I didn't get to see this fight, but I'm REALLY REALLY bummed out about Pavlik just getting dismantled by Hopkins.

Normally I'd be in this thread gloating after a Roy Jones Jr. fight.
But not today, as Calzaghe dismantled him Saturday night.
It's been a bad month for me, boxing-wise. My two favorite current fighters both lost: Jones and Pavlik.
I fear that my ALL TIME favorite fighter, Roy Jones Jr., should call it an illustrious career. Fighter of the decade, probably fighter of the first half of this decade.....definitely the most dominant fighter spanning two weight-classes (middle, light-heavy) of all time...but it's time to go. Pretty glum about this.

I thought so too.
Calzaghe hasn't really defeated ANYONE of significance other than Jeff Lacey.
He's the UK's version of Julio Cesar Chavez, who built up a 99-0 career fighting local "Tijuana Cab Drivers."
Calazghe beat Hopkins recently...but I shook that off because of Hopkins' age. I still don't think Joe Calzaghe could have even begun to sniff a victory against Jones if we were talking about Jones of the early 2000s, but that's a moot point now - kudos to Calzaghe. I was really hoping that Pavlik would beat Hopkins and the winner of this fight would take on Pavlik.

Under the radar, with all of the shake ups occurring in the middleweight division, 2 once-great champions slugged it out this past weekend in attempts to revive their careers....Jermaine Taylor beat Jeff Lacey.
This might open the door for Taylor to take on the winner of what will surely be a Pavlik-Hopkins rematch.

I don't suppose anyone watched the De La Hoya / Pacquiao fight?
I did. Shelled out the $54 for it.
Great fight. I'm NOT a De La Hoya fan. I was really perturbed that De La Hoya chose a guy who he naturally outweighs by 30 lbs and is much stronger than....and then tried to sell it as a even playing field, marquee match-up test of his skills....and further tried to make it personal due to the Bob Arum/Golden Boy Promotions lawsuits over the rights to promote Pacquiao a few years back.
The fact that the (naturally) smaller, weaker Pacquiao lit Oscar's ass up for 8 rounds, leaving Oscar unable to answer the bell, makes me giddy! Manny fucked Oscar up BAD, made him look old and slow, and truly solidified his spot as the current number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world!

I finally watched the Roy Jones Jr. / Joe Calzaghe fight on HBO last night (this is a month old fight...or so).
I'm pretty glum. It is now time to officially turn the page, Roy. Enjoy retirement. This guy is my all-time favorite fighter as no fighter in the history of boxing has dominated multiple weight-classes for a decade plus (1990 through approx 2003) like Roy Jones had. Unfortunately for Jones, he dominated the unsexy middle-weight and various light-heavyweight divisions during a time when welterweight and heavyweight divisions were thriving. The middleweight division hasn't been glamorous since the days of Sugar Ray Robinson. If Roy had higher profile fights and if the middle-weight and light heavyweight divisions were higher profile, we'd easily be talking about Roy Jones on Ali-levels (as a matter of fact, considering the dominating way in which he won his fights and the humiliation his opponents received, and his winning percentage, Roy Jones pound for pound right on par with Ali.
The sad thing was that Calzaghe beat Jones using vintage Jones tactics - speed (and I never could have ever imagined a fighter with faster hand speed than Jones....but alas this is Jones pushing 40, not Jones of the 90s) trickery and even humiliating showboating.
Pretty sad that this era in boxing has ended. Let's hope Jones ends it officially by calling it a day.

I am FIRED up. My guy, my ALL TIME guy, Roy Jones Jr. has seen better days and has probably smartly called it quits. My other guy, Kelly Pavlik, still champion, has seemed to disappear into oblivion with one low-key defeat of Marco Antonio Rubio rather than come out and avenge his loss to Bernard Hopkins. Over the past year, despite me not being a fan of the lighter weights, my father-in-law (RIP) turned me into a Manny Pacquiao fan. So tonight was big. On top of that, I can't stand that illiterate, loudmouth, shit-talker Floyd Mayweather (Sr.)......so after watching week after week of Pacquiau/Hatton 24-7 on HBO in listening to Hatton and his trainer Mayweather slag Manny and his trainer Freddy Roach, calling Manny a mule, an amateur, unskilled, etc.... it was DELIGHTFUL to see Manny fucking bury Hatton in two rounds. Manny knocked his ass down twice in the first and OUT in the 2nd

3-Time Boxing Champ Alexis Arguello Found Dead in Home
MANAGUA, Nicaragua — Managua Mayor Alexis Arguello, a three-time world boxing champion, was found dead at his home Wednesday, his Sandinista Party's Radio Ya said.
Radio Ya said coroners were conducting an autopsy on the 57-year-old mayor to determine the cause of death, but it appeared to be a suicide. The La Prensa newspaper reported he was found with a gunshot wound to the chest.
The Hall of Fame boxer was the top fighter of the 20th century in his weight class, according to a panel of experts assembled by The Associated Press in 1999.
The death of Arguello prompted President Daniel Ortega to announced he was canceling a trip to Panama for the inauguration of President-elect Ricardo Martinelli.
Arguello fought against the Sandinista government in the 1980s after it seized his property and bank account, according to the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
But he joined the party to win the mayorship of the capital in 2008, though opponents alleged the vote was fraudulent.
"We are upset," said presidential spokeswoman, Rosario Murillo, who declined to give details about the death. "This is a heartbreaking announcement. He was the champion of the poor, an example of forgiveness and reconciliation."
Born in 1952, the Hall of Fame boxer fought 14 world champions and in 1981 he became the sixth man in boxing history to win a title in three weight divisions — featherweight, super featherweight and lightweight — according to the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
Arguello returned Sunday from Puerto Rico where he honored the late baseball Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente.

Floyd Money Mayweather has agreed to fight Manny Pacquiao.
I am pulling HARD for Manny!
A few things:
Mayweather is cited for his incredible hand-speed. Manny's hand-speed might be equal. I don't think Mayweather has fought anyone as fast as he is.
Mayweather literally RAN from De La Hoya the whole fight...basically chicken-pecking at De La Hoya for points, while De La Hoya was clearly the aggressor and landed more power shots. Mayweather outscored Oscar, but many feel De La Hoya was the legit winner of the fight. On the flip side, Manny Pacquiao absolutely dominated and destroyed Oscar.

And then of course we have the personality issues at play.
I hate when good things happen to bad people. Manny is a class act. Mayweather if a fuckin' dick!
Go Manny!
