Oh, I had been meaning to mention this after I read it yesterday.
Small cover story in the USA TODAY about how the military are using pigs to test body armor. Dressing them up in the stuff, then tossing them in humvees and the like, or I guess making them trip mines, and blowing them up. As they are wearing body armor, many are living "for a day or two" afterwards, some are dying flat-out.
Reason for this is not only some quick bacon strips, but a way to test "brain injuries" in relation to the newfangled helmets and such for the soldiers. Pigs seemingly have brains that resemble ours, even if we dont like to roll around in mud all the live-long day.
Of couse some animal rights folks are up in arms. I find the situation minorly amusing, the idea of dressing up a pig as a soldier and blowing off a bomb. As the story says, anything to keep the soldiers safe. The number of pigs having been used for this is around 200 or so.

I had a female chemistry prof who said every time she sees a picture of a cute little kitten with it's skull opened up like a nicely sliced grapefruit and electrodes hooked to it's brain.....she sees PROGRESS.
I agree. I would whole-heartedly support purchasing my pork from a butcher who used nothing but military tested swine!

NEW YORK -- The Coast Guard says there's a whale in New York Harbor. It's believed to be the same one spotted near a Queens beach on Wednesday.
A Coast Guard spokeswoman, Petty Officer 3rd Class Annie Berlin, says the whale was discovered Thursday morning in a shipping channel near the Verrazano Bridge. It's about 20 feet long.
The Coast Guard has set up a safety zone to protect it from boats - and vice versa.
The whale had disappeared from view Wednesday after it nearly beached itself in the Rockaways. it's just one of those days...

That sort of thing seems to happen more often than it should. I think someone is letting them loose in the harbor as a prank.

How exactly does one hold/contain a whale in the first place in order to take it to a purposeful location and "let it loose."

And therein lies the beauty of the thing.

PETA wants no part of chicken dance fete
PETA is taking on what it considers a new affront to animals - NASCAR fans doing the chicken dance. People for Ethical Treatment of Animals has asked Guiness Book of World Records Inc to ignore an attempt to set a record for the largest group (125,000 fans) chicken dance at the Talledega Superspeedway, site of the Aarons 499 Race on Sunday. The reason? KFC is the sponsor of the attempt, and the group says the fast-food company is mean to chickens. "If this record is allowed, it could encourage other animal abusers to attempt silly feats or lewd acts that make a mockery of animal protection" said Tracy Reiman, executive VO of PETA.

I fucking hate assholes from Peta, that is the most insane thing I have ever heard. Doing the chicken dance is encouraging people to be mean to animals because a fast food chain is a sponsor? I want to pour oil down a sea lions throat and email it to that fucking twat of a bitch.

Eh....this is like, one of the dumbest things ever.
Pennsylvania Men Attempting Record Send 217,000 Text Messages, Get $26G Bill
Wednesday, April 22, 2009
PHILADELPHIA — Their thumbs sure must be sore.
Two central Pennsylvania friends spent most of March in a text-messaging record attempt, exchanging a thumbs-flying total of 217,000.
For one of the two, that meant an inches-thick itemized bill for $26,000.
Nick Andes, 29, and Doug Klinger, 30, were relying on their unlimited text messaging plans to get them through the escapade, so Andes didn't expect such a big bill.
"It came in a box that cost $27.55 to send to me," he said Tuesday. He said he "panicked" and called T-Mobile, which told The Associated Press it had credited his account and was investigating the charges.
The two Lancaster-area residents have been practically nonstop texters for about a decade since they attended Berks Technical Institute together.

Andes and Klinger were able to set up their phones to send multiple messages. During a February test run they found they could send 6,000 or 7,000 messages on some days, prompting the March messaging marathon.
"Most were either short phrases or one word, 'LOL' or 'Hello,' things like that, with tons and tons of repeats," said Andes, reached by phone.
Andes sent more than 140,000 messages, and Klinger sent more than 70,000 to end the month with a total of just over 217,000, he said.
A spokesman for Guinness World Records didn't immediately return messages asking whether it would be certified as a record.
April came as a relief to Andes' wife, Julie, who had found his phone tied up with texting when she tried to call him on lunch breaks.
"She was tired of it the first few days into it," Andes said.

Olbermann joins MLBAM roster - MSNBC host will write columns, maintain blog on MLB.com
The latest addition to the MLB Advanced Media roster needs little in the way of an introduction.
Most Americans know Keith Olbermann for his political work, but the award-winning journalist always has been a self-described "baseball nerd." Now he'll be writing about the sport he loves as an at-large columnist for MLBAM.
"I've long respected MLB.com's editorial independence and I'll be delighted to test it," Olbermann said.
His appropriately named Baseball Nerd MLBlog launched last month, and he is currently blogging three times a week. He has blogged about the debuts of both New York ballparks, including photos from his visits, and his column today took a look at a wild night of action Tuesday.
Olbermann asked that his full salary for his MLBAM work be split equally among three charitable organizations: the Baseball Assistance Team, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital and the Jayden Braden/Ariana Marzano College Fund, established in support of the late John Marzano's grandchildren. Marzano, a former Major Leaguer and MLB.com host, died a little more than one year ago in a home accident in Philadelphia.
"Seriously, it's an honor to be able to write about all the obscure things I love inside the game I love, and to help some worthy causes in the process, and to honor an old friend," he said. "Not to mention that it will be my politics-free oasis. Unless another cat jumps up at another Governor."
The host of MSNBC's "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" got his broadcasting start in sports journalism with CNN and ESPN. After leaving ESPN, Olbermann became a sports anchor and producer for Fox Sports Net from 1998 to 2001, during which he hosted several World Series broadcasts. The past two NFL seasons, Olbermann has served as co-host of NBC's "Football Night in America."
Olbermann becomes the first national journalist to join the digital newspaper initiative that MLBAM has scheduled to launch in May.
Dinn Mann, Executive Vice President of Content for MLBAM, spoke highly of Olbermann, saying, "Keith is not just a student of the game, he is an unmistakable personality who combines punch line instincts with journalistic drive. This is an exciting step in the landscape of sports commentary and MLBAM."
Given the nature of his political commentary and the highly charged emotions of that crowd, Olbermann offered this advice for any fans eager to flame him on the comments of his MLBAM content: "I don't care."
On April 14, Olbermann was a guest on MSNBC colleague Rachel Maddow's show and they talked at length about Olbermann's MLBlog and his baseball views, from the Cubs' alleged curse of the Billy Goat (which he suspects is "made up") to the intricacies of the balk. "I have just one more question," Maddow said at the end of the chat, "can we do this all the time?"
Baseball fans who follow Olbermann's commentary here will be able to relate.
Screw you Harold Reynolds! We got Olbermann!

Man pretending to fall off bridge actually falls off bridge BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Police said a 23-year-old man is in stable condition after he pretended that he was falling off a bridge over the Minnesota River, then actually fell off the bridge. Police got a call just before 5 a.m. Sunday from a 21-year-old man who said his friend fell off the Highway 77 bridge and into a marshy area about 30 feet below.
The caller said he was driving north when his friend, who he said had been drinking, told him to pull into the bridge's emergency lane so he could urinate.
The 23-year-old stood eventually climbed to the ledge of the bridge, then looked at his friend and pretended to fall. "He then in fact fell," reads a press release from the Bloomington Police Department.
Police from Bloomington and Eagan responded, and the Eagan Fire Department used a chair lift to retrieve the man. He was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center where was treated.

WATERFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Tinker Bell has been reunited with her owners after a 70-mph gust of wind picked up the six-pound Chihuahua and tossed her out of sight. Dorothy and Lavern Utley credit a pet psychic for guiding them on Monday to a wooded area nearly a mile from where 8-month-old Tinker Bell had been last seen. The brown long-haired dog was dirty and hungry but otherwise OK. The Utleys, of Rochester, had set up an outdoor display Saturday at a flea market in Waterford Township, 25 miles northwest of Detroit. Tinker Bell was standing on their platform trailer when she was swept away. Dorothy Utley tells The Detroit News that her cherished pet "just went wild" upon seeing her.
