Anyone here an alum of a school with a decent baseball team?
I am a Cal State Fullerton grad. This year I plan on following the team closely and attending home games.
Go Titans!
First game is 2/26 vs Hank Gathers alma mater Loyola Marymount.
EDIT: wait a second...technically, is Loyola Marymount still considered Hank Gathers' alma mater? He never graduated.

Uh oh, Walkman John is going to be grumpy. He hates college ball and the ping of the aluminum bat. Cho, neither of us are alum, but Dana is a big fan of Cal-State Fullerton. We've been watching college baseball together for a few years now.....I know, how romantic! I tape some games off the college sports channels. She also follows Cal-State alum into their pro careers. I do the same for my favorite college team, Texas!
Lets keep this thread going this year. College ball is fun.

Not so much college baseball in general, but yeah I called Tom out for his hyping up of the NCAA tournament and the shoddy baseball that takes place due to the *Ping*

I agree...and FOR ONCE it would be nice to have a local baseball team that I am actually a FAN of!!!!
My old man is a both a UCI alum (masters) and a Fullerton alum (teaching credential)...but I suspect he is an anteater at heart, and not a Titan...so we'll go at it this year. Well, he's also a Stonybrook alum, but who knows what they have out there in the way of baseball.
Don't the Yankees currently have a decent Fullerton player in their farm system? I seem to recall reading about a Titan being drafted in one of Tom's draft posts.

Not only am I unfamilar with Manhattan College's baseball program, I am highly dubious they elimiated the Huskers or any other team of value from the CWS.
Oh, and why is this thread here and not in Exta Innings, come to think of it?

Love St. Johns! Lived in Queens for some years as a kid and for longest time I always envisioned myself as a St. Johns basketball player (unfortunately later in life Geography and Talent got the best of me).
I know I still have it, and it must be buried in boxes of old crap, but somewhere from my youth I have a St. Johns REDMEN hoodie somewhere.
I think I was in love with St. John's until I read a Sports Illustrated article about Gary McClain sometime in the 80s, talking about doing cocaine in the White House and selling custom Wildcats basketball shoes for cocaine. Then I was in love with the idea of going to Villanova - imagine that, a story about drug abuse serving as a positive recruiting tool! HAHA! Anyway to this day Nova and St. John's are my two favorite college hoops teams, but this is a college baseball thread....sorry.
But I'd be pleased if St. John's did well in the CWS.

Just poked into my Baseball America College Baseball Preview issue today. Getting stoked. As many have heard, I have the college sports package, which allows me to get a fix of college baseball action. I am pleased.
I am also moving this to Batter Up, from Other Sports.

On my cable system for $4.95 more a month I have THREE 24 hour college sports channels, which are FOX Sports Affiliated. They run the gamut, and are regional offerings. Eastern based, Mid, and Western. Its nowhere near "all first run" - they will play a live game on a Friday night, and play it five times over the weekend.
At times there were 3 live college games going on at once when I had a hankering to watch college ball, and none included my Texas faves. So I would watch based on matchup, which roster had players I liked, all that. It was fun.

Last season when I went to Baltimore for the entire Angels homestand, Jered Weaver caught a glimpse of my LB hat and smiled when I said "Lets Go Dirtbags."

Watched a little college baseball action over the weekend, but crashed hard while doing so. So exhausted Saturday night I was out on the couch by the 3rd inning of the Florida State / Auburn tilt I had tuned in. The other college offering on the sports packages I have involved Oregon State, but that was yesterday and there was hockey and NASCAR to watch.
I have no interest in watching major league exhibition games this early in the year, I prefer some spirited college ball.

Again, its mainly a financial issue. Colleges can not afford an endless supply of wooden bats. Aluminum is more cost-efficient, does not need to be replaced as often, and there's your reason.

That is totally the reason.
Larry, not every college baseball program is funded well by the school, and not every school is funded by a multi-million dollar alumni. Colleges are adding and dropping college programs year to year, as to where the budget takes them, especially state schools.
Come on, you know damn well that college athletics are budgeted school to school. Aluminum bats adds an even playing field, all the way across the board, division to division.

Yeah, but try telling kids looking to go to college their tuition will be going up so the baseball team can get bats. Cause that is where the money for the increase will be recouped.
There is a lot of sentiment out there to "screw the ballteams" - college is for learning firstoff. Lots of people dont want to hear about funding the ballteams.

Yeah, but the college teams we are talking about are not really the go-to spot for inner city kids.
You will have many more people saying budget money for computers for the students than for baseball bats.
Its a silly argument we are having, your point is valid, but the reason for the bats being aluminum are quite simply - budget reasons. Aluminum bats keep longer.

i still think its retarded. how many bats could a team use a season? 200? 500? what do they cost each? $10? $20? what are we talking about here? a couple thousand dollars? i just dont really get it. but i guess ding is better then not having a team.

That's why the "boosters" hold so much power.

I didn't attend my planned trip to Goodwin Field to see my Titans this past Friday - I went to see Guttermouth play instead.
I will make the trip on the 20th against UNLV.

Wednesday afternoon I have the DVR ripping from 3-5PM, as they are replaying a special I missed over the weekend, "INNING BY INNING - PORTRAIT OF A COACH" all about current Texas Coach Augie Garrido and how he led different teams to the college World Series. Garrido has special meaning to a few of us, in terms of teams he hath helmed.
