Uh....the other one is gone. Deleted by mistake, when I went to delete Cho's repeat thread. Blame Cho. Sigh. Some classic stuff was there already. Well, carry on! Please use this thread for all your wrestling memories!

HERE IS ACTUALLY ALL THE POSTS/TEXTS WE LOST IN MY ACCIDENTIAL PURGE, IN SCROLL-DOWN FASHION.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok, time for some good old time stuff here!!!
I'm currently watching my "Best Of Doom" DVDs. Good stuff!! They had a nice feud with the Steiners. Two of my favorite tag teams going at it made for good times.
I can say that WCW had a tag division that rivaled WWFs back in the day. Doom, Steiners, Road Warroris, Sky Scrapers, and I'm sure there is more I'm missing.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Doom I liked. In fact, Reed and Simmons were two of my favorite wrestlers even before they were put together, so it was quite the boondoggle for me when they were. As for the Steiners...blah. But that was mainly due to Rick. Hated him. You want old school? I need to pull out my Scott Steiner/Ric Flair battle on a Clash of the Champions when Steiner was still able to do his flips, Frankensteiners, and all that other jumping jack stuff he used to do, mullet and all.
This past week, as I was telling Grover on email, I threw on a Crusher Blackwell/Dino Bravo match from 1985 AWA, figuring it would go, what, 5 minutes? Well, it went 5. 10. 15. 20. 25. My Lord. And then it ends in a very lazy way - Blackwell simply scoops up Bravo, lumbers over to the ropes, and dumps him over the top, which was a DQ in the AWA environs.
Since I went in expecting the match to end at any time, I seemingly missed a lot, so I watched it again the next night. Man, a lot of you newjacks would hate this match. Long restholds, but all with a story. Headlocks and bearhugs, leg scissors. Both men are dead, Blackwell of kidney failure I believe, and Bravo by mob hit. How cool is that! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The coolest part of this thread is the weekly classics show. I didn't like the first show this week all that much. Seeing a heel Hogan making his MSG debut was cool. He reminded me of the Thunderlips character from Rocky III a bit.
What I did like was the second show, from 1987. What made that show so entertaining was Monsoon and Heenan. They're a LOT funnier than I remember. I always liked Heenan, but I never appreciated how good of a straight man Monsoon was.
Plus, I enjoy watching the crowd cheer loudly for who they were supposed to, and boo loudly for the heels. Link to Post - Back to Top 68.161.188.249 grover Joined: Aug 2006 Posts: 26 Re: Old School Wrastlin'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! « Reply #3 on Aug 25, 2006, 3:40pm »
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Speaking of the weekly classics show, did anyone catch the Savage/Adonis/Race Vs. Piper/JYD/Steamboat match?
Holy crap, funny stuff there! Slick did commentary with Gorilla, and he was killing me. He claimed JYD didn't know how to read and write. LOL!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I didnt see the show yet, I ran tape, but did Gorilla respond with a classic, "Will you stop!" in response? That commentary made the show. That was a cool match too. I get a kick out of JYD doing that crawling headbutt thing he did at the beginning of matches. Thinking about it, I don't remember seeing JYD pinned ever. Whenever he lost it was always count out or DQ.
Slick and Gorilla were funny. Like I said, I never realized how good of a straight man Monsoon was. Link to Post - Back to Top 68.161.188.249 sherifftom Joined: Aug 2006 Posts: 148 Re: Old School Wrastlin'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! « Reply #6 on Aug 25, 2006, 4:04pm »
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh, JYD got pinned many times. He had an old gag where he would be hit with something and stand swooning, then drop straight down like he was dead. He would then be easy fodder for a pin.
Poor JYD was part of one of the worst matches I ever did see, and certainly the worst Ric Flair match I ever saw. Yeah, Flair vs JYD at Coastal Crush 90, for WCW. Oh...my....God. JYD looked terrible. He was fat, lazy, and apparently drug ravaged at the time. Terrible match. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That still doesn't beat the Night Stalker/Sid match. Link to Post - Back to Top 24.136.118.81 sherifftom Joined: Aug 2006 Posts: 148 Re: Old School Wrastlin'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! « Reply #8 on Aug 25, 2006, 4:29pm »
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOL! That is exactly why I said "one of the worst matches.." - any match BUT the Sid/Nightstalker match will have that tag, cause that Sid/Nightstalker match cant be touched.
Oh, man. We used to watch that for laughs. Remember when Sid got clocked with the wooden axe? Or when "Big Cat" Hughes came down to the ring to interfere for ABSOLUTELY NO REASON? What a train wreck. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When I watched JYD, it was really from about 1985 until he left the WWF. If he did get pinned in that time period, I don't remember it. I just remember he was a top face at the time. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Watching a comp tape I made from 1996, and here is an LOL. While plugging the upcoming "Wargames - The Match Beyond" encounter, Tony Schiavone claimed, "since the Wargames match started in 1986, it has injured more wrestlers than any other match in professional wrestling history."
LOL! Can you provide us a list? Who would keep tabs on that factoid? Link to Post - Back to Top 69.122.147.142 sherifftom Joined: Aug 2006 Posts: 148 Re: Old School Wrastlin'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! « Reply #12 on Aug 27, 2006, 3:23pm »
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOL! Speaking of spew out of the mouth of announcers, watching "AWA Starcage 85" and one of the matches is former NCAA Collegiate champions Bob Backlund and Brad Rheingeins taking on "Hacksaw" Butch Reed and Larry Zybysko. Check out what Ken Resnick just said, on the mic..
He claimed that in a recent wrestling publication Backlund had published his home address, and asked the fans to write in who they thought the "real World Champion" was. This is obviously a continuation on the underground "Backlund was screwed" faction. Resnick than claimed that out of "1500 responses, only FOUR said someone other than Bob Backlund."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOL!! Did they say who the other 4 picked? Link to Post - Back to Top 24.136.118.81 sherifftom Joined: Aug 2006 Posts: 148 Re: Old School Wrastlin'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! « Reply #14 on Yesterday at 4:03pm »
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sad to say, no. LOL! Also during the match it was mentioned that fans "from across the country" were sending Backlund "homemade belts" and that Backlund was planning on bringing them all out on TV to thank the fans at some point. Thankfully, this never happened.
I was marking out during that match though, seeing Backlund going up against Butch Reed, one of my all-time favorites, and a guy I never knew he stepped in the ring against. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Actually, good idea, now that you have seen it. Anyway, the Road Warrior DVD is enjoyable, for the matches mostly. The documentary portion skips and glosses over a lot of stuff. I love my vintage wrestling packages.

LOL!! LOLOL!!! Not sure if this is really "old school" but it is 96. Well, its old enough.
Watching my 96 comp tapes. Jim Ross and Kevin Kelly were discussing a special event held in GI Janes backyard, some sort of special olympics gathering in a park in Toronto. Psycho Sid was there. They showed footage of him HAVING A TUG-OF-WAR WITH AN ELEPHANT. Yes, they did. He lost. It gets worse.
Ross went into this schpeil about how the kids there would not have it, that they could never consider Sid any sort of loser. So all these Special Olympians ran out and grabbed the rope along with Sid, and with thier combined efforts, they beat the elephant.
Sigh.
