It sure spread around the country, and forced Sesame Street to respond.

It was most certainly NOT a legit rumor, but it did make the rounds and was a rumor nonetheless, and CTW did have to issue a statement, which read;
"Ernie is alive and well, and we have no intention of anything happening to him or anyone else," Carolyn Miller, spokeswoman for Children's Television Workshop, New York.

Homer: Don't cry Lisa, tommorrow we wil go to the pound and get you another jazz man
Or thr Odd Couple Password episode:
Felix: Everyone knows Aristophones wrote a play called the Birds Oscar: Aristophones is RIDICULOUS! (The password is...ridiculous)...and on from there
Also, the best ending to a sitcom ever is the Newart ending

So hard for me to call M*A*S*H a sitcom. Yes, it was situational comedy, but there was so much drama in there that existed in almost every episode (not the token "Arnold gets beaten up by the Gooch" every so often) that I don't feel comfortable putting M*A*S*H in this category. It was on such a different level. Not to mention the fact that the funny parts were actually hilarious, as opposed to many sitcoms.

MASH had the great ability to merge real hilarity with some serious issues. It did, after all, premier while there were still troops in Viet Nam and the scars of that war were still very raw.
Until the show 'jumped the shark' as they say, it balanced the two extremes well. After Henry, Trapper, and Ferret Face left the show, and Alan Alda started producing and forcing his views, the show lost that balance and got kind of preachy.
The Henry scene worked so well because it came right after his funny farewell in his zoot suit.
But the first few seasons were true comic genius, more than just a sitcom.

Forgive me, this is the first time seeing this thread for me. Some random responses.
What stood out for me more than Carlton doing the Tom Jones dance was when Will and Carlton BOTH did the dance in the last episode. Classic if you were a fan of the show.
And I want to say that we did see the inside of the Hungry Heifer once, when they were interviewing Norm for that film they sent to Woody's father to convince him to let Woody stay in Boston.
But we never saw Vera's face.
Agreed on the Newhart ending. Phenomenal.
Another standout moment was whenever Michael and Joey had to deal with a blossoming Nicole on a very special episode of My Two Dads.
Not to mention anytime Six walked into the room on Blossom.

I don't think MASH ever jumped the shark, unless you consider AfterMash part of it.
The Colonel Blake death scene was partially so well done because none of the actors knew about it. The final page of the script was only given to Radar right before it was shot, and the actors were blindsided. The idea was to get a genuine reaction. In fact, someone was so shocked they dropped some surgical tool. You can here the sound of it hitting the ground.

That was probably the best scene ever written and executed, both in how it was done and what it meant. McLean Stevenson was tired of being in Alan Alda's shadow (and was probably bitter on top of that because he tried out for the role of Hawkeye), so he asked to be let out of his contract. The producers saw that as a big fuck you to the show (and worried what would happen with Col. Blake leaving) that they went full boar and gave him a bigger fuck you. And his career was never the same.
His biggest role after that was, of course, Larry Alder in Diff'rent Strokes. And we all know how that went. Goodbye, Larry.

It's interesting how some of the most memorable sitcom moments involved a serious turn like that. Archie saying goodbye to the Meathead was one of the finest acted scenes in All of the Family. And I'm sure we all still feel the sadness of Florida getting the telegram informing her that James was killed.
And by the way, in that calypso episode of the Odd Couple, Oscar was right. Felix was just being a cockblocker.

I don't mean to say MASH Jumped the Shark like Happy Days did, but after Radar and Burns and Henry and Trapper left and Klinger started to wear a uniform alot of the old edgy-ness disappeared. It seemed that later, they were reaching by trying to throw in tear jerkers all the time
Later on Larry Gelbart only wrote and produced the season openers and some special episodes, and Alan Alda took over a great deal of control and pushed the serious storylines too much. The early stuff with Hawk, Trap, Hery, Spearchucker and Ugly John is way more preferable to me.
I say this because MASH was and is one of my all-time favorites, if not the favorite. But the episode of Dreams when Hawk lost his limbs and the storyline of Winchester's stuttering sister had almost no laughs at all. Don't get me wrong, I do love MASH. I even have my own Capt Tuttle working in my office so I can pawn off the sales calls and telemarketers - everyone should get one.

Spearchucker and Ugly John....talk about early....they were only in the first season. That stuff was priceless. That really was more of a sitcom, that first season...funniest sitcom ever written.

They actually wrote Spearchuker off the show when they did research and realized there were no black surgeons in the Korean war.

"Believe it or not George is not home, please leave a message at the beeeep, I must be out or I'd pick up the phone, where could I beeeee, believe it or not I'm not hoooome...."

On Reno 911 last year, during a funeral scene, Deputy Junior was dozing in the church, and daydreaming of some hottie. So he gets called up to do a reading, but realizes he has "a boner." He is all flabbergasted, and not moving, and everyone is waiting. He whispers, loudly, to Lt Dangle behind him,
Deputy Junior - "I got a boner..."
Dangle - "A boner boner?"
Deputy Junior - "yeah....a boner boner."
(people in the aisle next to and in front look, appalled)
Dangle - "from the reading?"
He then gets up and does that boner-walk to the front of the church. Trust me, its funny.

The Cheers episode with Woody's shirt appearing on Spencer For Hire is on right now. Funny stuff!!!!
"Woody, there's an article in here that says your shirt is now dating Morgan Fairchild."
phone rings..."Cheers, this is Woody. Oh Hi Robert Urich. Oh I'm doing fine. Well, I thought your performance was great too. OK, see you around the studio."

The classic scene with Julian, Rickey, and Bubbles playing spaceship in the Spaceweed episode of Trailer Park Boys.
THAT is comedy.
