Might as well get a thread specifically going on the 2010 season.
Right now obviously, one of the big issues is who the 5th starter would be. We cover a lot of that in the Joba thread, but in reality, Joba isn't the only one in contention.
I think that the job IS his to lose, as it should be. He has the most upside and Hughes didn't throw enough innings to shelter the load of a starter.
However, while the job may be Joba's to lose, I think the first couple of starts have sucked ass. By now, the flu excuse shouldn't matter.
So when he starts next time, he needs to do better.
Likewise, Hughes may have outpitched Joba, but he hasn't exactly lit the world on fire either. He just outpitched someone who is pitching like shit.
But that said, if things don't change, don't be surprised to see Aceves, Gaudin or Mitre steal the job.
Aceves has been pitching great.
I don't think Joba should pitch in the pen this year at all. MAYBE in October if he truly doesn't deserve an October start. But other than that, the guy needs to start. If he is not good enough to win the 5th job, then he should go to Scranton until he is.
As for Hughes, they need to decide this spring what they want him to be--a starter or a reliever. If it's a reliever, then put him in the pen. If it's a starter, and he is outpitched by Aceves/Gaudin/Mitre, then HE should go to the minors too and stretch out the arm for a season.
Bring him up for the pen as he nears his innings limits.
