Bye bye Free-FM. As of 5PM today, the freewheeling talk is gone, and rock is back. Or rock, as 92.3 has defined it. O&A seem to be the anchor, but Radio Chick (and I just started to get back into that show again) is gone, as well as board favorites Ron and Fez.
Anchored by O&A in the mornings (from 6-9am), K-Rock will feature music from the '90s and today, with a core of U2, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, Linkin Park, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Papa Roach, Green Day, and Foo Fighters, according to a pitch sent by CBS sales which also touts "K-Rock has a history of dominance in reaching young men" and "delivers a young, active consumer - that will drive advertiser results." It also promises to super serve 25 to 34 year olds."

If it's like K-Rock right before the switch to Free-FM, they will play at least one Staind song per hour, as well. That station absolutely murdered that band.

Does whack packer Crazy Cabbie still have his own show on 92.3?
Speaking on New York radio stations, is WLIR still around? I remember that station from when I was a kid, and I was reminded of it the other day when I pulled out an old live Lou Reed disc recorded in front of a small audience at WLIR.

I wasn't aware Ron and Fez were on Free FM. I thought they were just on XM.
The station (at least for now) retains the call letters WFNY, as they gave WXRK to K-Rock in Cleveland when they went over to talk in NY.
Ok, FM talk didn't work in the 90s with NEW, and now didn't work in the 00s with FNY. Who will be the next bunch of idiots to set up FM talk and fail in NY?

A lot of the WLIR alum are still floating around. Malibu Sue is a fixture at Long Islands mix 94.3 WMJC. Gary Cee is program director at WPDH, a rock station out of Poughkeepsie, and an afternoon jock. Talk to Laura on here about WLIR, she could go on all day about it.
For the last few months Ron and Fez were doing a local 6-9PM show on 92.3.

And a damn good one at that. As long as they're still on XM all is right with the world. If that genius Ronnie B ever gets thrown off that's when I give up whatever life I lead and fight the good fight. And with 3 out of 4 XM host out right now, Ronnie is surviving one day at a time. It's a crazy, upside world that we live in.

I am going out to sea more often... i was gone 2 months at sea and when i returned KROCK and WCBS FM were back... i was so fuckin happy i didnt have to listen to mediocre talk shows at work and jackass FM's ridiculous mix
Other notable things that happend in 2 months were Cingular switching over to AT&T and The Bleachers losing roll call...

Ironically there are stubborn rumors that K-Rock is NOT set for the long haul, and the JACK format may actually be ressurected there on 92.3. Its been 2 months and no real set DJs are in place, and the station is playing exactly what they were playing when they were at their low ebb, pretty much. And while CBS zoomed to #2 in the target demos in the last rating book in only a couple of months time, K-Rock is now DEAD LAST in terms of ranked stations.
Another format change is being predicted.

Here's a funny one, for me anyway. Browsing the NY Radio Board, and people are complaining about this "new" incarnation of K-Rock. They are back to playing Linkin Park 100 times a day (yay Baloo!) and such. They have a rotating cast of clowny DJs. One of the newbies is entitled "Cat." I gave a click on the K-Rock site to see if this was a Cat who I had heard on some radio pods (Darwin and Cat, out of upstate NY, are pretty funny) - well, its not...but its someone else I know of! Back in the early 90s I would listen to a ton of Seton Halls' "Pirate Radio." All things metal. Commercial free college! There was this dopey girl on there with a grating voice. But she knew her metal. She was the "face" of the station. Always on overnights, so I heard a lot, with a buzz on. Well, I moved out of listener range, and that was that. Found her on MySpace a couple of years ago, off of the WSOU Pirate Radio page, so I knew she was alive. Working in PR for Sirius and stuff. Well now this chick is a weekend and latenight jock at K-rock. But she was never known as Cat...she was..... OPIE! Yes, dopey "Opie." But that wont fly anymore, with the other Opie holding down mornings. I do get a kick out of this clod and Opie being on the same station. Ah, a voice from the past nonetheless.

Thats when I was listening, mostly the early 90s. What a treasure trove, and commercial free to boot. Although most of the DJs were beyond bad. But hey, college radio. They stream online now, I gave it a shot a while back but drifted. They "cleaned up" the playlist - it took the school admins a few years, but when they realized what the college radio station was doing they were none too thrilled.
