LOL @ "a parsnip."
Dana actually did the corned beef in the slow cooker, on a slow sizzle all day, drenched in apple butter. The cabbage she boiled stand-alone this time around.
I was reading up on cabbage. It used to be a regular staple of the dining table, but soon developed a rep as a "poor mans food." It also has an odor that is actually considered a "rotting" flavor. Many call it the corpse of the table.

One of my cats is the corpse of the table. As for me, leftover stir-fried chicken and seafood from Precious, my favorite Hoboken Chinese joint.

I'm the cook in my house as well (although my wife dials a mean pizza) and I too made some corned beef and cabbage in the slow cooker for St. Patrick's Day.
I also threw in some potatoes, carrots, celery, garlic, parsley and onion.
It was pretty good actually, although there were leftovers in fridge afterwards.
The weekend before that I made my first attempt at an Irish Stew from scratch. Also done in the slow cooker and (Not to brag) it was fantastic. I used Guinness of course, 2 lbs of meat and among other things - I went out and bought my very first parsnip in my life. I'm sure I've eaten it before but I've never purchased it or cooked with it before. To be honest - once the stew was cooked - I couldn't tell the parsnip from the potato.
That stew will be made again.

We do corned beef in the slow cooker as well. We have it more than once a year, also. In fact, we had corned beef about a month before St. Patty's.
We do everything in the cooker (including the cabbage - we have a huge slow cooker), and instead of water in cooker, we use a bottle of Sam Adams. Cabbage tends to have no flavor if you cook it in water. The beer really adds a good flavor.
We use the slow cooker for many recipes (meat loaf, pulled pork, chicken, stuffed peppers, italian sausage and sauce...). The slow cooker is the bomb. I love having dinner ready when I get home. Someone should start a slow cooker recipe thread.

We have that book!
The slow cooker IS the bomb, no doubt. I am an avid fan. And its good for someone like me, who likes to play around in the kitchen but is far from a gourmand. Most of the recipes I pull are simple enough, and yeah, I like "fixin it and forgettin' it" and just dealing with the wafting smell through the day.
I spent some time this weekend while watching the NASCAR race poring through some of the heap of cookbooks we have on hand, highlighting some recipes I wish to tackle. Yeah, once one of you guys are game, do start a recipe thread, if I dont come up with something first.

We received a HUGE slow cooker as part of one of our wedding gifts. It's great. The slow cooker recipe book that we have is called "The Best Slow Cooker Recipe Book Ever" Here's a link to it on Amazon www.amazon.com/Best-Slow-Cooker-Cookbook-Ever/dp/0060172665I've 2 or 3 of the recipes in it. There's one for a spaghetti dinner that good. Usually I visit www.allrecipes.comI search for the recipe I want, find 3 or 4 for the meal I am making and then take bits and pieces of them and make them my own. You know - remove any mushrooms, up the garlic and the hot spices, etc etc. This week it is going to be Fish Stew. Someone mentioned making pulled pork in the slow cooker. I LOVE pulled pork, I've never made it at home. I'd love a recipe for that if isn't a family secret. I've done ribs in the slow cooker but never pulled pork. Stuffed Peppers are one of my specialties but I've never done those in the slow cooker either..... I might have to look into that. I was thinking that one of my favorite things about the slow cooker is that it's hard to screw it up. You toss everything in - stir it once and awhile - I love that the smell wafts through the house as it cooks - you come home from work and there's great meal waiting for you. But it got me thinking - Has anyone really screwed up a meal in a slow cooker? Are there any slow cooker don'ts? I've heard that some beans can go rock hard in slow cooker but thats the only pitfall I've heard about.

wow I just read some of the reviews to that cookbook I posted a link to.... My husband started calling my crockpot the crap-pot because the recipes from this book were so bad. Even our dog refused to eat the chili from this cookbook. That's harsh... the reviews suck overall but screw the haters. I thought it contained some great info about slowcooker units.

A lot of people use Amazon reviews to bitch and moan cause they are miserable at home. You can spot them a mile away. Usually they are greeted with a "3 of 28 people found this review helpful' over their name, cause everyone recognizes they are just being party poopers.
We have not had any slow cooker snafus yet, but I would imagine they are out there. I sure have bungled things i slapped in a casserole dish and laid in the oven, though.
I like recipe sites where you pick a couple of ingredients and throw them in the seach field, like "beer, hot sauce, mushrooms" and every recipe that has all 3 comes up. Whoo hoo!

Chicken-apple sausages (thank you, George Foreman Grill!) and roasted vegetables (thank you, precooked Shop Rite food and microwave!). First time I tried either one, and both were excellent.

Just finished an egg salad sandwich with bacon, and a bowl of lobster bisque... the hospital cafeteria at Stony Brook is actually pretty good, and CHEAP. Lunch cost me $5.97!

Corned beef sandwich on french bread. Lite Mayo and Schwartz's mustard. Schwartz is a famous deli in Montreal - Best montreal smoked meat I've ever had by far. I didn't know they sold the mustard outside of Quebec until i walked by it yesterday at the grocery store. Oh and it's got some pickle and slice of 5 yr old cheddar.

Company took us out to lunch again, thats the 3rd time in 4 work days, not counting an after-work outing to Carmines. I am having trouble keeping up. We went to Changing Times Pub here by the LI Office. I had fried clam strips and fries, and a tall cool Coca Cola.

Second time I have been there, for lunch only. Never haunted the bar area. And, as I enjoyed work sponsored lunches with the management, never had an alcoholic beverage there. I like lunching there, they have dozens of tvs all over the place, and I was watching everything from hockey highlights, to Boris Yeltsin remembrances, to a huge brush fire being shown from Oakdale on News 12.

Awhile ago someone mentioned they had a good recipe for doing pulled pork in a slowcooker.
Could you post it or a link to it here please?
many thanks.
I made Jerk chicken in our slowcooker last week. It turned out much better then I could have hoped. Aside from the stuff I had on a beach in Ochos Rios (Jamaica) it was the best I've ever had.

You said "pulled pork" heh heh. And "jerk" too. Heh heh.
There is obviously more than one Changing Times locale. The one I went to was in Farmindgale, but Gerry Martire is taking the "Rock and Roll Road Show" to Changing Times this Friday.....in East Northport.
