I am sure, in time, there will be need for this thread. Mise as well start it now. By the way, anyone wish to join me at the Futures Game? This said, maybe its a really bad thing they are holding this at the venerable Yankee Stadium. To wit...this is all we need, some fag singing "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" during the 7th inning stretch.

Baby Ruth has absolutely nothing to do with Babe Ruth. I don't like this.

Willie Mays and Joe Girardi have been named All Star Game coaches.
Uhhhh, ya think? Total political move, that one.

Willie Randolph admitted he will openly be lobbying for a coaching spot in this game.

HA!!!! I just noticed that I said "Willie Mays" in the above post.
Just goes to show, there's only one Willie.

I'm surprised Torre wasn't given a coaching spot.

Why should he? He's new to his league. He would be taking the spot of a deserving National League manager.
What do you guys, want, to dredge up everyone who ever wore the uniform for this?

Calling Torre a new guy is ridiculous. He's the most successful active manager in baseball.

I don't think Torre should be an NL coach. But being that the game is in Yankee Stadium, it's Joe, it would be a whole lotta hoopla surrounding his so-called "homecoming"...I wouldn't put it past MLB to force it.

Torre chimes in, and quite frankly I agree with him. The spotlight should not be on him. Plus, in all due respect, I am sure the "hosts" dont want him around.
Basically Clint Hurdle was only allowed to name 2 coaches, and he earned that right. No reason for him to burn one on a guy that, quite frankly, he gives a crap about. As it was he handpicked Willie Randolph, who also has the Yankee connection, and as Hurdle said "is a better fit for our club."
I'm with a new team now," Torre said Friday night after his Los Angeles Dodgers were beaten 4-2 by the Los Angeles Angels. "[Yankees manager] Joe Girardi is a coach for the All-Star Game, and deservedly so. They usually take the local city's managers as coaches. Besides, I'm not sure that if I got a call, I would say yes. Going over there at this point in time, I may serve as more of a distraction than to go over there and help the manager win a ballgame."
"I mean, anything that happens at Yankee Stadium is a spectacle, and I'm sure that it's going to be a very special time there. But I have no emotional feelings about it at all."
"I mean, I spent so many days and games in that ballpark and so many special nights -- postseason," Torre said. "I mean, I've got a bucket full of memories. The All-Star Game certainly is going to be a spectacle, but I'm certainly satisfied with the time I put in there."

Cox currently has 2277 wins to Torre's 2090.
But Torre has 4 WS championships. Cox has 1.
LaRussa has 2402 wins. 2 World Championships.
Torre has 4, Cox & LaRussa together have 3.
Torre is the most successful manager of the bunch.

Holy Crap, Balls makes an appearance outside the Pinstripe Prattle thread? Ohh wait, we're in the All-Star Game At Yankee Stadium thread.
Too bad they don't give assists to managers, because Showalter would have FIVE!
