I mean seriously...how crazy is that? He was ALL OVER local NY media yesterday for his alleged comments in which he threw Torre under the bus...and he just had a heated interview with Mike And The Mad Dog yesterday. Not that any of that is important considering today's situation...but it's just ironic that Yankeeland was despising the guy less than 24 hours ago for his controversial comments.

I learned about this story listening to Michael Kay. The reporter on the CNN video feed is Randy Kaye. Coincidence? I think not.

This is sad and all, but I find it funny Tom called Lidle a dope without knowing it was Lidle. That's fucked up though, really sad. Someones going to spray paint Lidles glove white now.

I wonder why it is that baseball teams go out of their way to put language in player contracts prohibiting playing pick-up basketball, riding motorcycles, participating in "extreme sports", etc.... but don't prohibit players from owning and operating their own airplanes. That's two Yankees, who have died from being inexperienced pilots.

To put it bluntly, its more likely a player will injure himself and deprive a team of his services playing basketball or riding a motorcycle than crashing a plane. I am no advocate of flying, but many will tell you its safer than driving your car on the highway. I really dont think teams worry too much about players flying, especially as its quite a while till you can get to where you are flying without someone experienced at your side. Of course, and tragically so, it did not help Thurman or Cory Lidle.
Yeah, two Yankees have now died as inexperienced pilots....but how many other players have? In any sport? The number of guys who have torn a muscle or fallen off of a motorcycle is much, much larger.
Also, in todays high-tech world, athletes flying from town to town to save themselves time is getting common. I dont see it changing, nor do I believe it should.

Those experts never bring up that when you crash your car, it's possible to walk away. Teams SHOULD worry about this. It's an unnecessary risk.
How many players are the PILOT of the planes they fly? And what percentage of THOSE players die? It's a stupid risk.

Balls, lots of players fly. I read something earlier this year that 7 different guys on one NFL team had pilot licenses.

And they are all idiots. Anyone who flies in a plane like that is taking an unnecessary risk. I'd be curious as to how many MLB players fly. It really should be in their contracts. I guess they don't do it because if they die, they don't have to pay them anyway.

Thw white glove thing was something I heard on O%A, like some roadside memorials for people who got hit by cars get spraypainted white. I said the glove because you would need a lot of spray paint to get the whole building.
It's one way to revamp our pitching though.

James, enough with the snide remarks.
Balls, get with the times. Lots of people fly. John Travolta is a licensed pilot. So is Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson. Both "Georgeous" Jimmy and "Rugged" Ronnie Garvin. Its really not all that dangerous if you are trained properly.

Which obviously Lidle wasn't, look at him now. I forgot his name but that golfer died too, Payne Stewart I think? I actaully agree with MSB, it's a stupid risk they shouldn't take. The fact he circled around the statue of liberty shows he was fucking sight seeing and was with a instructor pilot shows he didn't know what he was doing, should not be flying. Fuck he was only with the yankees a few months, if that. This happens to atheets all the time, and it's some big deal. These guys are assholes.

Payne Stewart was a poor comparison. He was a passenger on a Learjet that lost cabin pressure, suffocating all on board from a lack of oxygen.
Piloting a small plane is not that difficult with the proper training. Even children do it (Don Mattingly's 14 year old son flies).
I heard on ESPN that Lidle reported fuel problems a minute after takeoff. The fact that he circled the statue of liberty after reporting the problem means he figured it wasnt that big an issue.
My thoughts go out to his wife and son.

I heard a report that Lidle just went for training last offseason and had his license before the season even started

Tom, you could list a BUNCH of famous people that fly, and all you would be doing is providing a list of morons. Teams that don't worry about it are not learning from what happened with Munson. It's a shame that his accident had to be carbon copied. This one is worse because more people died.

so therefore no one should ever learn to fly, because they might crash..... john revolting never crashed, hell, he's got like a 707 or something like that.

How about not taking unnecessary risks in the prime of your life? Small planes are not safe. And it only takes one crash and that's that. John Denver, JFK Jr, Thurman Munson, Cory Lidle. That pilot license and plane was money well spent.

Wow, you just named all of 3 people that have died. There are literally thousands of private pilots who havent. Lets ban all athletes from driving cars too. The list of athletes who have died in car accidents is much larger than plane accidents.

Despite your claims, not every Tom, Dick and Harry has a pilot license. You can walk away from a car accident. It is also far less risky driving a car than flying in a small plane with an inexperienced pilot.

Balls you can't go as far to say it's not a loss, the people listed do have famillies that are losing him. I agree with you some people are stupid, that's why my sensitivity switch was turned off on this one, but someone did lose him, just not you.
There are things that can be classified as freak accidents, and others that get thrown in there as stupidity. This goes in file b. Plus by next week, it will be chipmunks waterskiing on a remote control boat. People thought this was terrorist at first, then switched cause it's a yankee pitcher. And then in a week, the next time he gets mentioned publiclly will be on opening day next year, and when they name off the list of people who died in bewteen old timers games. It's similar to Munson but no way does ijt impact the yankees moe than Munson did.He was the capitan. I't'd be different if it was Jeter, or mo or Bernie. But then agan, they aren't as stupid as Lidle was.
As soon as I got 20 fucking phone calls telling me the news, and 4 different of my myspace friends posting bulleitins, holy shit was it a pope or ex president co piloting the plane or something?

Its unfair to suggest stupidity, when all signs point to mechanical failure. If you think he is stupid just for flying a plane....well, I think YOU are stupid. This is the 21st century. As the years go by, and these folks make even more money, flying planes will be more likely every day for these guys.

But the thing is, he was lost due to his own fault. It doesn't matter if it was a mechanical failure. And if you think getting into a small plane like that isn't stupid, then YOU are stupid. And if you are right and individual planes become more common, then you will see more deaths.
It's kind of like Americans that get taken hostage in the middle east but aren't military. Why the hell are you even there? You're an idiot for going. Lidle put himself in that situation. He could have flown commercial. But he had to fly himself.
The biggest tragedy are the people that he took with him. Not to mention the damage he caused. And of course, his family, who didn't deserve this.
Like James said, Lidle deserves a mention on Old Timer's Day in the lost baseball people. Maybe a black armband simply because he WAS on the team.

Dude, it's a personal plane, a means of transportation. Comparing it to a civilian in Iraq is beyond the scope of stupid that it's stunned me.
