Strong rumors of a trade for Cliff Lee. Montero the key man.
Normally, I don't like getting rid of guys like Montero. Can't miss, at a hard position.
But Lee isn't exactly David Justice. He's a bona fide ace. A lefty. Strong Cy Young candidate.
To get a guy like that is WORTH your best prospect.
Plus, Montero's piss poor defensive projection, combined with the Yankees' minor league strength at the catching position make Montero expendable.

And you know what's funny. His first pitch in a Yankee uniform will come at the All-Star game. I welcome the trade too just like you mentioned. We are deep with catchers in the minors.

The deal's not done yet. So I won't act as if it is until everything is official.

Well, that was something. For most of the day Friday it was "done."
Anyway, couple of thoughts. Montero is very expendable at this time. He wont catch here, I saw that in a bunch of places again the last few days. He's a mess back there. We dont need a 1B either. And the thought is he would make a "sloppy outfielder."
He is scuffling a bit at AAA, and the time to spin him is now. If he continues oo struggle a bit, his value will drop. Yankee catching depth is tremendous. To me the peach is Austin Romine. But there is so much younger talent down there.
I would not have minded this one as much cause it would have been good "baseball business." Using chips to make a move. When the Yankees sign Lee at the end of the year for $180 million, I will end up grumpy.
Cliff Lee, aside from being a top 3 mound talent in the game, is one of my favorites in the game. I would have enjoyed seeing him come over here.

Tom, I agree that now is the time to make a move with Montero, for the reasons you stated, but I hope they don't do it just to do it, for someone like Ted Lilly (Laura, calm down) or Kerry Wood.
