It's a little known fact that Section 39 houses not one, but at least TWO professional DJs.
We all know one is DJ Dever, who rocks the house all over the five bouroughs. In addition to the bleacher Halloween parties, Dever has brought his stylings to small venues like Randall's Island.
And the other DJ is DJ VES, otherwise known as Ignorant Evan. Newer to the party scene, DJ VES has lent his stylings to venues such as Union Bar.
So at POS Dan's birthday, Evan was there, and the conversation turned to the inevitable--
WHO IS THE BETTER DJ? DJ VES or DJ DEVER?
I posed the question to Evan, and he basically said that "all Dever does is throw some Dr. Dre on his IPOD."
Strong words.
I am not well versed in how this is decided, but there is indeed such a thing as a DJ Battle.
And Evan IS willing to battle the Dever for the to find out which DJ has supremacy.
Upon hearing the news, the reaction throughout the bleachers has been overwhelmingly positive.
Some of the texts I received:
Rocky-- Where and when?
Walkman John-- Make it happen
Violet A-- Nice-- Name the time and place and I'll be there.
Sheriff Tom-- Tell him [Evan] to place a challenge
Shane-- We should make that happen. I would pay to see it.
Those are just the text messages. The news of such a battle was the talk of the evening.
Dever was not there to speak for himself. But Gooner Keith served as his advocate and did a fine job. It was Keith that really explained Dever's resume and stature.
From what it sounds like, Dever is the Mike Tyson (young) of the DJ world. He would go into this battle as a heavy favorite, and it would be a no contest KO.
Evan was explaining that there are several types of battles. I think they should engage in all of them.
I don't know how such a battle can be settled, but the particulars can be worked out later.
If Dever is Mike Tyson, will Evan be Buster Douglas? Or will he be Robin Givens?
To find out the answer to these and other questions, we need to first learn the answer to the most important question:
Will DJ Dever accept the challenge of DJ VES?
Let's find out...
Discuss.

I'm not one to buy into challenges made by someone else, to someone else representing someone else. If Evan wants to make a challenge, let him do it. He has a login here, until I hear from EVAN i will refrain from posting in regards to this. Till then, have fun!

Plenty of witnesses were there to confirm Evan's challenge.
Even Evan doesn't know what VES stands for. His thought was "very Evan Solomon."
It could stand for anything.

Sorry, but without the parties speaking for themselves, there is no juice to this.
Let me know when one of the supposed "challengers" speaks for themselves. Thanks!

Unless Evan is a trance DJ, the battle makes no sense.
And even if he is, we're talking about The Dever here.

My boy DJ SAD used to blow shit up. He retired due to a neck injury.

I loved how DJ Sad used to tell the Kurds he'd spin what they want, but he was just gassin' them up.
Also: This may be the gayest thing ever.

And as Evan skates toward the goal with his head down, DJ Dever gives him a vicious shoulder block:
You wanna see me spin, Wed nite I will be playing real records in front of 2,000 people, believe me, I wouldnt stoop to a level for some guy I have no credibility for. I mean, just last year he was asking me where to buy tables and records. Now he wants to battle me?
Sure, I play for $500 an hour, get that up then we can talk.
But that aside, when you have 15+ years in the dj game like I do, then we'll battle. Till then, its just a waste of my time, and time is money, pay $40 if you want to see me play Wed nite, swalla back.
Spare me with the gimmicks, ok, I play real parties for real money, not some flunkie bar dj. Kid, let me give you my jock you def cannt come close to holding it. I helped build many difference scenes, all type of music, you should show me a little more respect than that to even think I would lower myself to you pitty patty level.
Sorry Balls.

Actually, I think it played out magnificently. This isn't MY thing. This is what the people wanted, and I'm a man of the people. The people wanted to see this battle.
Incidentally, Uptown said he'd smoke both of them.

Before I get roped into this by BALLS, I'd like to let it be known that I did not recommend this challenge. He came to me asking about it like I was DEVER's agent or something and I merely responded that he was the real deal, has packed thousands into venues, and that such a challenge would be a gross mismatch and a humiliation if you will.
I also said that both parties would need to agree on such a battle and that I would not be responsible for suggesting it.

I told Balls the same thing. I did not want this challenge up here, with Evan a member that does not post, and The Dever not interested in showing up here.
Balls, sometimes you need to listen to what others are telling you.

No one is saying you were suggesting anything Keith. Everything in your post is 100 percent true. You did indeed vouch for The Dever as the real deal, and certainly did say that it would be a mismatch. The only thing you suggested was that the Dever is really good at what he does.
Dever has quashed it, and the people are left disappointed.

That's a good point. Why would it be brought up here, when neither guy wants much of anything to do with this board? To me it smacks of some unnecessary desperation.
This is something that traditionally would trigger a suspension handed down by Tom.

We're not big on suspensions here. Plus I let Balls roam a bit, being half the admin staff here.
But it was a bizarre lapse in judgement and it makes him, and even me and this boad, look bad. Not sure of what he was looking to do here.

Evan asked that the challenge be posted, and as a servant of the people, I did what was asked. The people wanted this. The people have been denied their request. I was doing my duty and I am proud to be an American.

OK, now that we've established that I had nothing to do with THEDEVER possibly entering a battle with a guy that should be known as 'DJ TRAINWRECK' and not DJ Ves, (yes, I have the mixtapes to prove it), this would be a total disaster.
While I think Evan's record selections are interesting and he has some good ideas, he needs to log a few more hours behind the decks, REAL decks, not a CD mixer that does the math for you. Fot those of you that do not know the story of how I know THEDEVER, listen up....chaps..
Between 1994 and 98, I was pretty active in the east coast rave activity. First in NY and then when I went off to college in Delaware, where I spent alot of time in Phila, Baltimore and DC with the people down there. The Brooklyn Zoo/Uptown Underground, to my knowledge started throwing huge parties in about 1995 or 1996, lead by several characters....THE DEVER being one of them, and another one being Rob Devs, who you all know as Bobby Steelz from going to the bleachers and conversing with on the 39 board. Now when I say huge parties, I don't mean 300 Pakistani's rammed into Union bar between the hours of 10 and 2. I mean five thousand punters piling into Roseland and Randalls Island between the hours of 11pm and 10 am the next day, me being one of them. It was madness. I later met THE DEVER by his real name in about 1999 at Nevada Smiths, not knowing he was who he was and proceeded to become friends with him...and then one day it all sort of came out that he was THEDEVER and it had all been linked.

Evan asked that the challenge be posted
S O TELL HIM NO!
I told you that he should have done so himself. Now its YOU that comes out with egg on the face, not him. He is a member of this board who chooses not to post. He could have come on to do that one dumb thing. Well, not that The Dever would see it - he does not post here either!
To be blunt, part of me is wondering if he ever made this challenge at all, and you are just screwing around.

Evan asked for it to be posted.
Translation: "I don't think your board is worth a shit, so I can't be bothered with gracing it with my presence. However, can you post something on it for me and do my bidding? Thanks."

There are many witnesses. I would never play games with the will of the people.
And that's a hell of a resume for the Dever. I have no idea how to judge if a DJ is good, bad, or something in between. Not sure where the skill is outside of song selection, but I'm sure it's far more than that.
