The original question was, "What are there more of on Earth...trees or seashells?"
But see, that was never the original question that was asked on any message boards. By then my intent was clear. And its not my fault you obviously misunderstood the original question. I guess it could have been more clear.
You disqualifing what the question has evolved to (which was my original intent in asking it) is akin to throwing out my question of "which soda do you like best" cause 5 years before I asked "which drink is your favorite."

More on the immense quantity of trees in todays paper...
AUSTIN, TX - The first detailed statewide tree counts shows Texas second only to Alaska. The Texas Forest Service said that initial results of the inventory indicate that the state has 60 million acres of forest land.

Another tidbit from the paper that shows the absolute wealth of trees, and how many more are planted in the ground day to day.
Seems the commerical paper industry has plans to plant forests of genetically altered eucalyptus trees in 7 Southern states. They will be altered to withstand "freezing temperatures."
Plan is to undergo field trials which will plant another 250,000 trees at 29 sites in the next few years. Add this to the already immense # of trees out there, or on the way out there, and it widens the already incredible advantage trees have to shells.

Yet the gulf spill likely caused the deaths of many an animal, and expect thousands of new shells to wash ashore.

Every bit helps pad the lead -
Labor Dept. Touts Saving 35 Trees Published : Wednesday, 20 Oct 2010, 10:10 AM EDT
BY LUKE FUNK
MYFOXNY.COM - The New York State Department of Labor issued a news release on Wednesday claiming it had saved 35 trees in 2010 by "greening" its unemployment insurance handbook.
In the release titled "Taxpayer Dollars Saved!" the state agency also claims it has saved $875,000 in tax dollars by reducing printing costs and phone bills.
In April 2010, the Department of Labor launched an on-line version of its page Unemployment Insurance Handbook in English and Spanish. In the past, a handbook was sent to each person who collects the benefit.
The release says, "In 2010, this new on-line feature has already saved more than 5.6 million pieces of paper from being printed. A typical paper mill consumes about 2.2 trees to produce 335,000 sheets of paper. Thus, this feature has already saved more than 35 trees."
"Millions of New Yorkers rely on our services every year, which is why we need to make certain that we are accountable for every public dollar being spent," said Commissioner Gardner in the release. "Technology has helped the Department of Labor improve services for millions of New Yorkers and save taxpayer dollars in the process."
The department of also claims it expects to save $250,000 in phone bills this year by using technology that gives people whose wait time exceeds two minutes the choice to allow the system to call them back when an agent line is free.

The actual number of trees on the planet is, of course, incalculable. Here are some related facts that might assist: Today there are approximately 100,000 known species of trees that exist throughout the world, according to World Resources Institute. While trees were once spread virtually across all of Earth's land masses, today they cover about 3.9 billion hectares or just over 9.6 billion acres (FAO Forest Resources Assessment 2000). The fact is, trees now cover only about 29.6 percent of Earth's total land area. From 1990 - 2000, about two percent of the world's forest cover - roughly 10 million hectares - was lost and not recovered, according the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). That rate continues today. ecology.com/features/quietevolutiontrees/quietevolutiontrees.htmlTrees are on the decline! SEASHELLS RULE!

So Tom stumbled on a funny idea to see if it would work. Ask celebrities on Twitter what they think the answer is.
Tom asked Logan Morrison (no relation to Jim) of the Florida Marlins the following question:
What are there more of, visible on Earths surface - trees, or seashells? Help settle an argument.
He said "trees seems like the obvious answer, so ill go with seashells"
This is worth asking if only to see if we get any response.
