So Cashman is laying the groundwork for the inevitable move of Jeter away from SS.
What I want to know is, why are people so sure he would go to CF?
I figure by the time this happens, and it won't be this year, I don't see him losing all his speed. But the CF is the general of the OF, and I think that requires experience. Plus, I have no clue what kind of an OF arm he'd have.
If anything, he should go to left and let Gardner handle CF.

Cashman said CF as his bat isn't good enough for the corner outfield. FanGraphs did an interesting analysis on this a few months ago. They concluded that although Jeter's defense is subpar at SS, his bat is above average for the position. Assuming he was an average to above average corner outfielder (perhaps a big assumption) his bat would be far below average. The net result being that he offers the Yankees more value at SS, at least for now. If his bat continues to slow and his defense worsens, this analysis may change.

One thing--does it really matter what position you play when it comes to the bat? A corner OF producing traditional SS type numbers doesn't mean much if you have a SS producing corner OF numbers. As long as the team as a whole has a good lineup, and you can produce both with the bat and in the field, it doesn't matter.

Heard an interesting thought on a podcast today.
As (IF?) Jeter limps toward the end of his contract, and as Jose Reyes continues to play well (probably playing his way out of the Mets' affordability range), could the Yankees look at picking up Reyes in free-agency?

Since when is overpaying a Yankees concern?

It's not about overpaying. It's about producing. Reyes is injury prone in his 20s, with a cocky attitude. This is not the kind of player the Yankees should entertain. All Reyes would be is a big check.
