Here is tonights offering. A little bit of springtime 89, and something a little more recent to chew on.
Tonight at 8/7 CT on the Madison Square Garden network, fans can get a taste of some of the previous WWE Garden history by watching MSG Classics. Hosted by WWE Hall of Famer "Mean" Gene Okerlund, MSG Classics re-lives some of the biggest WWE events from the World's Most Famous Arena.
The first hour will feature matches from the April 25, 1989 Garden show, which occurred just weeks after WrestleMania IV. In the feature match, WWE Champion Randy "Macho Man" Savage squares off with "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase.
Savage and DiBiase met weeks earlier at WrestleMania IV in the finals of the WWE Championship tournament. Savage was victorious thanks to a little help from Mega-Powers partner Hulk Hogan; would the Macho Man come out on top once again at MSG?
The first hour will also see World Tag Team Champions Demolition vs. Strike Force in another rematch from WrestleMania IV (where Demolition took the gold from Tito Santana & Rick Martel) and Bret Hart vs. Bad News Brown in a match born when Brown double-crossed the "Hitman" en route the Battle Royal that opened WrestleMania IV.
The second hour will turn back the clock to August 26, 2002. Just one night after SummerSlam, RAW was live at the Garden and featured Triple H vs. Undertaker to determine the No. 1 Contender to the WWE Championship.
Also in the second hour, Jeff Hardy takes on Chris Jericho and one of the Garden's most "extreme" moments in the Garden will be re-lived as Intercontinental Champion Rob Van Dam faces Hardcore Champion Tommy Dreamer in a Hardcore Match to unify the championships.

Showing stuff from recent times defeats the purpose of the classics. For me at least, I'm only interested in stuff from the 1980s.

I too prefer the classics, but I doubt many agree with us. I would even hazard to say that the newer cards will draw a higher audience, as its people todays fans are more apt to recognize, especially the younger viewers. Todays fans would clamor to see some classic stuff with the more modern Taker, HHH, RVD, and Jericho, over the British Bulldogs, Hercules, and Earthquake. You know that.

No doubt. But showing that kind of defeats the purpose of the classics. People already watch Raw. You're not going to get new members with this show. You may get some people to reconnect with wrestling and check out Raw today. I won't bother with shows from the 1990s and beyond. Edge v. Jeff Hardy can be found on Raw now. Why watch a classic?

Yes, people already watch Raw, but 2002 was not exactly a couple of days ago. I bet last nights 2002 episode had significantly more viewers than the 1989, although I certainly prefer the 1989 fare. But we are the minority in that, which is why WWE is smart enough to make sure to mix in the newer shows.
Also, you're kind of wrong on something recent not being a Classic. Ranger playoff games from last year are being shown as Garden classics. A classic is a classic.

Yeah, but they are stretching for classics. ARod has a 10 RBI game against Tampa, and it's a classic. The Yankees score 13 runs in the 8th against Tampa, and it's a classic. Doesn't make it so.
I think a big reason the MSG shows pre-Raw were classics was because back then, aside from the PPV (and there were only like 4 or 5 of them at the time), they had the jobber matches each week. Today, you see main event and PPV level matches every week.
Had they been doing that in the 1980s, seeing Hogan fight Piper wouldn't have been such a big deal. But back then, you could see title changes at house shows. The kind of matches you saw in 2002 were weekly.
I can see WHY the WWE would change that and eliminate the jobbers. Jobbers are boring. But with them, seeing top guys go at it was something special and WORTH going to house shows, which got better crowds.
Jeff Hardy v. Edge can happen next Monday, and the 10 Mondays after that, with 2 months of PPVs.

And you are STILL missing the point that the reason these are being called "classics" is, quite simply, cause they will draw big ratings. They are in this to get ratings, sell the product, and make money. Talking about what is and what is not a "classic" is semantics. And on top of that the 2002 card above IS a great card, and it was not so recent that fans will be too bored of it to watch it again.

What's so special about the 2002 card that you can't see every week on Raw?

Chris Jericho, for one. Undertaker vs HHH, they have not battled in years.
And even if you CAN see the stuff on Raw this week, this is stuff that happened in the PAST. And if its good, people want to revisit it. You are acting like they are showing a card from last month.
Get over it already. The more recent shows get higher ratings than the older shows....what does that tell you?

I'm sure they don't just want to show ANY match at MSG. Classic doesn't have to be really old. You have to mix it up with some new stuff to keep things different.
Besides, Jericho is retired and probably not coming back for a long time, if at all. So there is no problem with that.

If they showed the Rock/Austin PPV matches wouldn't they be classics? Or the Bret Hart/Shawn Michaels "ring the fucking bell" match? How about the Tables Ladders and Chairs matches? There were lots of classic matches during the "Attitude" era.
Don't get me wrong, I love the 80's stuff but I'd have no problem with them showing more recent classic matches...as long as they're classics...

No one should have a problem regardless....its a one hour show on MSG Network, for crying out loud. Its not a pay-per-view that is being falsely advertised or anything. If you like the look of the matches offered, watch. If not, move on with your life. And, going by recent ratings, the WWE draws more viewers the more recent the matches shown. Which makes all of Balls' whining even more intolerable.

We saw Chris Jericho every week for 5 years. And we last saw him a year ago. Big deal. I'm not impressed, and I'm not buying into your shenanigans.

Well, you are only a small chunk of the demographic, and they want to reach all of them, including younger fans who don't know as much about Ivan Putski and David Shutlz.
You know if they showed the match with Shatner flipping The Roadie you'd go nuts. LOL

This show can TEACH people about Putski and Schultz.
Shatner flipping the Roadie was the greatest moment in wrestling history. Of course that's a classic. That shot should be on every week. It would triple the ratings.

It is teaching people about Putski. It's also showing younger fans a good match they might not have seen in a long time.

Well, I do know the "original run" was 16 episodes...if they did not hit that, they were close. Next "season" they are showing over 30. I think they may still sneak in an episode here and there when the Rangers, and then the Knicks, are not playing a game.

From WWE.com: LOL @ "the vibrant" Lou Albano
not sure how much of an audience they will draw up against local playoff basball, but i will be running tape....
Don't miss MSG Classics October 3, 2006 Don't miss the final episode of MSG Classics for this season, to be aired on Wednesday night at 8/7 CT on the Madison Square Garden network. Hosted by WWE Hall of Famer "Mean" Gene Okerlund, MSG Classics re-lives some of the biggest WWE events from the World's Most Famous Arena. The first hour will feature matches from the Dec. 26, 1983 Garden show. In the main event, WWE Champion Bob Backlund defends the gold against the Iron Sheik. This match has one of the most infamous endings in WWE history, and suffice to say Christmas came late for the Iranian Superstar. The other two featured matches will showcase a half-dozen WWE Hall of Famers, as Chief Jay Strongbow goes one on one with Sgt. Slaughter and Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka teams with Arnold Skaaland to take on then-Intercontinental Champion Magnificent Muraco and Snuka's former manager, the vibrant Captain Lou Albano. The second hour will turn back the clock to Jan. 27, 1986. In the main event, Hulk Hogan squares off against Randy "Macho Man" Savage for the WWE Championship. Just two short years later, Hogan and Savage would be together and on top of WWE as the Mega-Powers, but on this night, they clashed in one of the first battles of their epic rivalry. Also in the second hour, the World Tag Team Championship is on the line as The Dream Team, Greg "The Hammer" Valentine & Brutus Beefcake, defend their gold against the British Bulldogs. These two teams would have a classic battle two months later at WrestleMania 2, but who would walk out of the Garden as champions? Plus, Hall of Famers collide as "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff takes on Big John Studd and the legendary Terry Funk takes on Scott McGhee. To see all the action, don't miss MSG Classics tonight at 8/7 CT on the MSG network.

WWE MSG Classics returns on MSG Network on May 16th.
Show means nothing to me now, with 24/7 on hand. I am one of the lucky ones. Instead of showing a select 3 matches from a given card, 24/7 shows the entire card. Not only the MSG shows ya'll will be stuck with, but shows from Boston, Philly, LA Sports Arena, Toronto....
It rocks! But those of you without 24/7 can enjoy this stuff.

That's cool. The timing is right too, since most TV shows will be ending.
