Well, a few days have passed, and the passing of Pete Steele (Type O Negative / Carnivore) never made the board. I was remiss, I should have run his pics on the top.
A longtime Type O fan here. So many memories of the band, seeing them live. They are the band that got me to mix gothic to my doom - I had been a doom fan, and Type O took it in a different direction. Their first release, which I am listening to now, was quicker and had a Carnivore sort of vibe. But Bloody Kisses...wow, what a gem. Around that time the friggin' band got themselves into Nassau Coliseum, opening up for some band or another!
Steele was always self-depracating, interrupting his concerts to insult the crowd for spending money on such a crappy band. He had a rep as a savage dry wit, and some of his interviews I had read over the years are some of the funniest things I had seen put to print.
He once posed in Playboy, and was quite endowed...I am proud to say I did not even peek, but my girlfriend at the time was quite enamored and would not stop talking about it.
Way too young. 48. Ill miss him, and Im glad he left so much music behind. I wish there was more to come.

I was pleasantly surpised to see that I still had the Bob Costas sit-down with Harwell on my upstairs DVR. Have not seen it yet, recorded it a couple of months ago. When Harwell passed - bless his soul - I was hoping for a replay not realizing I had it already. But the best MLB.NET could do is "we will be replaying the Harwell interview after the game we are showing this afternoon!" Gee, thanks!
They show Prime 9 six times a day, yet cant highlight this interview?

They did replay it the other night. I watched...albeit probably about 1 or 2 am your time.

Its kinda sad that the way Im going to run a tribue to Lena Horne is to watch an episode of The Muppet Show we own, with her guest-hosting.

Well, to follow up on Cho's post, another 91 year old has left us. Jazz pianist Hank Jones died here in NY after a "brief illness." He was the guy who accompanied Marilyn Monroe on the keys when she did her famous "Happy Birthday" to JFK. He was on the jazz circuit for 70 years, playing with greats like Lester Young, Charlie Parker, and John Coltrane. He was also the pianist for Ella Fitzgerald.

Eh, the man has an entire thread devoted to him in the Entertainment section. And the header of that section was on top of this main section for about 4 days.
Dio deserved a thread of his own, not to be tossed in the middle of an elongated thread such as this. I even wrote what i thought was a heartfelt tribute, with my own thoughts.

RIP to the 87 year old ex-wwii vet who was killed in, of all things, one of those "ride-alongs" at a NASCAR Speedway. The guy picked the ride-along as a reward for giving blood, and had been very excited about it.
Well, on the trip around Texas Motor Speedway, a tire blew and they hit the wall, and the old man was killed by blunt force trauma.
May he rest easy!

Well, avert next year's tragedy and pick Betty White for '11. Estelle went in '08, Bea Arthur in '09, Rue in 10, so... the writing is on the wall man.

I have Betty White. I should have gone with Rue though, she'd been having health issues for a long time. I'm not sure she was even able to speak much at the time of this deadening stroke.

Former NBA Player Manute Bol Dies at 47[/b] Former NBA Player Manute Bol Dies at 47 KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Manute Bol, a lithe 7-foot-7 shot-blocker from Sudan who spent 10 seasons in the NBA and was dedicated to humanitarian work in Africa, died Saturday. He was 47.
Bol died at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, where he was being treated for severe kidney trouble and a painful skin condition, Tom Prichard, executive director of the group Sudan Sunrise, said in an e-mail.
"Sudan and the world have lost a hero and an example for all of us," Prichard said. "Manute, we'll miss you. Our prayers and best wishes go out to all his family, and all who mourn his loss."
Bol played in the NBA with Washington, Golden State, Philadelphia and Miami, averaging 2.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.3 blocks for his career. He led the league in blocks in 1985-86 with Washington (5.0 per game) and in 1988-89 with Golden State (4.3 a game).
"Manute's impact on this city, our franchise and the game of basketball cannot be put into words," 76ers president and general manager Ed Stefanski said in a statement. "He ... was continually giving of himself through his generosity and humanitarian efforts in order to make the world around him a much better place, for which he will always be remembered."
Bol joined the NBA with Washington in 1985 and played three seasons there. He returned to the team briefly toward the end of his career. The Wizards lauded him as a "true humanitarian and an ambassador for the sport of basketball."
"Despite his accomplishments on the court, his lasting legacy will be the tireless work and causes he promoted in his native Sudan and the cities in which he played," the club said in a statement.
After the NBA, Bol worked closely as an advisory board member of Sudan Sunrise, which promotes reconciliation in Sudan. .
Bol was hospitalized in mid-May during a stopover in Washington after returning to the United States from Sudan. Prichard said then that Bol was in Sudan to help build a school in conjunction with Sudan Sunrise but stayed longer than anticipated after the president of southern Sudan asked him to make election appearances and use his influence to counter corruption in the county.
He said Bol had undergone three dialysis treatments and developed Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, a condition that caused him to lose patches of skin. Prichard said the skin around Bol's mouth was so sore he went 11 days without eating and could barely talk.
Prichard said it's believed Bol contracted the skin disease as a reaction to kidney medication he took while in Africa.
Janis Ricker, operations manager of Sudan Sunrise, said Saturday the organization will continue its work building the school in Bol's home village in southern Sudan. She said Bol's goal was to build 41 schools throughout Sudan.
