Since this section is for memories, and as time goes on, this will be a memory, I might as well document the humor involving the perfect game that wasn't last night.
June 2, 2010.
So the Yankees are merrily trouncing the Orioles, as they should, when Steve publicly announces that Galaraga is pitching a perfect game in Detroit against the Indians.
24 outs, with Detroit up in the bottom of the 8th.
Boldly, Steve states "I WILL BET ANYONE 5 BUCKS THAT HE BLOWS IT."
This was right out of Caddyshack when Rodney Dangerfield bet Ted Knight $1000 he blows a 2 foot put.
The crowd was already in a good mood because the game was going well, and several people jumped at the bet. Steve was going to stop at 4 people, but decided to accommodate 5 takers.
With today's technology, we have plenty of people with cellphones updating.
Personally, I didn't like that. We needed a personal touch. So I texted Tom Brown, who has the MLB package, and I knew would be watching live.
A live texting play by play was exactly what this needed.
Domi announced that Austin Jackson was pulled for defensive purposes.
Domi was wrong.
Here is the texting conversation between Tom and me:
Me: We got a perfect game in the 8th. Cleveland v. Detroit. Detroit's pitcher, 24 up, 24 down. Can you put on MLB network and update out by out?
Tom: Yes
Tom: I'm watchin
Tom: Keep you posted. Commercials.
Me: Good. You will be the best update. We in the 9th?
Tom: Yup. Here we go.
Tom: WOW! One out.
Tom: Austin Jackson nice catch!
Me: Domi says Jackson subbed for defensive reasons.
Tom: Wrong
Tom: Jackson made catch on track
Tom: Redmond G6. 2 out
Tom: Jason Donald up
Me: Faster. You got scooped (because someone was announcing through the phone).
Tom: Strike 1
Tom: Ball
Tom: Doh!
Me: Well?
Tom: Bang bang play at first - safe!
Tom: 3-1 groundout
Tom: Ump blew the call!!!
Me: Steve won $25
Me: How bad was the call?
Tom: One of the worst
Tom: Watchin mlb net - ump WRONG
Tom: He touched base, had ball
Me: Are the announcers ripping it?
Tom: Hell yeah
At this point, Steve is on cloud 9. People are laughing their asses off because not only did this guy blow the perfect game, he was ripped off.
Within half an hour, still photos and even a video replay were being shown on people's cell phones as Steve laughed all the way to the bank.
INSTANT BLEACHER CLASSIC.
