As I mentioned before on here, I would not rank him ahead of Mariano Rivera, but he is the ONLY guy I would put even in Mo's class.
Hoffman is as steady as they come, but he has a bit more of a propensity than Mo to cough one up, or be tagged with the L. And, of course, Mariano's postseason magic is just insane. But Hoffman is something very special.
Good for him.

Not much can be added to what Tom said. Second best closer of his era.

Even though I've always thought Hoffman was overrated ... ( I should clarify - when I say overrated in regards to Hoffman, I don't mean to imply that he's a mediocre pitcher falsely elevated to greatness....it's more like a great pitcher falsely elevated to God-like status) ... when posting the numbers on saves on the old board, I was rather impressed with the time it took Hoffy to reach 400 saves. It wasn't all that much longer than it took Mo, and I hadn't expected that.

And thats our point. Most people dont take the time to look at, and appreciate, Hoffman. His numbers do not lie, and if you were lucky enough to see him at work a lot, you realize you are watching someone special at his craft. www.baseball-reference.com/h/hoffmtr01.shtml

Trevor Hoffman was presented with a Gibson electric guitar signed by AC/DC's Angus Young before the Padres' game with the Cards yesterday. Hoffman, baseball's all-time saves leader, has entered games while the band's "Hells Bells" played since July 25, 1998.

especially doing it for a team that hasn't been great for all those years.

I've attended a few Padre games in the past two years. One thing I've noticed is that they've stopped the Hells Bells intro for non-save situations.
I witnessed the Hells Bells intro first hand in the 98 Series...it was pretty intimidating as a fan of the Yankees....fortunately they lit Hoffy up like a Christmas Tree.
Not that it means anything in the outcome of the game, but it's my understanding that Mo gets the Enter Sandman intro regardless of the situation...Yes / No???

Yeah, they always play it, no matter what the situation is.

I dont see any problem with the Yankees playing it any time Mo comes in, or the Padres for Hoffman. Its their entrance music, as it were. Maybe its the professional wrestling fan in me.
The song, around the Stadiums, is identified with the person who comes out to it. I dont see the issue here.

I'm not saying there's an issue with Mo getting in played for his entrance in ANY situation. Nor do I think there's an issue with Hoffy getting it only for save situations. I was just making an observation. After my experience in 98, I was really hyping up the whole Hells Bells/Hoffy entrance experience to my girlfriend during a regular season game we saw last year, and when Hoffman finally came in, he just jogged on in to no music, no fanfare, nothing much at all. I was a little disappointed that my girlfriend didn't get the experience - she had already experienced Mo's entrance in Yankee stadium and plenty of Gagne entrances at Dodger Stadium - but I assured her that neither of those compared to the artificial drama they create for Hoffman with the sheer volume of the music and the rabid fan response...but we didn't get to see it. I asked someone next to me who seemed to be a fairly devout Padre fan, and he told me that they only play Hells Bells in save situations. (Frankly I was shocked to know that a Padre fan knows what a "save situation" is ... hahahaha)
By the way, Tom, when it comes to this, I am not one of those bitter baseball traditionalists. I love the intro themes. I was especially a big fan of Paul O'Neill's "Baba O'Reilly" entrance, which Yankee Stadium has since seemed to adopt as ambient background noise during the games.

I still think of O'Neill EVERY time I hear Baba O'Reilly.

Me too. In fact, playing a Who compilation today, and that whole thing came up again for me.
One more note on the Hoffman thing, I understand the reasoning behind NOT playing the song in a non-save situation as much as I would understand a team playing the song after all. Its an intimidating song, building suspense...they probably just dont want to shoot their wad in a non-save scenario. This whole chat is much ado about nothin.

There is a reason why, on the rare occasion since Paulie's retirement, when some other player chose to come to the plate to Baba O'Reilly, the stadium errupts in a deafening "Paulie" chant.

Looks like the Dodgers are making a run at Hoffy.
Bad move.

For the short-term its a good, astute move.
Hoffman is proven, and solid. A division standard. Good on em.

Well, not only would I disagree with you, it appears the Dodgers themselves would as well.
Broxton is not going anywhere, he can set up for Hoffman, and ease back into the role. Hoffman is a Hall of Famer who still gets the job done. You get a chance to get him in this instance, you do it.

Adding Hoffman to any bull pin is a win, win. as he can help the kids along & close or set up. Even better for the Damn Dogers, as Hoff know's the west. Let him go to the land of old ball players West.... the Giants old age retread home Pack bell.

Yeah, it was the Brew Crew and the Dodgers all along. In fact, I heard the Brewers even before I heard the Dodgers. Aside from the fact that he would be leaving his comfy cozy decision, its a better team and option, I think he'd flourish there.
