Anything that does not fit under the cherrypicked Devil/Ranger/Islander threads can reside here.
This involves the Islanders and the Rangers, and its got me glum. Rangers got a Hell of a replacement for JD in the booth, in 8-year Islander color guy Joe Micheletti. Muchnick pretty much says that since Joe's contract was with MSG/SNY he had little choice in the matter. So beyond the fact the Islanders are treated like the second class citizens (and I dont care about that, really) the Islanders lose a Hell of an announcer, who added to every game he called.
Interested to see what the Islanders do to replace him. He'll be missed, and I wont be hearing him unless he peeks in on some national telecasts.

Mixed feelings about this one. I'ven't heard much of him but from what I remember he neither impressed me (I felt him to be kinda bland) nor angered me (he didn't say stupid things, and that's pretty much all I can ask for from an announcer these days). I would have preferred someone more homegrown (and if Mushnick is correct, that's pretty shitty), but I'll give him a chance, especially as you vouch for him.
I'm pretty sure he was on one of the NBC announce teams last year. Have they and OLN/"Versus" yet announced a replacement for JD?

See, the thing with Micheletti is besides being concise and coming across as knowing what he was talking about, he was not afraid to wave the scythe and take people to task. As Muchnick mentioned, it will be interesting to see if he continues this, as Dolan frowns upon putting down the home product. Micheletti was quick to blister Islander players for lax play, or just plain bad play. I really liked the guy.

He's done a lot of blistering over the past few years. And I agree: I prefer an announcer who will rip a team or player that needs ripping. Sadly, many of them are constrained by the higher-ups, with the worst example being Marv Albert getting the boot from MSG.

I'm stoked. The Islanders are coming to LA and Anaheim this year on back to back days.

When Dana and I were in San Diego 3 years ago we got to see the Ducks conduct an open morning practice at the San Diego sports arena. It was a fun time, and since then I have followed the Ducks as my "west coast team" for the late-night hockey gander. Have a couple of beers for me, and tell Ryan Getzlaf we said hello.

I am very unhappy that the Ducks are no longer mighty. If they must drop the "mighty," they should change their name entirely, as there is nothing bad-ass about a regular duck.

If they're going to go that far I've always been arguing they should move a team back to Hartford. I'll never forgive or forget when they moved all the teams from Winnipeg, Hartford, The Nordiques. Brong back the Patrick Division and all that shit. Wishful thinking but if they're going to go as far as pretty much change a team name, a name everyone knows cause of the movie, they should change the shit people really hate. How in the hell does the NHL move the Hartford Whalers and for Ron Francis to have a sendoff in fucking Carolina? He had a small little dinky thing in the inor league teams stadium in Hartford, that's it. Ron Francis gets shit and they rob a great hockey city like minnesota, just to bring a team back, the fucking Wild. Bllleeecccchhhhh!!!!! Now they fuck with the Ducks name, just move them to Vegas and call them the Outlaws you fucking dickhead Bettman.

Ty Gretzky, son of hockey's all-time greatest player, Wayne Gretzky, has enrolled at Shattuck-St. Mary's in Faribault, Minn., to play hockey this season. Ty is a 6-foot, 155-pound sophomore forward who will be able to play away from the pressure that would surround him in Phoenix, where his legendary father coaches the NHL's Coyotes. "He's a nice kid and good student who just wants to play hockey," said J.P. Parise, the former North Star who recruits for Shattuck-St. Mary's. "We don't have names on the back of our jerseys, so he can live his own life here."

The Kings worked the Ducks over last night. I'm a Kings fan by osmosis because my girlfriend and her entire family are Kings freaks, and I'm an Islanders fan by default, but overall I'd categorize my interest in hockey as "the sport that is slowly replacing the NBA in keeping my interest captured while there's no baseball."
The Ducks didn't look so hot, despite the fact that they kept advertising a quote out of USA Today on the scoreboard which stated that they are one of the favorites to win the 2007 Stanley Cup. Who does that?
The new uniforms are pretty horrendous, however they're a vast improvement over the Ducks occasional and experimental purple and black blatant rip-off of the Kings last season and the prior season.
I thought the removal of the "mighty" was an attempt to move away from the Disney connection, however they've held on to the Donald Duck-like mascot, so I don't really see the point. What was really interesting was that they haven't gotten around to removing the "MIGHTY" from a lot of various signs around the arena. I thought that might be first on the agenda.
I was glad to see Sean Avery come out on the losing end of a fight. He's a punk. But my favorite King, and 3rd greatest hockey player of all-time (sorry...inside joke) Dustin Brown didn't play so hot for the Kings.

The Penguins will not name a new captain for the upcoming season, out of "respect" for retired Captain Mario Lemiuex. Instead, they will have 3 alternative captains to be named, one of which will surely be the mouthy Sidney C.

I'm thinking you are definitely doing SOMETHING wrong, if a girl starts discussing Mario Lemieux (or any other hockey player) during sex. I have thought about sex during hockey, but NEVER vice versa...

Are you fucking kidding mer? Just say you didn't know I was joking in that stupid post. Please say you didn't take the time to SERIOUSLY respond to a stupid post I made. I mean first you respond back to a retarded post just to call into question my sexual prowless. If anyone has ever seen Married with Children, and knows the motion Al does after hearing Kelly say something stupid, I'm doing the same exact thing now after reading that last post.
god you are more annoying than a foghorn.

I am not liking this new trend in hockey jerseys, which may hit us full force next year if Reebock and others have their way. They want to streamline things. No more loose uniforms...there is even talk of having tops that tuck into the shorts. If you notice the new Sabres uniforms, they have no stripes or piping at the bottom, which makes the logo look like it is floating high. There is nothing to designate the bottom of the jersey, per se. Sigh. Pretty soon hockey players are going to be wearing form-fitting streamlined mountain-biker type outfits.

I swear on my mothers grave I will fucking protest, riot, rape and pillage if/should the Rangers do it. To me nothing is more horrible than the Islanders orange alt jersey(no offense Isle fans, but it stinks). I know the Rangers sorta did that with their alt jersey, the one with the statue of liberty head, there's no bottom but there are lines and color changes on the arms if I'm not mistaken, but fuck that's not the same. I still wish home jerseys were white, but in the Rangers case, the reason they were always called the blueshirts isn't a coincidince, so a part of me doesn't care. but if they are going to do that in the entire league, the leg protectors can't and shouldn't be the same color. I mean are we trying to forget hockey existed last century altogether? The "floating" logo is fucking homo. No queer or whatever.

The Islanders' orange jersey is God-awful, no argument from me. They look like a bunch of Sunkist cans rolling around the ice.

Oh, James, its going to happen. Its not necessarily going to be the Rangers choice. By next season I hear the jersey style will be different. This will not necessarily effect the logo, and teams are not going to be required to add swoops under the arm or anything like that. But what they are moving towards is a tighter fitting uniform, which may end up being tucked in. I think it will be a MERCHANDISING nightmare more than anything, cause part of the allure of wearing a hockey jersey is, well, its a hockey jersey.

My own personal objection to wearing a hockey jersey has always been the length of the sleeves. They're just too long. I don't want anything hanging past my wrists...it's annoying and uncomfortable. I always wondered why hockey jerseys, both the pro's versions and the replicas sold to the public, didn't go the way of the three-quarter sleeve. I mean, the pros wear the big bulky gloves anyway, so it's not as if all that extra length is necessary. Anyway, thats the reason I won't wear a hockey jersey...I don't wanna look like Jennifer Love Hewitt and her stupid long sleeves: On another note - I hate the renaissance fair jerseys with the laces on the neck. If I'm gonna wear one, I wanna look like a hockey player, not Robin Hood:

Obviously you yokes have heard by now that although he will not need surgery, Malkin will miss somewhere in the neighborhood of the Penguins' first 10 games. Too bad, but when you consider initial fears that his season would have been toast if the knife had to be wielded for repair, the Penguins should take it.

I think the LA Kings pulled what will evolve into a steal by grabbing highly touted Jack Johnson from the Canes (along with Oleg Tverdosky) in exchange for Tim Gleason and Eric Belanger.
Johnson has been resisting Carolina's pleas to leave college behind and get in the lineup. This deal leaves Carolina with only 2 Europeans on the starting roster with the jettisoning of Tverdosky, by far the least in the league. In a few years Johnson is going to be a Hell of a player, and the Kings got him on the cheap.
