Nobody here watched the De La Hoya - Mayweather fight? I did.
How anti-climactic. Mayweather won - he clearly outpointed De La Ho ya, but that's ALL he did. What a blah effort from Mayweather after talking all that crap.
I'm stoked for the upcoming Winky Wright - Bernard Hopkins fights.

Are there NO boxing fans here? I'm watching the Cory Spinks / Jermaine Taylor fight as I type this.
Jermaine Taylor continues to annoy the shit out of me because he's still the middleweight champ of the world, despite being an extremely flawed fighter and a master at ducking the best fighters. His most impressive feat to date are two questionable wins over a great welterweight in Bernard Hopkins. Hopkins shouldn't have taken those fights - he's a great welterweight, but completely out-sized by any decent middleweight. Furthermore, the one great fighter that Taylor was unable to avoid, Winky Wright, who is basically a welterweight as well, really just out-boxed him from post to post, but Taylor was able to pull off a HIGHLY questionable draw. And Taylor was able to successfully dodge the rematch.
Spinks just doesn't have the firepower to expose Taylor in this fight...I wish someone would step up and end this idiocy that is the Jermaine Taylor reign of the middleweight division.

I'll watch boxing if I remember that there's a big match on HBO, but no way am I spending money on PPV.
I happened to turn on HBO as the decision was announced last night. Whilst Lampley and Merchant's post-match commentary sure was fun, I'm glad I missed this fight (though I hear the undercard was pretty good).

Lampley was right - the fight was a dismal bore. But, in my opinion, that's a testament to the alleged greatness of Jermaine Taylor. He is merely a good fighter in a division currently populated by nobody. He missed the most the most impressive long-term domination of a single weight class in the history of boxing, by just missing out on the Roy Jones Jr. reign of terror over the middle-weight division in the 90s. Furthermore, if Winky had been just a little bigger and hadn't spend years of anonymity in a very low-profile junior middleweight division, Taylor would have run up against Wright earlier, and would surely have had a blemish on his record much sooner. Taylor is boxing's big fish in a small pond.

Antonio Tarver just succeeded in making a very small splash with his attempted comeback - earning a share of the light-heavyweight title, winning the IBO belt this weekend. Looks like the Rocky Balboa hangover has worn off...I hope this douchebag gets his head handed to him by New Haven's own Chad Dawson.

Boxing is as dead as rock and roll. And Tarver stinks.

Well, thankfully I didn't watch it...I just saw the recap.
James, boxing is only dead if you expect every fight to be like Ivan Drago vs Apollo Creed. There are some very good fighters, who are enjoyable to watch - Winky Wright is my current fave. Manny Pacquio (sp?) fights are usually non-stop action blood fests.

I'm not saying they aren't good fighters, or there are none out there, I just don't think boxing as the same big time events like it was with Tyson when I was growing up. Fights aren't nearly as competive as they were, Domi said it best, boring. The de la hoya fight was brutal to watch. Yeah i'm biased cause I'll sit and watch old fights like Ali, Sugar Ray, Marciano, Louis, Frazier, Foreman etc. I know fights can't be like that anymore, and I'm not going to get started on the doctors, but it's almost like it's not a sweet science anymore. I know it sounds stupid its just how i feel. Boxing use to have a graceful, violent beauty, now it's just watered down shit. I'm not asking for murder, but put it like this, I made money cause I knew the De La Hoya fight was going the distance not for picking the winner. i did that too, but I made more betting it'd be a shit fight that'd go the distance and have ZERO action. It's why UFC is becoming more popular and I couldn't be happier. I think the knockouts and constant action are making it more well known and more popualr than a sport that's been around for over a hundred years. Just my two cents.

Speaking of boxing - I heard Tommy Morrison on the radio last night.
Am I WAY late on this? Am I the only one who didn't know that Morrison DOESN'T have AIDS/HIV Positive? Apparently a rather unscrupulous character falsified Morrison's blood tests some 11 years ago, sent Morrison into a downward spiral of a life of drugs and petty crime, prison...and now it turns out that Morrison is not only AIDS/HIV free...he is going to prove it by taking one private and one public blood test in the coming weeks in Nevada.
Morrison just won a Mixed Martial Arts fight, but has no plans to compete as a MMA fighter - he plans to resume his boxing career.
If the allegations about being duped into believe he tested positive are true...I wish the guy all the luck in the world.

My personal feeling on Mixed Martial Arts - I think it will remain a fringe sport. I don't think that people will ever look at it as a true "sport." I liken it to Arm Wrestling competitions. I'm not knocking the guys who do it...I just don't think it will ever break through to the mainstream on the level that boxing has. I don't think ESPN Classics or HBO Sports will ever be doing any Hoyce Gracie documentaries...and I don't think they will ever draw in the CASUAL fan for big events the way boxing does.
I'm not knocking the amount of skill required to fight MMA style and I'm not knocking the competitiveness of the "sport" - I'm just saying that boxing is something that is embedded in the fiber of Americana, and it's going to take MMA some time and some doing before it can uproot that.

MMA is already looked upon as a real sport in Japan, as well as here among the die hards. It's still a young sport so you will still get the boxing purist shitting on it because it is slowly pushing boxing to the side.
MMA will only get bigger, while boxing will lose ground because the best fighters are non KO-powered Mexicans who the average fan doesn't want to watch or follow. All the black fighters are primadonnas and there are about 5 white guys left. I love boxing, but it's corrupt base is finally killing it, and that's sad. People know and see this, and MMA is still a virgin when it comes to that sort of corruption, so it's getting ths something new spotlight.
And it most certainly is a sport.

Finally caught the recent Roy Jones Jr. comeback fight against the previously undefeated Hanshaw on MSG last night.
The hand speed of RJJ is not gone. For real boxing enthusiasts, even if you're not an RJJ fan, that hand speed is amazing to watch.
Roy Jones has always reminded me of Royce Gracie from Ultimate Fighting....every now and then you'd see Gracie tied up in a ball on the floor and all of the sudden the other guy taps out and you don't know what the fuck just happened, but behind the scenes Gracie is breaking the guys fingers, tweaking his ear, etc. Same thing with Jones....without fail, in every Jones fight you will see him purposely laying back, almost horizontally on the ropes, with his opponent bombing away on him (of course Roy's defense is up so nothing is landing) and then all of sudden you see the opponents head snap back violently 3 or 4 times. You didn't even catch what happened until they slow it down and replay it so that you see Roy land 2 straight rights and 2or 3 left hooks in the span of about 3 seconds. Amazing stuff.
Anyway, I'll be watching RJJs comeback attempt with interest especially since he alluded to a return to middleweight in anticipation of a chance to beat Hopkins ass one more time or fight Trinidad if he returns.

I would have bet ANYTHING that Floyd Mayweather Jr. did not have the power to knock out Hatton. Just .... WOW!

Are you insane? I knew Mayweather was going to destory him, I didn't even need to order it. It was the boxer vs the puncher. Guess who always wins?

YOU knew Mayweather was going to destroy him? You know Mayweather, who is NOTORIOUS for his lack of power , but his ability to get by on racking up points and sprinting around the ring to win fights....but somehow you knew he was going to knock Hatton out?
I'm calling malarky. You could have very well predicted Mayweather to win the fight, even dominate the fight on points and speed, but nobody, and I mean nobody thought LITTLE FLOYD had the power to render Ricky Hatton unable to continue. If anything, all this tells us is that Hatton has no chin. I'm not saying that Mayweather isn't great...he's just not a power puncher and NOT a knock out artist. He's a lot more like Winky Wright than he is like Tommy Hearns.

I never liked Hatton as a fighter for one. And despite his record, he isn't that great. No chine like you said. And it don't matter what two guys are in there, the boxer almost always beats the puncher. From the highlights i saw, Hatton threw early and tired out fast. Then Mayweather took over. You're right though, I didn't expect a KO like that, but then again, when has Hatton ever been any good on defense? I couldn't see Hatton winning that fight, and I know it's easy to say that after the fact, but it really wasn't a question to me so I didn't even see the point in posting about or ordering the fucking fight. Fuck Hatton, he's fucking garbage. And the better all around fighter won.

Yeah, but I'm just tired of hearing LITTLE FLOYD spout off about his pound for pound rankings. Let's get this straight now - Floyd Mayweather Jr. is NOT the best or one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world. All he's shown me so far is that he can beat Oscar De La Hoya in a track meet.
His lucky he's too light to fight Winky Wright or Bernard Hopkins....and if Trinidad comes back and fights in the lower weight class, LITTLE FLOYD will get smoked. When is he gonna fight Cotto?

Post by cactusjames on Dec 12, 2007 12:53:21 GMT -5
You're not gonna hear me go on and on how he's the best fighter in the world, there are way better fighters. And honestly, I've been keeping up with less and less fights lately so I couldn't tell you when or if he's fightinbg Cotto. But I agree, those three you named would light him up. Then again, I was never impressed with Hopkins, couldn't tell you why, just something about him as a fighter.

As the ultimate Roy Jones Jr. fan, I was tickled as shit when RJJ DIDN'T back out of the Hopkins fight due to the hand he broke while training, and systematically whipped Hopkins' ass with his left!!!!
But since then, Hopkins has talked big shit and backed it all up. The most impressive thing Hopkins EVER did was throw a bowl of beans and rice all over Tito Trinidad at the press conference. Hopkins was the heavy underdog, and when asked why he threw the beans and rice all over Tito, he said, "I'm the EXECUTIONER. I'm giving him his last meal. Isn't that what those people (referring to Puerto Ricans) eat...beans and rice?" And then Hopkins smoke Trinidad in the ring.

One of the biggest crimes is that Bramble never got to mix it up with Pryor or Camacho while in his prime.

Man, I watched a Diego Corrales fight last night, in which he was all downtrodden after the loss and telling Jim Gray that you've probably seen the last of me....then the guy goes and buys it in a motorcycle accident. Sad.
