Whoo hoo. Quite the pricetag (O'Marra, Neisen, 1st round pick next year) but rumor has it that his name will be signed to a contract, locking him up, making him Islander property. As long as he is not a simple "rental" - I can live with losing some bloom off the rose.
Its funny poking around on some hockey sites and seeing the Edmonton fans ready to burn down their city, other teams fans angry that the Islanders pulled a 'steal' and that their team could have offered a better package, and the random Islander fan angry about the trade.

Isn't there an NHL thread already?
That said, looks like MacTavish threw in the towel on this year. They should have tried to start rebuilding earlier this season since just about everyone had them pegged to not go far after losing Pronger and a few other key players over the summer. Jw

I did not want this news to get lost in the 500 posts in there.
Funny, if Smyth went to the Rangers you would have started a new thread and asked me to tack it to the top, I bet. Sucks to be doing nothing for the playoff push, huh?

Actually, if that had happened I'd probably not post on this board much less start a new topic. Jw

A gamble, but worth the risk. Outside of NJ, there is not a team in the East they cannot beat. Do not get me wrong, they can lose to any team as well, but they are going for it.
Try and catch lightning in a bottle, hope NJ gets picked off and maybe they can make a run. They need a year with a deep playoff run to renergize the fan base, but even a playoff round win will make this worth it.
I was at the Coliseum last night, everyone loved this trade that I ran into.

Yeah, all said and done right now I am pleased as punch. I could see Smyth bolting back up to Edmonton after the curtain closes on this season, though, letting us see the world of "hockey rentals" firsthand. In fact, I would not be surprised if there is already a "handshake deal" in place. But who knows, the Islanders are weaving some magic, maybe they can coax him to stay. He will certainly become a fan favorite in no time.
