Holy fuck. Awesome show. I had no idea there was this sort of thing going on. The old ice road. Kudos to the History Channel for putting on another winner. And the ratings for Sundays premiere broke records for the network. Guys, check this out. Its Deadliest Catch, except you got tractor trailers instead of boats and deadly ice instead of deadly waves. Another show I rolled dice on, and could not take my eyes off of. For more.... www.history.com/minisites/iceroadtruckers

I gotta say im going to have to disagree with you a little bit on this one. I watched the first episode and while a bit interesting, I couldn't imagine how many episodes they could possibly get out of it. I mean, yes there job is dangerous, but they are driving on an open road(Ice road), with no hitchhikers, hookers ...whatever ..I mean, where is the action ...At least in the deadliest catch there is an excitement lever due to the danger .....
Now on the other hand there was a tv show called Oil, Sweat and Rigs...where the Rig foreman "Teaspoon" had to drill 10,000 feet in a few days ....Oooff now that was a good show....

Uh, a truck crashing through the ice is action. Dozens of drivers have lost their lives on the road. Trucks getting stuck on the side of the road and a driver having to deal with 40 below temps is action, for what it is. Hey, this is a miniseries, not a recurring driver. The characters were cool, and real to boot. Good show. Stop causing trouble, Al.

dozens of drivers lose there lives on Sunrise Hwy or the LIE, ...the real question is how many actually fell through the Ice ...I think its like 2 or something .....If they lost a guy each year falling through the Ice ..It would be worth watching just to see who makes it and who doesn't ... on the worlds deadliest catch(one of my favorite show BTW) ..they lose an average of one guy a week during the season. Hows that for excitement.

can we refer to rookies in the softball challenge as "greenhorns" ?
oh and yeah...while this show looks somewhat interesting, I can see it being very gay after 3 or 4 episodes because it's copying Deadliest Catch.
A few co-workers of mine up in Canada are well versed in this sort of activity, trucking up to the NORTH POLE...and are amazed that something so boring was made into a TV series. It's not even that dangerous, just boring.

I just like the great outdoors. I am not watching to see a truck crack through the ice. If they wrap this up in 4 easy installments or something, it will have filled my palette.
Oh, and for what it is worth, the show is a smash hit - drew the highest ratings the History Channel ever had. So there is a large amount of people out there who are not quite set on this being "boring."

Are you kidding...why else would you want to see this?? I dont but that for a second, T. The allure of danger is why they made this show!!!

They couldn't do any worse, I guess people finally got tired of watching another special on Hitler or Nazi Germany. Jw

Oh, I didnt mean that I would be adverse to it, but I am not fully expecting it. Well, they HAVE shown footage of such, actually. But I am fully satisfied watching the scenes of the truck navigating through whiteout conditions, the idiot who got stuck on the side of the road cause of an air pressure problem, and the other bonehead who drove into a ditch.
Sorry, but the idea of 20 ton trucks riding along on under 11 inches of ice seems interesting to me. As did the tale that if a truck DOES go through (and they have) within 20-30 minutes the hole it went through will freeze over again, and if the body is not pulled, its entombed for the time being.

John, you of all people, disparinging the History Channel. A sad day, indeed.
Considering all the banal crap on TV these days, the History Channel should be proud of its offerings.

"and if the body is not pulled, its entombed for the time being." -- why wouldn't the film crew just help him?

There are not film crews in all the trucks. Maybe 1 in 50 trucks. And in the past, they were in NONE of the trucks. Dozens have lost their lives going through the ice over the years.
And even if they were, what stops them from going down too? They are also in the cab, dummy, not following in another car. Those trucks sink like stones, in ice cold water which shocks the system immediatly. You go in, you're done for.

Ahhh, I envisioned a separate film crew...like the one's who do the "Starving Children of Africa" shows who stand over a dying malnourished child's body, filming, and probably chewing on a Snickers bar

Dozens have lost their lives going through the ice over the years. Im not buying that. where did you get those statistics..... Also as far as the popularity of it. The reason the first show was so popular was because they had a commercial every 10 seconds for it. Lets see the ratings for the second episode. I will actually, partially, watch the second episode. Just to see if i was wrong, but i highly doubt it.

Nah, these guys are sitting in the cab with the drivers, althou gh there are some folks driving around shooting the trucks from the road.
As to the ratings, the stories are all over regarding the ratings. I had read it in the POST entertainment section, saw it on TVGUIDE.COM as well. There is enough of a buzz that two of the drivers are going to be guests on Leno tomorrow night, as well. I have better things to do than make up ratings numbers.

Oh, and speaking of ratings, what has been advertised more, Ice Road Truckers, or Rescue Me?
Ratings for last week....Ice Road Truckers got 3.4 million, while Rescue Me got 2.8 million. More numbers, John from Cincy got a piddling 1.2 and the much bandied about Entourage got 2.2. And none of this crap about "its show multiple times so people can watch anytime" cause the same holds true for Ice Road Truckers, which was replayed two times in a row AFTER that high-rated episode which was rated and a handful of times since.
All this is in todays USA TODAY, page 3D.

I wasn't questioning the ratings. I was questioning the amount of drivers that got killed by falling through the ice.

It was a big part of the debut episode. Talked about by the narrarator, other drivers, and there was footage shown of trucks being recovered out of the ice. I'm sure it was not just a heap of malarkey.
For Christs sake, they are driving over 300 miles on lakes covered with ice for up to 60 days in the year before the ice is too weak to hold the damn truck, of course a truck carrying tons of goods is going to crash through and sink to the bottom every once in a while. You can see the friggin' cracks snaking out as the trucks go over on the damn show.

Oh, and there is a bit of a reason it so resembles the Deadliest Catch, from the opening credits to the pacing...the guy who produced and narrrates this is the guy who put together the Deadliest Catch. Its all on him.

So I caught this show last night. I will admit that initially the concept was pretty fascinating...but I started to feel like this topic could be covered thoroughly in an hour or two documentary as opposed to a season-long series....not sure there was enough here to keep my enthusiastic about the show over severall months. I didn't tune in from day one, so I don't quite understand why these guy are driving across these ice roads...presumeably the location of these diamond mines are on solid ground. Assuming that these diamond mines are not on islands (maybe that's not a valid assumption, I don't know) why don't these truckers just take the land routes to the mines rather than driving across a frozen lake. Here's a novel idea...before the cold season, load up these mines with the supplies they need prior to the big freeze.
Of course, this doesn't take away from the fascination with the concept - driving big rigs over frozen ice that may give way at any time. And on last night's episode they talked about the dive crews assigned to rescue rigs/drivers from the depths. There were some pretty surreal photos of divers swimming around a submerged big rig.
