. Cool place, nonetheless. EDIT: I didn't think Joe Jost's would have a website, but gijane's post prompted me to look, and here ya go: www.joejosts.com/

In Manhattan: Big Easy, 2nd and 92nd. The owner is one of my best friends, so I have a slight bias. Several Beirut tables, cheap beer, loud music and general chaos that I would probably hate in a bar where I didn't know a good chunk of people.
In Hoboken: Ted & Jo's. Exact opposite of Big Easy. Good food, good beer, crowd in the 30s, music loud enough to enjoy but not so loud that it drowns out conversations.

I have 2 favorite bars first has gotta be Piper's Kilt 231st street and Albany Crescent, Bronx. Its a pretty typical Irish-American pub Great burgers, cheap beer, and i'm good friends with the weekend bartender. That and its 2 blocks form my house. my other fav is currently closed but set to re open soon. The Blind Tiger Ale house, 26 micro draft beers dozens of bottles and a nice chill crowd, it's probly the best Beer BAr in the city always something Interesting on tap

Now that Jeremys is simply part of bleacher lore, I will have to peg The Peculiar Pub as my favorite place to rope a gathering, or catch one or three after work. Mainly for the beer selection. It does not have much else going for it, I suppose. The jukebox is ok. It does not get too crowded too early, and when you get older, you learn to like this in a bar.
Peculiar has 250-300 kinds of bottled ales from around the world, all hovering around the same price people pay for a Bud in other bars. Its in a good locale, on Bleecker. I have held a few birthday gatherings there, and will do so again.

The Gin Mill (81st & Amsterdam) is a spot that I spent many a Saturday when I wanted the Hatch special but not the Hatch crowd. Everybody that I brought there loved it.

I went to the Gin Mill for the first time with a close friend of mine. His pre-game bachelor party was hosted there. We had the private room downstairs. The drinks were cheap, and the service was awesome.
My favorite bar as of late has been P.J. Clarkes on 55th and 3rd. Happen to know the bartenders quite well in this fine establishment.

Hmmm this is a tough one....My all time favorite ihas to be Rockridge Saloon..formaly aces and eights ...$5 all the beer you can drink from 5-10 on Fri and on Sat 8 - 12....Many many good time to be had there ...too bad it moved and eventually closed.... My next favorite would have to be Down the Hatch...just because of the memories, I could tell stories for hours.... At one point we were going almost weekly about 12 years ago....never had a bad time there ... and everyone I have brought there keeps bugging me to go back...Other than that I really don't have a fav...I live on the island and nothing really Jumps out... now if we do a restaurant thread ...thats a different story..

$5 all the beer you can drink from 5-10 on Fri and on Sat 8 - 12....Many many good time to be had there ...too bad it moved and eventually closed.... Remember the change from Rock Ridge to Blue Moose? Nobody said anything about the change in name just that you showed up the following Friday and there was a different name on the door. The key staff of Rock Ridge (not part of Blue Moose) had a spot for about a minute called the Buck Wild Bar on 23rd right by Wendy's and had the same $5 racket. They opened the weekend the Yanks won the Series in 96 and had a $1 all the draft you can drink special on Friday and Saturday. The Moose closed without any friggin notice. One Friday after work, I went down to meet up with a buddy of mine only to find the doors locked...walked back towards the 1 train and caught him on the street to tell him that the Moose is done. That SOB didn't believe me and insisted on walking down to see that the doors were actually locked.

Geez, Louise...I dont remember a locale on 23rd not named Sci-Bar or Bar X. I remember when Blue Moose moved to Bleecker Street, which caused a whirlwind of trouble with the neighbors there.
Sigh. I remember the day it closed too. I also had gone down there for some cheap brews and a night of lunacy. And the doors were padlocked, the place was a veritable crypt. I went back a couple of days later with one of my running buddies, and we lit a couple of candles and sat vigil for a couple of hours until the fuzz came by and told us to go an and git.

I was there the night the bouncer got shot...I don't think they ever caught the guy.... I stayed home that night for some strange reason. Tom & I spoke the next day and he told me about it.

I was talking to someone upstairs when it happened, which was odd in itself as I rarely ventured upstairs. I kind of got shoved to the ground and got ticked about it, not realizing I was being shoved to clear out of there as something not cool was going on. Apparently the shooter ran right by us and down the stairs. I did not see anything...from reports later on neither did anyone else, sadly.

In Hoboken, the Caddillac bar was one of my faves before the building was torn down. In Manhattan, The (John) Wetlands was one of my faves before the building was torn down.
I live in Jersey City and my local faves are: P.J. Ryan's, Lucky 7's, White Star, and Iron Monkey's rooftop in the summer.
In Hoboken Scotland Yard is hands down my favorite bar.
I work in Manhattan near the flatiron building. Nothing too good around there. Places with good beer selections such as Blind Tiger or Peculier Pub are always my first choice. Puck Fair and Off The Wagon are fun to go to. "The Room" is a nice place. There are way too many choices to list depending whatever mood/dress I am in.
There are many times when I've walked out of a bar because they weren't showing the Yankees game on TV or refused to change the channel.

Two favorite watering holes torn down? That's some piss-poor luck! (Well, that and shoddy construction in the case of Cadillac Bar.)

Cadillac Bar was a shithole, but the problem was not the shoddy construction... it was the shady owner who took down some support walls downstairs while remodeling. There are reasons BESIDES the risk of indictments, to follow the building code rather than paying off the officials...

Exactly what I meant, but I didn't get into details.
You mean you weren't a regular at Boo-Boo's Psychadelic Lounge? ;D

I miss The Sci-Bar on 23rd. They had a big periodic table of the elements on the wall behind the bar. All it did was incite arguments, as drunks would be arguing about what abbreviation stood for what element. I was privvy to all kinds of goofy stuff that took hold in that bar, enough to do a blog. Must get on that.
It later changed to Bar X, and I still have a silly plastic mug at home with a big "X" on it, and the succinct slogan "Last Bar On Earth."
As for slogans, my favorite t-shirt of all time was my old Aces and Eights shirt, with SHUT UP AND DRINK on the back.

Aces and Eights was definitely an adventure. Or Aces and AIDS, as we called it when I was still at NYU.

They had metal dectectors from that night forward... Don't forget the folks that had to frisk you as well. Some nights women would be on duty to check the ladies and there was one chick that damn near tickled me.
