I've seen how a few other death pools operate. Ours have just been fun picks, and have enjoyed increased fun b/c of two qualities or "rules" that dont apply to other predictive group lists. 1.) We keep carry-over names. This works well for us. We dont have to keep re-listing the same names every year, and we dont get all pissed off b/c "sonofabitch! I had him last year!" frustration. 2.) since we do keep the carry-overs, our new additions are only 5 names. The groups without them have lists of 15 names each, and the repeating doubling selections become hard to keep track of as well as less individualized too.
So, YAY for us!
That said, points system pools give incentives to take riskier celebrity picks. Three key groundrules to consider in 2014: 1.) "100 points minus the age of the dead celebrity" If this is adopted into our system, a pick like george gaynes (who is 95 years old) earns only 5 points when he dies. Instead of this guy, maybe a young lady like Joan Rivers (79yrs) gets the pick. 2.) "10 points if you are the only person who has the dead guy on their list." That rule gives incentives for unique selections. This way we dont all have zsa zsa or Bob Sheppard. Its not very fun if we all have the same ones. However, the group can veto people who nobody has heard of. So that stops me from picking my friend Zhenya who has stomach cancer and is in hospice already. 3.) "10 bonus points for the first death of the year." THAT will get me to post on January first now wont it?
What do you guys think?
