Talking with Tom about the young guns of Baseball playing in college has gotten me into this event over the past few years. I'm starting to see players we spoke about a few years ago emerging in the bigs, and Baseball is awesome no matter the level, so, I figured I'd kick off this thread as I had lunch.
The field of 64 just filled out, and back to back champs Oregon State didn't make the cut.
Miami seem to be the favorites.

Caught a couple of Fullerton's games this year...funny this post came up. I could have sworn the Titans would be playing in Long Beach today and the wife and I contemplated going, but no the case - it was actually yesterday. Last game of the season.
Hopefully one of the regional games will be close and I can check that out.

just did the research. I might actually look into a double header this coming friday.
Game 1 -- Virginia (38-21) vs. UCLA (31-25), 7 p.m. (ESPNU) Game 2 -- Rider (29-26) vs. Cal St. Fullerton (37-19), 9 p.m. (ESPNU)

I'd like to make it to one of these games eventually. Must be a nice experience to see the sport played at the college level where salary doesn't come into play.

The field of 64 just filled out, and back to back champs Oregon State didn't make the cut. Oregon State had a tough weekend, losing some regional tourney games. They backpedaled and its not enough. I dont get ESPN-U, but I will be able to catch a good deal of action. I too enjoy this sort of ball, although guys like Walkman John cant get over the "aluminum bat" thing. Great to see you start this thread, Grover. I am glad your love of baseball has expanded to college. It is indeed very fulfulling to starting to see prospects you have seen play in the CWS popping up on draft boards, or even better, in the big show in a couple of years. As to Miami, just read a great piece on Yonder Alonso in Baseball America just this past week. You know, I give A-Rod lots of rips about being so in-shape with no known workout regimen, but apparently this Alonso kid spent a good chunk of the offseason working out with Alum A-Rod from 5AM-noon daily. My Texas team is ranked around 19, so its a tough haul. Also Fullerton's road looks tough as well. Miami is indeed ranked # 1. YONDER ALONSO

Some interesting doings about, hope you guys are still paying attention. Only games available to me today are some of the "College Station Regionals" - its Texas AM's pool. There is a battle today at 1:30, and the winner of such plays Texas A&M at 7:30 to see who moves onward. We have barbecues up the kazoo today, and I can only DVR one to watch, so I will pick that later game. I'll watch tonight. Texas fights for the life today against - gasp - St Johns, in an all or nothing. Thats where most of my attentions lie at this stage.

Tom, hope you had fun watching those Longhorn Cocksuckers (that's from a movie...can't remember which) go down in flames. Yesterday was a bit of a baseball extravaganza for me. Started off the day watching the Yanks on YES....LOSE! No offense whatsoever...WTF?!?! Then the wife and I made the 15 minute hike up to North OC, to Goodwin Field, to watch my alma mater Cal State Fullerton take on the Virginia squad - winner forces an afternoon game with UCLA. It was a good game, the Titans prevailed. The Cavs starting pitcher couldn't deal with the pressure apparently - the guy loaded the bases and gave up a HBP to allow the first run and eventually gave up 2 runs without allowing a hit, on a combination of walks and hit batters (as a matter of fact, in both of Fullerton's contests during the day we saw 4-6 runs allowed as a direct cause of hit batters). Anyway, we got to see Cory Arbiso take a 1-hitter into the 5th or 6th, and eventually tossing a complete game. I'm gonna say this now - keep an eye out for Fullerton standouts Christian Colon and Eric Komatsu (who had already been drafted by the Yankees out of high school) - you will hear about these guys, particularly Colon, in the pro ranks one day. Also Josh Fellhauer, although slumping in this regional, is quite the hitter. So anyway, after the Titans sent the Cavs home, they had about an hour to go to start up against the Bruins....we went home, got some dinner, then I spent the rest of the night watching an offense/error riddled snail's pace of a game, in which my Titans ultimately walloped the Bruins, forcing an elimination game tonight. I had been to a Titan game or two previously, but this was a much better atmosphere...quite the buzz around Goodwin Field yesterday. Here are some pics that my wife took: GAMEDAY!: Auggie's plaque: Cav's starting pitcher - AKA "The Wild Thing": The Cavaliers Huddle before the game: The Titans run drills: My bleacher duckets: Shevis Shima takes infield practice: outside Goodwin Field: Joel Weeks played a nice 3 bag: This was a very nice almost-diving-catch by OF Josh Fellhauer: The stuff of life: Just scored my duckets for the game: Hall Of Fame (you can barely make out Mark Kotsay and Jeremy Giambi's names at the bottom of the sign under 1996): Inside Goodwin Field: Alum Banners: Titan baserunner - result of yet another hit batsmen: Titans leadoff the game - as VISITORS on Goodwin Field: Titans send Virginia home: BRING ON THE BRUINS!

Nah, Pete - I'm into it man.
I'm no fan of the multi-colored hip-hop Yankee garb...but for some reason I've always had a fondness for camo-clothing. I wore camo pants all the time when I was a little punker kid, I still sport my camo surf trunks....so I decided, in this one instance, to break tradition and go with the Yankee camo.

camo in and of itself is cool, but is not w hen combined with Yankees. I'm sorry, but I have to give you the thumbs down on it. I have a full cammo suit, complete with boonie hat, or baseball USMC hat.
also, I don't like how Cal State Fullerton has almost ripped off the UF logo. But congrats to them, the field looked nice, even if they are thieves.

Cho, fantastic shots there. I may use some on top if I feel like it.
We've already covered this - Dana is a Fullerton fan, and we'll be watching them if they can make it to the "ESPN round."
I wasnt able to see any of the Texas games, they were not televised on the college package. Fell asleep last night watching A&M vs Houston instead, last night. Two barbecues will do that to a guy.
I'll be DVRing and watching a lot of college baseball from here on in.

Catch the Titans/Bruins Loser-Goes-Home Match tonight on ESPNU (Channel 609 on DirecTV), Tom...although it won't start till 11P EST.
I have larger versions of those shots.

They did bite the Gators just a bit, Pete...U of F only predates CSUF by about 100 YEARS!!!
But cut us some slack...we don't have a football team, our hoops team blows (only producing Cedric Ceballos who is noted more for going on AWOL on jet skiing vacation in lieu of reporting for his day job as part of the Lakers starting five than his playing career)....but you can't fuck with our hardball team!

Working on getting a more legible version of the All-Americans sign, Pete.
But to my knowledge, the real CSUF standouts future prominent major leaguers were Phil Nevin, Mark Kotsay, and Tim Wallach.
Obviously with baseball being much different than football and basketball, the real Major League superstars, by and large, didn't go to college.

Do you have DirecTV Tom...and do you have the regional sports package?
That's the package I have which offers all of the regional Fox Sports stations...if you have that, then you should get ESPNU

No, no, I am a Long Island Cablevision customer, and I get the FSN package of college sports channels for an extra 5 bucks a month. While they show college baseball, the schedule is spotty at best.

you left out Brent Mayne..... Yeah, I'm only kidding about stealing the logo. I may have to pick up one of their hats and see if anyone notices.
and you also left out Aaron Rowand.

UF has an alumni Tiny Chaplin, who when I first glanced thought was related to MSB.....
Dave Eiland went to UF, so did Al Rosen
As for St. Johns, only Rich Aurelia, John Franco and my wife's cousin Frank Viola stand out.... i guess i should brag about academics instead, oh wait, my grades suck.

Inning over, ballgame over, Regional over...Titans win.. thuhuhuhuhuh Titans.....nevermind.
What a game...a nail-biter.
These colleges are hectic. These pitchers, even the so-called "aces" can't locate worth a shit for the most part, so at any given time a there's a likely chance that a batter is going to be hit or a long ball given up.
Christian Colon continued to dazzle in the field and at the plate. The Bruins have a guy...can't remember the name....63rd top prospect in the country...who made this game quite uncomfortable for me.
So next week we've got Mike Mussina's alma mater here at Goodwin Field for the Super Regional - I hope Dana's team makes Mussina's Saturday a shitty one.
It was a pretty impressive feat I must say...you get down in the losers bracket in one of these regionals and you have to win three straight games (one against the other team in the loser bracket and 2 straight against the top team) in a span of 2 days.
Next Saturday is my daughter's 9th b-day...I'm hoping she wants tickets to the NCAA CWS Super Regional for her birthday! ;D ;D

Cal State Fullerton makes an appearance, live tonight at 10:30 on ESPN2. I will have it on, while I lax and read. I had to turn off one of the earlier games today cause it had a woman play by play announcer - Robin Roberts maybe? Sounded like her...not only did I not stick around long enough to confirm, I did not stick around long enough to see which game it was.
Got the Miami tilt on now, with the Yankees in pic and pic.
