Did you read that is what the Yankees would need to do, or are you thinking it? I can see Montero, as he wont stay a catcher and has the higher profile bat. Romine is nice, but I dont see a team flocking to get him by trading away a talent like Cliff Lee.
Lost in all this is the reason they are shopping him....its not just that the season went South for them in a hurry, its that he has been bitching and complaining, and has alienated himself from the clubhouse. A team with chemistry like the Yankees may look into this sort of thing deeper and choose to pass, especially while they are already winning.
Just read this weekend how Montero is having a horrid season (and again, its being blamed on his trying to fix the unfixable, his catching) while Romine has been solid.

What I read was that the Mariners would be interested in one of the catchers and Eduardo Nunez. Montero's definitely having a horrible season, but it's not like your talent leaves you overnight. Hell, Tex is having a horrible season too, but we're not ready to toss him aside as done.
I doubt Montero has lost his value after 2 months.
Montero's high profile bat and high ranking would have appeal, and I don't know if they would necessarily care as much about his defense as the Yankees would. The Yankees have a lot of crowd drawing superstars. The Mariners don't.
Let's give Montero the benefit of the doubt and have him become a MLB Mike Piazza or Victor Martinez--phenomenal bat, well below average catcher. The Mariners would get 6 years of that in exchange for losing half a year of Lee, and would likely pay Montero the same amount over that span as one full year of Lee.
Even if Montero changes positions or becomes a DH, it's still a nice bit of potential star power.
Such a trade would make you happy too since it clears the way for Romine as the catcher of the future, and brings in Lee.
I think you're right that Montero would be needed to get it done. Bigger name.
An extension would likely be required on the Yankees part to do this as well.

Mariners will not be interested in a catcher who can hit and cant catch. Its why they did not use Jeff Clement as a catcher. Its why they put up with Jokijima so long. They are built for defense first in this and many regards.
Trust me, Montero will not end up catching anywhere. Montero is not even as good as Piazza or Victor Martinez back there.

Maybe, but the Mariners also had a guy who was borderline HOFer who spent his entire career as a DH for them. Plus, Montero wouldn't be alone in the deal. Eduardo Nunez is doing very well at SS in AAA, and the Mariners would be interested.

Mystery Man Josh Schmidt is again posting very solid numbers, this year in AAA.
22 appearnces (all relief) 30 IP 3-2, 2.05 ERA 33 K's, 16 BB's 20 hits allowed
his walks are high, but the rest of his numbers are impressive. What does this guy have to do to get a shot?

Do something in all the other pro years of his career to prove he is not just having a lucky run of things.
And 36 runners in 30 innings of relief is nothing to do headstands over. Its fine, but there are hundreds of lines like that in the minors.

Nice to see 6 in the top 100. It would be nicer if there were a few OFers in there, but hopefully these pitchers will thrive in AA
