Aside from watching "Camp Rock" last night as a nod to Emma, I closed my evening by pulling out the classic concert flick FREEBIRD, chronicling Lynyrd Skynyrd. I did so, boosted by the death of keyboardist Billy Powell, which leaves just one member of the band from those days still alive, drummer Art Powell. Some fantastic concert footage, Van Zant had such a presence on stage, even by just standing there and reacting to the other musicians. Some documentary footage, but basicaly that was well under 10% of the flick.

Finally saw The Simpsons Movie. Glad I didn't spend a cent to watch it. It was pretty funny, and they did a pretty good job of maintaining a "plot" (term used loosely) for an hour-and-a-half instead of a half-hour. But they did absolutely nothing to take advantage of being freed from the shackles of TV censoring. I'm not saying I expected them to drop the F-bomb every other word like South Park, Bigger, Better and Uncut, but they could have had some fun with the opportunity and they chose not to.

Come on, 9, that would have been entirely out of character. After a couple of decades the characters are going to become different people cause they are not on regular tube? Not only that, people know what to expect going in to a Simpsons flick. It would be sort of wayward to change things up and possibly offend some of your normal viewing audience.

Seriously dude, if Homer ever chooses another expletive over "Doh!" I'll be pissed.

I just meant spicing things up a little bit -- not having Lisa running around spewing F-bombs and participating in three-ways.

I so can not wait until the "Sherlock Holmes" movie, not due until November. Sherlock Holmes is my favorite character in any genre or any incarnation, ever. Robert Downey plays the famous slueth, and Jude Law is a dashing Watson, they say.

I saw the trailer for the Land of the Lost movie. Big budget, lame plot. I'll be surprised if the reviews are good.

This is funny. There is an older movie called "The Wrestler" from the early 70s, featuring a lot of AWA superstars at the time. It was recentlly remarketed, and can be grabbed "new" on Amazon for like 6 bucks. Anyway, talk about misrepresentation on the cover.... Not that they are pretending to be the CURRENT movie of the same name, but this one has a pic of Ed Asner on the cover (but looking totally different than he is in the movie, and as a completely different 'character') and a couple of amateur wrestlers on the cover - that is not what the movie is about, and none of them are in it.

Paul Blart "Mall Cop" Very very funny. Christy and I love the King of Queens except he's a met and Jets fan on the show. That show is basically about us without the father-in-law. When we saw this was coming out I told her we have to see it because Christy is a store manager in a mall.
The day after we saw it we went to Riverside Square Mall in Paramus and I just started busting out laughing. Christy goes what is funny I said look because that Mall has the Mall Cops on those scooters. I ended up going up to one of the guys and asked him if he saw the movie yet. he replied no

LOL @ mall cops on scooters.
I swear, when Paul Blart came out I was like, who the Hell is seeing this movie. I thought, dumbest thing ever. But I noticed the reviews were amazingly good, and it turns out no one i know who saw it disliked it.
Wont make me see it - maybe on DVD later on though.

That's exactly what my co-workers said and I replied it was one of the funniest movies I have seen in a very long time. I am very biased towards Kevin James because of the King of Queens but I would definitely recommend seeing this either in the theatres or on DVD. By the way my 1 co-worker ended up seeing it and he said VERY FUNNY

I guess I see your point a bit about Robinson's faults, but I found Randy the Ram Robinson to be sympathetic and not a bad guy, while Jake is just a pathetic loser.
I also liked Marisa Tomei's boobies!

Hmmm.....Balls, I am curious about your take on something.....why is steroid-monger Randy the Ram "sympathetic" and "not a bad guy" but you are taking baseball steroid users to task as the worlds biggest losers, and wastes of flesh?
In fact, come to think of it, your friend and mine Hulk Hogan is a noted steroid user.

A friend of mine knows Marissa Tomei and he said that I was just her type.
He set us up to meet at the park, and she got pissed when she found out I already had a girlfriend.

I think for one thing Tom, it's a MOVIE, not real life.
I realize some have trouble telling the difference, but others don't.

Balls, still waiting why "Randy the Ram" was a 'sympathetic nice guy' steroid user, when all these baseball players are pieces of shit. Is it not possible that they too are 'sympathetic nice guys?'

So we are in the middle of watching the first Batman movie, with Keaton and Nicholson, as a family. Taped it off cable, and watched half last night, will finish it tonight before RAW. My first time seeing this since I saw it in the theatre, over 20 years ago.
Look, I remembered in my memories that Nicholson was over the top and not necessarily that good. While I did not buy all this Ledger hype and thought he was completely oversold, I laughed at any ideas that Jack outdid him in the joker role. Well......now I have to say, I prefer Jacks joker.
I even joined a Facebook group to that effect. Ironically, same night we were watching the flick and I was thinking this, Heath was winning an Oscar for his performance. Yeah, I agree with those who believe he got it cause he died.

The answer to the last question Tom asked is no.
As for Nicholson, I am in the minority in thinking that he was not a good Joker. First, I actually think Cesar Romero's version, though nowhere near as manaical given the campiness of that show, was the best of all time.
Yet to me, the perfect Joker, was the Mark Hamill cartoon version, notably in the Batman Beyond Movie, Return of the Joker, where he could be more evil than what we had previously seen. I think if the character was written to its full potential in animation, Hamill could do a chilling performance.
That Batman Beyond movie alone was sick, and given that the last DC animated movie had a beheading in it, blood, gore, and actually had to be edited to lose a rated R rating, what they could do with the Joker today would be incredible.
Ledger was a different kind of Joker, and while I thought he WAS good, I didn't like that version of the character. I can see why he won, though I think the idea of retiring the character, as some fans have called for, is stupid. I hope to see the Joker portrayed on film again, and written like the Hamill version.
I hated Nicholson's version though. The origin was great, but the acting was overrated. He wasn't the Joker. He was Jack Nicholson in a clown outfit. But I didn't like any of those Batman movies.

Let's call a spade a spade here.....
Heath Ledger playing The Joker was hardly on par with work people like Hoffman, DeNiro, Pacino, Kingsley, Hanks, Redford, Eastwood, et al ... have done over the years.
These awards are shams.....they're much more about the Hollywood crowd perpetuating it's own self-importance than it is about the actual quality of performances.

No doubt. I said it on facebook--the Oscars are an exercise where smug and arrogant people can celebrate how smug and arrogant they are.
